Ok, sure. Let me know if it's not on your side.
Just letting you know. I used a multiboot iso made by exton and installed to 4 gig sd card.
I used the gparted to nuke the number 1 row.

Code: Select all

# parted -l
Model: ATA TOSHIBA MK6028GA (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 1 1049kB 6293MB 6291MB primary ext4 boot
 2 6293MB 60.0GB 53.7GB extended
 5 6294MB 8441MB 2147MB logical linux-swap(v1)
 6 8442MB 18.1GB 9626MB logical ext3
 7 18.1GB 60.0GB 41.9GB logical ext4
Reason is, I could not get past my fubar save file loading from previous install using live usb of your
vangaurd_carolina made with unetbootin. So I figured I'd start with a clean slate.

Rebooted with the live usb of carolina_vangaurd and just went with the installer straight off.
I told the insaller to look in directory since I am running a install FROM usb.
Installer gives me /dev/sdb in left window pane so I left click it.
All the greyed out files from vanguard now show in the r/h window pane.
I pick go ahead and install. Then when done I proceed with grub4dos install.
I pick my internal drive mbr to install to which is flagged as "boot"
Let it do the defaults with no edits.
In other words. I do a "I have no clue so no edits during the install process".

Posting from it now with the pendrive pulled. Personal save was made at 512MB. Install partition is ext4. All applications from live session carried over into the installed session.

So not sure where I screwed the pooch. But previous errors were my mistake. So that is why I went into this long explanation in this post. To try and make matters clear.

Everything works. Touchscreen, Sound, Youtube. Wireless. Trackpad. Usb and SD ports.
Nothing more to say but to run it like I stole it.

Thanks to Battleshooter.

So, still mulling over the switch from X-Slacko... apparently I'm good at vacillation  :P

One question (for now!)...

X-Slacko is compatible with (of course) Slackware. So if I need something wacky that's not in X-Slacko or even Puppy in general, I can pull in a *.txz package as needed. (FWIW I can also pull in *.deb's, and I've been known to bring in *.rpm's too, via rpm2pet converter.)

What distro, if any, is Carolina Vanguard compatible with? As in, can I do the same thing with eg Ubuntu/Debian packages, or [insert distro here]'s stuff, or what?

Carolina Vanguard compatibility

#303 Post by mikeslr »

Hi starhawk,

Battleshooter, rg66, Geoffrey, elroy or --I still miss her-- jemimah can correct me if I'm wrong:

Rather than the question of what other Pups or distros applications are compatible with Carolina-Vanguard, it usually works the other way: Which of Carolina's applications are compatible (or easily modified to be compatible) with other Pups.
As a first step, check the extensive list of applications: http://smokey01.com/carolina/pet_packages-carolina/. Don't forget to click "parent" and examine the other subdirectories. And, I'm not sure if all of battleshooter's creations are found on smokey01. So its probably a good idea if your looking for something and don't find it on smokey01 to run a "wellminded search."
If in doubt its safe to try any SFS from any Pup variant. I'm pretty sure the Libreoffice 4.3.5 I use in Vanguard was built for Tahr. Kost@s built the Chromium and scabz the google-chrome. For gimp, you'll probably have to hunt for the 2.7.2 sfs, or use the 2.7.1 version on smokey01.
The strength of Carolina is that rather than trying to re-invent the wheel every couple of months, its devs have spent their time developing applications and making improvements.
Three years ago Jemimah took Barry K's Racy 5.2, added Xfce-thunar and a lot of applications and building modules. She called it Saluki. With her having gone "walk-about" rg66, geoffrey and elroy "forked" Saluki, naming the Pup Carolina. They worked since then adding more applications and keeping Carolina current and bug-free. Recently, battleshooter's interests turned to upgrading Carolina's kernel and glibc. Carolina-Vanguard is the result of that interest.
You may recall that Racy 5.2 was a T2 build. I think Carolina's PPM will automatically download applicable pets from either the Wary or Racy repos. But, if you find something there missing, you can try it. Just remember to either backup your SaveFile or (better still) run as PUPMODE 13 without an automatic Save. See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=81911

 that is a lot of stuff

I had no idea!

The only thing I don't see, that I would like to see, I didn't expect to see... could someone get KiCad working in Vanguard? That would be supremely awesome.

Right now I mostly use Chromium and LibreOffice, with a (very) small side of GIMP. I have one program I've tried to get running in WINE, I got it to work 98% but the missing two percent's a doozy and since it's a Win-only prog (and an old version at that) my workaround is a second computer running XP (it's running netless, so I don't care :P ). If anyone cares it's called CorelDRAW X3 -- 13th version of a professional graphics program. There's a couple important bits in the UI that don't work under WINE even once you argue the program itself into running... ugh. (Newer versions won't even install, according to WineHQ -- I checked.)

KiCad & CorelDraw

#305 Post by mikeslr »

Hi starhawk,

I know I've said this before, somewhere. But its important enough to repeat before discussing anything involving testing alien software: SFSes can't break anything as their unloading doesn't delete libraries needed by other applications. But PUPMODE 13 without an Automatic Save, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=81911 works better. On occasion I've been able to run applicationns as installed pets, while trying them as SFSes reported broken connections or missing libraries. Running under PUPMODE 13 without an automatic save, you can "install" a pet, restart x --so your OS recognizes its presence enabling you to run it*-- but until you save it isn't written to your SaveFile/Folder and it evaporates on reboot.

* run from the terminal and ldd will reveal missing libraries

A wellminded search revealed that you are already familiar with the KiCad pets and sfses Moose on the Loose published. Can't hurt to try them.

A couple of posts back battleshooter reported that Chromium downloaded direct from debian worked OOTB. For reasons I think have nothing to do with Carolina-Vanguard, I had less success with that Chromium. But scabz's google-chrome --built for TahrPup from the deb on google-chrome's site worked OOTB on the two computers I tried.
And I'm pretty certain I've used some stuff built for Slacko under Carolinas.

Its odd, but it seems to me that Carolina's T2 origin both make its pets easier to use or modify for other Pup variants; and make pets built for other Pup variants easier to use or modify under Carolina.

At any rate, its worth testing the packages direct from KiCad. Perhaps the debian package first.

Regarding CorelDraw: Well, that a problem of trying to get anything from Corel to run under Wine. The only suggestion I can make that you may not have already tried is old version. Of necessity --as there is no comparable Linux or even Windows application-- I run InfoCentral7 under wine. It was part of the WordPerfect7 Suite. I don't know if your can find it there --it seems to be both cryptic and byzantine-- but there's a lot of free stuff on Corel's public repo. ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/

About to install Vanguard :)

Looks like mister-electronico has a dotPET for KiCad in the relevant thread... I'll see if it will work. If not, I'll post in that thread asking for an updated version, and I'll link to it here.

EDIT: works... have to make the libraries dance after I install... that's a separate package, and the dialog box that lets me config that is too big for the netbook screen and won't resize :(

I've never done that -- does that let me go past the screen boundaries?

It grabs the window like a sheet of paper and moves it around so you can access buttons.
Another thing I do on my netbooks is hit the middle button on top r/h of window taskbar and see if the window fits the screen border on my netbook then.

Sometimes I get lucky and it does.

In Vanguard now, with a far more spacious (by which I mean "not cramped") 1280*1024 screen. Haven't (ironically) installed KiCad yet, though.

Carolina Vanguard is awesome :D I'm loving it already...

REGARDS.
Had a look at that, needs loads of gnome library files and it only does grub2 or burg by the look of it, not really compatible with grub4dos.

Spooky or what?! Cannot get this 32bit item to run BBC iPlayer - either! Tried all the usual v.10 and v.11 offerings, incl. as .pet s. All other 32-bit Puppies respond to a v.10 but not this one. Guess the issues in FD might be different, although none of the principal developers use iPlayer. Anyone for a holiday in the UK?
GetFlash v.11 in Wary64 6.99 works OK, so BK seems to have the answer to this infernal FP vs. BBC conflict bequested by the Blair & Gates stitch-up.

Later: see my http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 960#828960 p.6.

Printer issues. Ugh.

Post here (link below); probably better to reply over there, so we don't have half an answer in one place and half in the other...

Before I download 500 MB, it would be nice if any Vanguard user confirmed whether CUPS printing works.

TBH, I'd offer to try something else, but I'm on a desktop and of the two other printers I have with any semblance of function left (I've got a ton of derelicts), one's another HP (that I should probably order ink for as it's out) and the other is an older wires-only Canon on entirely the wrong floor of my house...

Printing fine to my HP4500 using a standard HPLIP 3.14.10 install accepting all of the dependencies except sane. libnetsnmp-15 had already been installed. I had a minimal minimal install using HPLIP 3.11 in the savefile I had updated but like starhawk I got the 'format not supported' error message. Probably missing GS or foomatic (shown as dependencies by the HPLIP 3.14.10 pet and installed) but I didn't sort it out, just went the 3.14.10 route. You'd know what was missing.

Edited: After reading starhawks post on the previous page. Also stripped the savefile, cleaned /var/cache/CUPS, and did a fresh HPLIP 3.11.10 install from the PPM, leaving out gutenprint and sane 'dependencies' only. HP4500 (wired ethernet network printer) is printing fine with this install.

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Problem exists, actually, with both the 3.11 dotPET and the 3.14 dotPET.

When I installed the 3.14 dotPET (after uninstalling the 3.11, of course) it showed no dependencies. That said, I'll see if I can find a Ghostscript dotPET in the repo, as that might resolve this.

Well, that didn't work :(

The specific error I'm getting is:

Code: Select all

Error:
         Unsupported format 'application/postscript'!
