My hero. :)

I may have got it sorted, following your advice.
Try this.

Login to mydrive as reprap@koolie
p/w: puppylinux

It worked for me.

Post feedback if successful, or otherwise.

Awesome! I'll download it and stick it online so others can get it.

Oh wait -- it looks like you might want to control distribution, so let me know if you *don't* want me to stick this online somewhere. (I should have read more carefully!);

No, I just wanted to get that d/l working for everybody.

It is obviously working, so I will edit earlier post.

Hosting elsewhere as well could be a good idea as Mydrive may not like open access to it and block it.

I downloaded and booted from CD and the desktop is all black without icons. Is that as intended or do I have a problem?

Not meant to be.
Worked fine on 2 machines I tried.
It should look like the last screenie I posted.

It may be picking up an .sfs or .3fs from your HDD and screwing things up.
Boot with puppy pfix=ram.

Have you tried setting up Xorg from a prompt?

Check the MD5 of your ISO.

Ok, download completed correctly.

Ran disc, and just before xorgwizard, I get the following:

"Slacko puppy linux
Linux 2.6.37.6 [i6686 arch]

puppypc26696 login: root (automatic login)
ls: cannot access /usr/java/jre*: no such file or directory
#"

Then xorgwizard starts correctly, as does xwin.

(same on 2 laptops)

On my toshiba, everything starts correctly.

@greengeek - try 16bit colour:
On my compaq evo 610, I tried to start in 24bit colour, and got the taskbar, and mouse pointer, but black screen without icons.
changed to 16bit colour, and all was good.

@ Kooliepup: Most things seem to be working as I expect, but I've not had much time to check yet.
Pronterface seems to be giving weird results - not sure if this is to do with the JRE error at the beginning.
Sometimes, when clicking the desktop icon, pronterface does not start at all, and quickly flashes on the screen and vanishes again.
when it does start, the screen is not as I would expect it to be - there is no control panel for setting the position of the printhead.

The other thing that I have noticed so far is on the arduino program, and I totally forgot that we need the sanguino extensions installing if it will work with reprap boards. should be easy to fix.
[Edit - Done that]

http://code.google.com/p/sanguino/downloads/list

go for the latest, and unzip to arduino-00XX/hardware/

so that the directory looks like arduino-00XX/hardware/Sanguino

(restart arduino)

worked ok.

Although, having said that, my 1st shutdown didn't work out too well, so I will have to do it again..

I've not had a chance to plug it in to my reprap yet... that will probably be tomorrow pm :(

a side note, don't seem to be able to load flash through the package installer....all links appear to be down...

Glad to hear that it is ok.

Funny how you (I) don't notice irrelevant error messages when you see them all the time.
That msg is normal when using the jre*.sfs, instead of installing jre.
Two options.. grab jre-1.6u24-i586.sfs, or install a jre .pet.
Both are available on the forum.
The missing Java causing Pronterface oddities didn't show up for me on the second machine because I have the jre .sfs on that machine too. :?

I'll get the Sanguino extensions, thanks.
I saw reference to Sanguino in ReplicatorG.

The package manager in Slacko doesn't always work properly.
It seems that some of the packages have been renamed on the repos.
I found one instance of that today.

You can find a flash .pet on the forum, but you may need one specifically for Slacko.
I don't remember which one I use.

BTW, the USB drivers are in /root/DRIVERS.
I didn't install them 'cos I can't test them.

Keep sending feedback.

re package manager not working: ahh.. makes sense now.

Lost those lovely desktop icons by twiddling with "desksetup templates for Desk icons" :(

any easy way to get them back?

(I could delete my pupsave file I guess, and start again)

I'll try the JRE thing...

Gotta go out again now though... life... it does get in the way from time to time!

Thanks. Have tried both 16 and 24 now, but same result. The system seems to be working fine (posting from it now..) but just not the right display. Might be some issue with my nVidia driver. I think I will try it on a few other machines and see what happens.

I wonder if it is something to do with the fact I only have 512M ram on this Toshiba TE2100 lappy?

Sorry, I didn't have time to chase these last time.

http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/di ... 7.0-20.pet
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/di ... yer-11.pet

@greengeek,
You may need to install NVIDIA drivers.
There are a heap of them here..
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/di ... es-slacko/
I don't know which one would suit your machine.

Loading 566MB into a 512MB machine is not going to make for a stunning performance.
I would have liked to have been able to keep it to 300MB so that an old clunker could be used, but that was not to be.

A bit off topic, but it would be wonderful if puppy could run emc2, with its ability to run on ancient hardware, it would make for an ideal platform for a workshop cnc control, maybe it can and I have not come across it, if so apologies.

Maybe not really off-topic, but rather a progression.

LinuxCNC is waiting in the wings for me to catch up with myself.
I have an Arduino Uno sitting in the bottom drawer for some months, joined a few weeks ago by a RaspberryPi, and I will probably have a RepRap before I get to look at either of those.
I have put LinuxMCE on hold indefinitely.
http://puppylinux.info/topic/unusual-us ... #post-4421

Who knows, I may decide to go off on another tangent with CNC soon.

I am spread thinner than margarine ATM.

So many temptations. So little time.
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Yes, the last thing I would do is highjack this thread, I to tend to have to many things on the go, just to many fascinating things to play with.

must just say that since lucaster pointed out puppy on the reprap forum I have only used this ancient laptop (7 years old) with puppy installed and not booted my new one (only 4 years old) with ubuntu, I just love puppy, wish I had the ability to understand puppy linux as you do.
