How to give Bionicpup64 a Windows 10 Theme?

#1 Post by oliverbob »

I was searching for ways to make puppy look like Windows 10 because I am a windows 10 user. Sadly, my Home edition of Windows 10 was damaged by the problematic update system of Windows. I'm using Lenovo Ideapad 110 and it shipped with that installation. When it showed signs of being unstable, I looked for ways to download Ubuntu, but I was surprised to see that it has become so huge to download, considering that the mobile data prepaid subscription in my country (the Philippines), is expensive are quite expensive, so I downloaded Bionicpup64 after watching a tutorial on Youtube.

Then I made a bootable USB for Puppy, I kept using it with its live and save feature. One time when I tried to restart the PC to get back on Windows 10, Windows took forever to load itself even when I did not yet install Puppy. I could not go back yet to my manufacturer or the distributor to have Windows 10 fixed especially because it had a Windows 10 license, but, also because my country legalized a lock down against COVID-19 and all computer establishments are legally closed since it is illegal for them to do business until our president gives the order.

Seeing I had no other choice but to install Puppy in one of the drives, that was what I did. I also found out that Windows had 4 or 5 drives where it installed itself, So I installed puppy on the unpartitioned drive. Since Lenovo shipped with 1TB.

Anyway, now that I'm fully on Bionicpup64 puppy, I would like to have the looks and feel of Windows 10. Is there any way to achieve this? Is there any tutorial that I can follow to accomplish this? I'm just curious to know because seeing that this distro came from Ubuntu 18, then, I think it is possible to achieve something like this: https://www.debugpoint.com/2018/08/tran ... gtk-theme/

I don't mind going to technical for as long as there is a path worth following.

By the way, I am a new user to this forum and on a side-note, I noticed that the forum have not yet implemented SSL. Forums frequently use forms for communication and if these exchanges are not encrypted from the client side to the server and vise-versa, needless to say poses threats to users and the server as well. I recently came across this repo, and it got me worried about sites not implementing SSL these days: https://github.com/swisskyrepo/PayloadsAllTheThings.

Back on topic, I hope anyone out rhere would really be kind enough to provide guidance for my inquiry.

Thank you very much,

Oliver

Hello Oliver!

Welcome! There were some older examples of Windows like themes. You will need to search this forum for those threads. Try using this page to search the murga forum -> https://rockedge.org/psearch/

There is work being done to eventually upgrade the forum software to be able to offer both http and https.

Hi Oliver,

hopefully someone more knowledgeable of BionicPup than me will chime in and offer better guidance, but I think I can get you started.

The article you linked includes the first steps you need to take, no matter what. Follow that article to download the theme and the icons pack, rename the folders and place them in the paths that the article lists. Then, unfortunately, the section named "Apply" doesn't apply to your case. Instead you will need to learn how to apply a GTK icon theme (this is easy with the help of google, you'll see that it boils down to writing the icon theme name in a GTK configuration path in your home folder). With the new icons established you should be able to see Windows-10-like icons in the file manager's item pane. That's already a useful result. However, new icons won't change the way the desktop and the windows in it look. To change those you will need to apply the new theme to your desktop environment (DE). The DE comprises things like the window manager, the task bar, and a few other things. According to the article you linked, the theme supports the following DE components:
Gnome
Cinnamon
Unity
Openbox
Mate
Xfce

As far as I know, the default BionicPup doesn't include any of them, so before you can proceed you need to modify your puppy to use one of those components (possibly guides for the Openbox window manager or the Xfce DE will be easier to find in this forum). Once you have one of the supported DE installed in your puppy you should be able to find instructions on how to Apply (remember when I wrote ' "Apply" doesn't apply to your case" ?) the new theme to your DE to get your desktop look more like Windows 10.

How to Give Bionicpup64 a Windows 10 Theme:

(1) Install your Bionicpup64 to a USB-Key.
(2) Install a USB-port version 1 to your computer. Only use that port for your Bionicpup64 on the Key.
(3) Install RAM-Demanding Applications. Run them all simultaneously.

In a more serious vein:

Not a Windows 10 Graphical User Interface. But, if you want something like Windows 7, try dpupbuster64-XFCE from here, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 21#1032621. It will either already have, or enable you to install, Whisker Menu. Googled Images, https://www.google.com/search?q=whisker ... vvYCz1ObdM

xfce will also let you easily set-up several panels with launchers.

According to haywirepc, the Xfce window manager can be installed into Bionicpup64. But, see my post about smoothing some rough edges. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 39#1037839
