installing Canon i-Sensys MF8540cdn

#1 Post by ArthurR »

Hi,

First time using Linux though I do go back a wee bit in computer history (started with DOS 3.3) but I've hit a blank wall trying to install my networked Canon printer into tahrpup 6.0.5.

I've run the "Add printer and Classes" in CUPS and it detects my printer fine but it does not have anything like my model of printer in the list of Canon printers.

So onto Canons web site. I've downloaded "Canon UFR II/UFRII LT Printer Driver for Linux Version 3.70 " extracted it and run "install.sh". Unfortunately this just generates lots of errors mainly along the lines of " Line xxx: dnf: command not found" and reports that "Some system libraries could not be found" and finally ends with "Could not install".

If any more info is needed you will probably have to guide me on how to obtain it.

Any help would be appreciated.

It might help if we can see the install.sh file to see what it is trying to do.

Making a big leap, it might be trying to compile the print driver. If so, loading the devx file might do it or at least get you closer.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pu ... 20-6.0-CE/

Download the devx file for your verson and use SFS load to load it.

How to install your printer in Puppy
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=59015
This tells you everything and has the drivers for most printers.
In the first post find the info for Canon printers and follow it closely.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

That looks like a generic driver for linux. There may be a specific linux driver for your model. I also have Canon i-Sensys but I think a much older model than you have. There is not a linux driver for my model (so I print using windows XP) but I have seen model specific linux drivers for newer models of the i-sensys range.

No it's not. It is a combo driver that appears to support Arthur's model.

Bigpup has supplied the most relevant information.

????????????????

What on earth is the point in giving out random suggestions like that?

The user must please report back with the exact steps he had taken to get that driver and printer/scanner going. I may want to try it myself if it works correctly. Cheers

Or you could test it now by following the instructions given by bigpup.

If I remember correctly, it's a 100mb data download. I'll wait to see if someone gets it going before I take the plunge.

I've managed to capture the output from install.sh

Maybe someone more familiar with Linux can see why it can't find the commands at the various lines.

Welcome to the forum!

The first line of the output from your install.sh says it all
This installer is recommended for the following distributions that are currently supported as of the release of this installer:
- Fedora/Ubuntu/CentOS 7.3 or later/Debian 8.6 or later
My over-simplified understanding of that one line is that puppy linux is not listed in the supported operating systems and you will have problems
to include missing libs and commands not available in puppy without additional work if you insist on using that script.

I suggest go to the link provided by bigpup, there are links to installing different printers in that post that include detailed instructions.
Those instructions were written by rcrsn51 and you have his attention so take advantage of that. Nobody can give you help if you won't accept it

I have looked through all 15 pages of the post by bigpup and I have downloaded "candi-1.4.pet" but when it comes to the bit about downloading drivers I cannot find drivers for the i-sensys following the link to Canon that it provides.

The only driver package I can find for my printer is the one I downloaded.

I thought that the version of tahrpup that I an running was based on an Ubuntu distribution.

For Canon laser printers that use the CAPT or UFRII drivers, read here.
Some Canon printers use a driver named UFRII. . This one is easier to install. Download and extract the package

Code: Select all

linux-UFRII-drv-vxxx-uken
Locate the two files cndrvcups-common_xxx.deb and cndrvcups-ufr2-uk_xxx.deb. In most Puppies, you can install these by clicking on them.

Make sure that you pick the correct 32/64bit versions for your Puppy.

Run the CUPS web interface. USB printers should install with the usual procedure. Networked printers will require a URI something like the following, which may be auto-detected by CUPS.

Code: Select all

lpd://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/CANON-iRC5180

@rcrsn51, thanks, I missed that bit. I think I started to glaze over by page 9!

I'll give that ago later.

Yes, that worked. I can print in colour too. :D

What did running those two actually do?

@Arthur: Excellent. How are you connected to the printer? By USB? If over the network, what is the URI (network address) used by CUPS?

Regarding scanning: your unit may work with the SANE pixma driver that is included in your Puppy. But it will depend on the version. And scanning may only work over USB.

Run: scanimage -L
