I have found a puppy that has bluetooth and it works with my bluetooth mouse. Thanks to CsipeszPup!

The bluetooth.sfs that csipesz provided also worked with his lupu xp. Nice!

But I tried bluetooth.sfs with precise puppy xfce based and it doesn't work unfortunately. The taskbar disappears in xfce when bluetooth.sfs is loaded.

Anyway, it is so good to know that I don't have to turn to full ubuntu linux to get a linux that has bluetooth function.

I generally use 3HD or Fatdog. However I want to find a Puppy that loads and goes quick on this old netbook but is up to date enough to run Skype. MS$ has cut off users of older versions of Skype.

Spec are: HPMini 110-3500; Intel Atom N550 @ 1.5GHz; 1GB ram.

The supplied Windows 7 Starter is especially horrible on this machine!

Suggestions please?

My personal favorites are Carolina and X-Slacko.

Carolina has Skype 4.3, which I think is the latest version on Linux.

Many Carolina packages work on X-Slacko, but for Skype i don't know as I have not tried.

Thanks yerc1. Carolina ISO is 3/400 MB, which gets expanded on loading. It might be a tight fit in a 1GB Ram machine? Running it from HDD is likely to be un-Puppy slow. I will have a look at x_slacko.

No worries Snail.

Carolina (the main edition) is indeed bulkier than most puppies, and that's due to LibreOffice being included. The size difference aside, it is as quick as any other puppy.
If you are not into LibreOffice, there's a Carolina light edition (Carolite) with just the basic building block which you can then turn into your own Carolina by adding apps from their regularly updated repo.

Both run nicely on my Acer Aspire One 532h netbook with just 1 Gb ram.
And I'm talking about frugal install and usb install.

If however, you decide on X-Slacko based on size, I'm sure you will be one happy user.
It's the third frugal and usb install I have.

I'm looking for a puplet that has the following:
-new chrome and flash
-SNS or another *very* simple wireless wizard
-opengl drivers that would work with a ~3-4 year old Quaddro graphics card, DVI out.
-preferably gnumeric
-cups, with brlaser or the Brother drivers for the DCP7065DN preinstalled
-icewm/jwm/other Start-menu based wm with files on the desktop
Yes, this is standard, but there are a few exceptions.
-ath9k_htc module for AR9271 usb wireless (or zd1211rw for said chip)
I'd like something that fits on a cd, the smaller the better. 64-bit or pae optional.

For background, my family's PC runs Windows 7 Professional; my brother built it himself for a CAD class. Hardware is as follows:
CPU- K8-family 3-core with the fourth core unlocked, overclocked to 4+ Ghz.
GPU- Quaddro (I forget if it was 1000 or 200)
RAM- 8 GB
Disk- Revo SSD (50GB or 100GB) and WD HDD (512GB)
Optical- 1 CD/DVD burner.
Either a disk took a dump or something happened to the boot record, so it's not booting.
I'm looking for a live cd I can give to my mother to work on taxes. Technically a DVD would work, except that I'll need to boot a live cd to ram, download the iso to ram, and burn it to disk. My mom does not like computers or learn them quickly (she used a PC in the 1980s for accounting, and thinks of things in terms of the dangers of that era), but has used Windows some. Her usual browser is Chrome.

I was using Precise 5.7.1, but felt the desire to upgrade. So I went to Tahr 6, but could never resolve my sound card issue. Caroline (beautiful, btw) wouldn't let me online (Slacko gives me fits too), Xslack brought me back to the sound card issue.

Simplicity? I just flat-out hated Simplicity.

So I delta'd to Precise 5.72, and I suppose I could carry on in that vein for a while...

[edit] I can't get the network setup to work in regular Slackware either, so it's no surprise that it won't work in derivatives. My computer is such a touchy old POS that no one should be embarrassed or feel the need to offer advice.

I have one dialed in on AntiX testing 14 patch 5.
Most touchscreen posts I have read here are for 64 bit gear and isos.
I recieved my 2nd one via fedex today and am leaving it alone till I decide
on what to roll with on it.

So being lazy and asking here instead.

Though I doubt any forum member besides me has one.

Well. Cool. I've changed kernels to get the SD card slot reader working. Touchscreen still works.

This is not a biggie per se. I can fly on a Ubuntu or Debian or Arch minimal install and go from there. I am not hip on building up from a minimal Puppy install though.

I am usually install and tweak and go on Puppy with just minor tweaks at that.

I have a feeling though that touchscreen>32 bit> and Puppy Linux might not be in the cards for me. Carolina Vangaurd looks promising. But ram usage on these I try and keep
at a minimum. So Fluxbox or JWM would be my druthers. E17 would be a option also and I am comfy in Icewm also.

No need to. I can download and run off SD card if I wish with a save while doing the unetbootin shuffle. Install grub4dos and blow away unnetbootin syslinux boot loader
on mbr of the SD card and I am off to the races.

Just bored while this cold front here blows through. So the shop is slow today.

I got a feeling I'll need a new kernel although the touch screen on this rig is not the latest or greatest. Being a 2009 machine and all.

I will see what I will see I guess. If Vangaurd works OK for me. I'll be sure and post about it.

There are so many now! I'm sure they're all great, but for a newbie it's hard to know which Puppy I should try first. It would be awesome if someone wrote a little blog post or sticky post on Which Puppy to Adopt.

I have a really old Dell Dimension with 512 RAM and some kinda Celeron processor I don't know how fast. It's older than me, a hand-me-down from my parents when they got their new computer. It used to run Windows XP but I have LXLE on it now which is pretty fast. I even got my parents to dual-boot it because they love LXLE too!

But I tried Puppy for the first time today and it's like, Whoa, warp speed! Really cool. I chose Tahr 6.0.2 CE because it's based on Ubuntu so I thought it would be somewhat familiar. I wanted something I can show at the computer club at school that would be portable and fast. But there are so many other choices that I bet are just as awesome.

Maybe it could be categorized by:

hardware requirements / compatibility

what they are built from Slackware, Ubuntu, Debian, whatever

default applications (Libreoffice or Abiword, etc., or Firefox or Seamonkey or whatever)

Availability and size of repositories

whatever other categories

Just a little something to help a newbie choose? Some kind of guide would be super helpful for people adopting their first Puppy! Thanks

I have mirrored ALL the puppies I could find, most major distributions I have also mirrored the repository where I could

the repositories are not as complete as I would like but there is a lot there

go here: http://archive.org/details/puppylinux and you will find over 3500 pups and other goodies too

on the right of the page you will see a search box, type in slackware, debian etc and you will get some options, this is just a keyword search and required me to add that to the puppy page, I'm sure I have missed some though

I used to run slacko 5.3.3 on everything I had as it worked on everything I put it on and really well, my current go to is tahr (64), they will all have a slightly different personality so play with a few

if you have the recommended 'frugal' install you can dual boot in seconds

create a suitable folder, click on the downloaded ISO to expand it, copy all the files into the new folder, click the ISO file again to unmount it, run grub4dos and you're done

add more puppies and play!!

I have used puppy exclusively for around 8yrs now and probably boot windows twice a year and do not miss it, there are much prettier linux installs but nothing so simple and FAST as puppy

Welcome to that very quirky little number. Mike Walsh and myself have the Dell 1100 - "the Dell from Hell!" It has some very anachronistic (lack of) capabilities!

If only all computers were the same - but, they are not. Even the model dropped directly off the assembly line may contain a different chipset from the previous batch. This continues with sub-assemblies; video, sound, Internet, etc ; and you are working with a very different beast from the previous incarnation of only a few weeks ago. Add any extras - such as specialist video cards, more sound systems - anything, then it becomes very hard to quantify what will work for one computer system, then say it will work for another.
