I see that futwerk has created 3 more typically beautiful backgrounds for Quirky7-light. :D

Thanks again futwerk, J

evince fix

#43 Post by jrb »

I discovered that evince in both A32 and A64 is broken. How did I miss that. It turns out it goes back to my installing a different version of openssl so wget would work without "--nocheckcertificate". Luckily wget and evince both seem happy with the original libcrypto.so.1.0.0 and libssl.so.1.0.0 :D so here are:
A32_evince_fix-0.1.pet
A64_evince_fix-0.1.pet
Please do some wget tests to make sure I am right. If everything works well I will include in the first ISO update.

Cheers, J

Edit: fixed in 1st update

Odd thing: using apulse with palemoon solves the problem.

This project got my eyes for a few days. I been reading your post. I like the small footprint and the fact that may run in many old PC. For example, I could spare 500MB-1GB for this project + puppysave on each of my USB memories. Small price to pay, knowing that I will have a working Puppy with me all the time.

You guys never concluded you discussion on Abiword/Gnumeric/Office. What is your conclusion base on the smallest footprint?

I guess you stick with palemoon.

Thanks ahead.

Thanks for testing watchdog.
Interesting find on Palemoon. I have fredx181's extra apulse libs for Firefox:
  • libatomic.so.1 libpulse-mainloop-glib.so.0 libpulse.so.0 libatomic.so.1.1.0 libpulse-simple.so.0
built in to Q7. Did you have to add more than that? Palemoon has crashed several times on https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia but only when I've had three or more tabs open and not while playing videos. No problem with Vivaldi.

My satellite bandwidth is very low at times so it makes it difficult to be sure what causes problems. I tried responding this morning but couldn't get the response to upload, both in Palemoon and Vivaldi. :(

Edit: apulse included in 1st update

I have only installed OscarTalks' apulse:

http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/apulse-0.1.12-x86_64.pet

Then run palemoon with:

Code: Select all

apulse /path-to/palemoon "$@"
The workaround came reading reports of crashing and segfaulting palemoon because of sound.

I use portable versions of other browsers which already have extralibs.

Glad you like it. Over the years I've salvaged many old computers with Puppy. I still have several and I've given many away. Creeping bloat has made it more difficult but I'm hoping this project will work well for several years.

Your question about Goffice got me thinking. I don't know it you read my comments on FreeOffice but I thought a comparison of ram usage betwee the two would be of value:
  • Startup - Actual Used RAM: 129 MB
Textmaker - new document - Actual Used RAM: 210 MB
Textmaker - 603 page document - Actual Used RAM: 225 MB
Install goffice - Actual Used RAM: 139 MB
Abiword - startup - Actual Used RAM: 156 MB
Abiword - 603 page document - Actual Used RAM: 327 MB
You can see that a new document in Abiword uses 54 MB less. But the same large document uses 100MB more. Add to that every time I have used Abiword with a document over two pages or even one page with an image it has crashed. My choice seems clear.

As for Palemoon, as much as I like it and the people who make it, it seems to be struggling a bit right now. I have included installers for Firefox and Vivaldi. Seamonkey and Chromium work well. There are a number of portable browsers in the Browser section of the forum that are good too.

Q7-light is a work in progress right now. I think I have the major bugs dealt with and will release an updated version soon.

Cheers, J

Thanks, I'll install OscarTalks' apulse in both A32 and A64 and try running Palemoon that way. If it helps I'll include it in Q7-light.

april32: evince does not show my default printer but only "Print to file". I'm printing with:

Code: Select all

lp file
which works.

I have switched to cups-1.4.8-w5c.pet.

EDIT: april64 has the same problem for evince.

I have inserted a menu item in right-click menu to print pdf files with lp.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
lp "$@"

Thanks for finding that. Here are fixes that work in cups-1,7,5. Hopefully they work in cups-1.4.8. No reboot required.

print_menu_fix-A32-0.6.pet
print_menu_fix-A64-0.6.pet

Will be in 2nd updated ISO.

This looks fairly good. No download yet. I would like to know what video drivers are included, hoping for i915.

Thanks and Regards

You're very welcome. Contents of /usr/X11R7/lib/dri:
  • i915_dri.so
    nouveau_dri.so
    r600_dri.so
    swrast_dri.so
    i965_dri.so
    r200_dri.so
    radeon_dri.so
    vmwgfx_dri.so
    kms_swrast_dri.so
    r300_dri.so
    radeonsi_dri.so
So far I'm very pleased. All the packages I've tried from PuppyTahr have worked so there's lots available. Once all the bugs are ironed out I'll see about offering up some accessories.

Cheers, J

You're very welcome Darry. Still looking for bugs, any feedback will be appreciated. I used to have an HP dv6000. I remember it had a nice large screen.

Yay! This fixed the problem with running Slimjet. Have only tried it in A32 but I'm sure it will work with A64 as well. :D

Thanks again watchdog.
