The Bionicpup updates just adds the Nvidia 440 driver to those available in Quickpet->Drivers.
You still have to select it in Quickpet to install it.
Use Quickpet->Drivers->Nvidia 440 to install the driver package.
This should do everything needed to get it correctly installed.
When it reboots make sure it saves.
Also if it boots to the Xorgwizard to choose driver to use.
Type in nvidia in driver selection.
Bionicpup only boots to console (Solved)
thanks bigpup,
this is exactly what I did (eventually after a lot of faffing)
the only confusion was that I had to change the driver in xorgwizard in the first place to get X to work at all, so that I could all that you describe
afterwards I needed to run xorgwizard again and manually change/specify driver to be used

The driver package installs a Nvidia control program.
Only use it after you get Nvidia driver actively used.
Tweak away on how the Nvidia hardware works.
Nvidia X Server Settings control program.
It controls the settings for Nvidia graphics hardware when using the Nvidia driver.
This is very good at making setting adjustments.
Use it for making any setting changes.
"Warning"
On the X Server Display Configuration Window is an option:
Save to X Configuration File
DO NOT USE THIS OPTION
It will make an xorg.conf file that does not work in Puppy and replaces the working Puppy xorg.conf.
The Nvidia program has it's own config file that is used by the driver.
