Dpup 484beta Testing
Very similar to what did happen to me.gerry wrote:Running dpup-B4 on Acer Aspire One, frugal install on hard drive. Several times Firefox has crashed, needing a reboot to get going again. But this time dpup would not reboot.
I was able to boot with a Slitaz live usb, delete the pupsave file, and bring the backup into use. Then dpup rebooted.
EDIT: what I meant above was that dpup crashed to a black screen when I was using Firefox. Previously, a reboot got it going again, but this time when I rebooted X would not start, whatever I did (running the x wizards).

this part
I only got my puppies booting using an alternative way.needing a reboot to get going again. But this time dpup would not reboot.
like this
title puppy NOP
find --set-root /nop/vmlinuz
kernel /nop/vmlinuz psubdir=nop
initrd /nop/initrd.gz
boot
when do this then it doesn't boot
title Puppy Linux 4.3.1 nop
kernel (hd0,0) /nop/vmlinuz PMEDIA=satahd PDEV1=sda1 psubdir=nop
initrd (hd0,0) /nop/initrd.gz
boot
I get two kinds of error messages.
Error 1 Filename must be either an absolute pathname or blocklist
What do they mean by blocklist? by absolute pathname I guess they mean /mnt/home/vmlinuz or similar?
But why did it work the first or second or third time and not after the crash and why does the alternative way to boot work?
How does one repair it. You get it going by deleting the save file.
Heheh I don't want to do that. Have put so much energy into them now.
Ok I do it for dpup maybe that is ok. But not for stardust or NOP.
Why I fail with upup I don't know. Maybe it really need the extra files to get it going.

This sounds identical to a problem I have been repeatedly having, and I'm glad to see someone else has it too . Gerry, can you confirm the following:gerry wrote:@Nooby- it doesn't happen often- it worked perfectly for a week before the latest crash. I opened the Metcheck uk weather forecast page, which I do every day, but this time it crashed.

1) Is your graphics chipset an Intel one - easiest way to check this is to do "cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver" and see what driver is being used.
2) The next time you get the crash, can you try the following steps to see if it remedies it (this assumes some familiarity, if you need more detail let me know; if you need less please don't mind me ):
a. Wait about ten seconds after screen blanks
b. Type Ctrl-Alt-F1. You should get a virtual terminal. If you don't, it's a different bug.
c. If you do get a virtual terminal, please immediately first make a copy of the file /tmp/xerrs.log. This file contains the error logs. It should have some mysterious "Ring" error in it, if it's the same bug.
c. Use any command line editor, vi if you prefer, I use "e3pi" - to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Scroll down to the "Driver" line. Change it from "intel" to "vesa".
d. Type "xwin". X should restart. If you don't do above, X will not restart, you'll just keep getting a blank screen.
If this is the case, then it's not about firefox, it's a bug in the intel video driver that I've been trying to hunt down for about three months (whenever I get the time, so it's possible I've missed something obvious). It only seems to occur in dpup, not in normal Puppy, and it happens to me on a regular basis. From what little I have been able to find, it relates to some problem that should have been fixed in later versions of X.org, but that was as of 2007 or so. So not sure what is going on. If you do above, please post your xerrs.log file from the error - possibly that will help gposil or someone else more capable than me to figure out what's going on (all it would help me to do is verify that you are experiencing the same error as me).
Incidentally, can you also check if you get the crash when using Flash? I have a feeling that it happens mostly when using Flash.

thanks Tux,
me Swedish, I guess all Swedes are embarrassed to have such a verbosely wordy guy that even is confused and see himself as a newbie despite years of experience but obviously forget what he learns in a blink of the eye.
not easy to have such Dino onboard. An old fossil.
But if 4-stroke wants to help me with English that is a friendly thought to not say no to. So I will try my best then.
do I have Dpup484 now? Hm let me see. dpup-484beta4-2.6.30.5.iso and my menu.lst looks like this Neogrub version of grub legacy or grub4DOS
Now I will test the mini version of Teenpup.

are there other versions of Dpup to test. I remember vaguely that there are others.title dpup-484beta4-2.6.30.5.iso

@Nooby- dpup484beta4 is the latest dpup.
@Shankar- I've got Flashblock set to block.
@anyone- my latest problem with dpup is that in Firefox, when I use the scrollbar to scroll, the screen image breaks up, with lines repeated several times, overlapping so that only the top one is completely visible. Refresh clears it, and using up/down buttons to scroll does not cause it. If I use the mouse on the arrows at the top/bottom of the scroll bar, again no problem- it's only when I use the mouse to drag the scroll bar up and down.
EDIT: Just closed Firefox and went to Abiword- same problem.
EDIT: Removed some junk.

Dup is one of the Puppies me want to use.
But unfortunately most likely due to Debian proprietary policy it seems to not have mplayer codecs in the package manager.
Almost all the other puppies me have tested does have the codecs for install.
So how do I get the same mplayer features in Dpup 484?
Don't tell me to use the other 6 or 7 puppies me have installed.
They have either Seamonkey or Opera or Chrome.
I want FireFox 3.6 or at least 3.5.7 going as browser.
any kind suggestion appreciated.

SSL in dpup 484 beta
Last year, in this holiday complex, I could sent my mail using the gmail smtp server, which needs authentication and ssl.
I wasn't in dpup then, but puppy 4.20 I think.
I try to do the same in dpup484beta4 and get an issue about SSL.
Isn't there support for SSL in beta4?
I looked in the PPM but didn't find something as SSL support.
If yes, there is another issue.

Oh, that is most likely my wild guess. So it works if I take away thatBéèm wrote:Why do you put a space after (hd0,0)nooby wrote:title Puppy Linux 4.3.1 nop

space. What about the mplayer codecs in this version then?
Edit.
Sorry, I lack fantasy.
My simple logic is this.
I am a puppy user and in almost all puppy I can go to the manager and there it is. Mplayer codecs and plugin for browser.
But in Dpup and Upup? them using Debian resources and Ubuntu resourses then there is no such to make use of.
So as a newbie I naively thought that somebody had came up with a better solution than to use Opera which have these codecs built in it seems.
To find the Seamonkey add ons was not what I managed to do. But I take a look again. Have any hint where to find them? On their home site or in the browser somewhere?

I usually download two kind of Mplayer addons using the package manager.
full set codecs and plugin for browsers.
these allow me to look at local TV stations News and other clips they have.
And it also allow me to see some .avi files that not the other players can show. VLC failed and xcine failed but Mplayer with codecs could show it.

Re: SSL in dpup 484 beta
Forgot to say it's an application in wine.Béèm wrote:Last year, in this holiday complex, I could sent my mail using the gmail smtp server, which needs authentication and ssl.

I looked at ssl support for wine and installed the .dll's in the system32 directory, but that didn't cure the problem.
As last year the 4.20 did work, I looked for ssl libraries and copied them in the dpup environment.
Didn't work either.
In 4.20 the email's go out, but as wine isn't at level and as I try dpupb4 I prefer a solution for dpupb4.
