Are you using a frugal (not hard disk) install? My instructions to put the SFS in /mnt/home are for a frugal install.

SFS files are intended for frugal installs. If you have a full install the process is more complicated and you cannot use the Boot Manager to add or remove SFS files. I only use frugal installs so I have no experience of a full install. However, I believe you have to open/extract the SFS and manually copy the files to the appropriate directories. You will need to keep a record of what you have done in case you subsequently want to remove them.

Hi folks,

I've been looking for a half hour or so but can't find a .pet installer for this Skype version - I have some webcam issues that I want to see if a newer version will fix.

I know this thread is for the .sfs file for frugal installs, but I am running a full install of Lucid 5.2.8 on my machine and was looking for the .pet? Could anybody kindly direct me in it's general direction if such a thing exists?

The reason noone has a pet up for it is because of the size of the file itself, most people find it silly to "permanently" install such a large file on puppy and take up a chunk of save space. I do have a pet of it however am unable to upload at my current location. I'm sure someone will be nice enough here though to hook you up with a pet for it.

How big is the .pet version of skype?

Well, considering I am using Puppy as the primary OS on that machine due to its speed (the machine is older hardware - 1.5ghz AMD AthlonXP 1800+, 64mb NVidia Quadro 2 Pro video card, 10gb HDD)) and because the machine only has 768mbs of RAM (which, yes, it more than Puppy really needs, but is still not THAT much), I have a full install of Puppy, not a Frugal install.

I don't really consider 30mbs that big in my case (something like 70mbs, or 90mbs would be a different story though!), so "permanently" installing it on that machine is fine with me as I use Skype quite often, that's why I was curious if there was a .pet version....plus, Puppy has always come with a whole bunch of apps that I don't ever use, so I've already freed up some space by removing a number of the preinstalled apps

Would a Frugal install really run that much better than a full install?

30MB is not a big deal for me either, would love if someone posted .pet version of skype.

how to make a pet of the skype sfs.....

1. create a folder somewhere called skype
2. left click on the skype.sfs to mount it. (you'll see the folders inside the .sfs)
3. copy the folders you see to the new skype folder you created (this can be done by dragging and dropping and choosing the copy option)
4. in the directory where your skype folder is, right click and choose >>>>window>>> terminal here.
5. in the terminal type alternatively you could use sfs load on the fly here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=64354 it creates a pseudo pet in full installs. be sure to read the section on using it with full installs.....

Thanks to 666philb's instructions, I also created and used a .pet of this Skype install...unfortunately it still didn't fix my webcam issue (which is that my webcam works fine in GUVCViewer but won't load in calls in Skype at all, and when testing it in the Skype options just shows as a blank, black window...anybody's help or ideas as to why would be appreciated!), but at least it is an updated version

hi darkstrike....

i had this problem in the past... and found a workaround.

you said your camera works in guvcview, so start guvcview. then in skype, if you right click on a skype contact you get an option to share your screen,. choose share selection and draw a window around your open guvcview.

your contact can now see you

Haha, thanks 666philb....I had actually thought of doing that as I had tested the screen sharing and it worked perfectly...it would work! A pretty weird and...unique...workaround, but it would work!
