So sorry for the late reply Joe,can't wait till retirement in Feb2010 so I can do what I want (learn linux the right way not the short cut way

)
In my next day off I'll post the info you asked for (using 2.16 )
if anyone have a problem with their TP fan there is a pet for IBM TP fan control ,I didn't work on my messed up TP A22e using Slaxer pup but worked on 2.16 ???!! I must be doing something wrong .....newbies...you got love'em
another way to get the fan working tips from this page:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ibm-acpi
and here is how to get The FN keys working:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_ge ... ys_to_work
side note :
Don't know if that is what is causing the over heating but I use the scanner and the printer heavely and specially with slaxer pup both of them works at the same time unlike what I use now (2.16) one at a time.
I'll be back

I've run into a problem after several successful saves to CD using SLAXERpuppy. I get the following message after the burn begins:
"Warning: 'cdrecord' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support is in use"
At that point the burn stops and after pressing enter, a new message comes up telling me the burn failed due to a problem with the CD/DVD
burner. Any thoughts?

Hi pistoi0 have you tried the real cdrecord tools? Puppy uses another set of cdtools and its just a system link called cdtools which leads to wodim. You could try the actual slackware cdrecord tools package, but I would back up my pupsave first. Or wait for bigbass to respond.

in 412 cdrtools isn't installed strange to get the error message forked the error codes too :0
"cdrkit-1.1.6" "cdrkit 1.1.6: Portable command-line CD/DVD recorder software"
on "BuildingBlock +libcap 1940K" \
"cdrtools-2.01.01a36" "cdrtools 2.01.01a36: cd recorder utilities (puppy4 has cdrkit - better)"
off "BuildingBlock 2240K" \
use this one only nothing else needed compiled with ziosfs on Slaxer
cdrtools-2.01.01a53
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/cdrtools-2 ... 1-slxr.pet
note: this was compiled from source it is the same version number as slackware 12.2 is using presently
needs to be tested how it integrates with the burning programs installed
this should be tested puppy pfix=ram
then install the package
back up plan :
---------- just in case looking ahead --------------
I compiled the latest cdrtools
cdrtools-2.01.01a62-i486-slxr.pet
looking ahead
also compiled this
cdrkit-1.1.2-i486-slxr.pet
if needed

Thanks, big_bass.
I downloaded the new cdrtools-2.01.01a53. Where should I extract it to?
Also. I tried a new download of Slaxer and that saved to CD just fine. So, my HW is ok.

Ooops! Just realized its a .pet

Just gave it a try. Sorry, no luck. Tried it with pfix=ram as well. The .pet loaded successfully, but got the same result as previously. Still getting the message that there is a problem with cd/dvd burner. However, I rule that out, since a fresh burn of Slaxer saved well and repeatedly.

thanks for reporting
what a story the whole cdrkit vs cdrtools
unique build script too
please keep me posted if you have burn errors
warnings are annoying but if it works we can live with it
unzipper_dragNdrop *txz *tgz *.tar.gz *.tar.bz2

unpackager script in the right click rox menu I use many times a day
I wrote this first as a script for myself but then added a backend for the *txz
packages and bundled it together
Do you have a need for speed
then this is for you has a drag n drop too
handles
# *.txz the new format slackware
# *.tgz
# *.tar.gz
# *.tar.bz2
# *.pet
# *.pup
# *.gz (Not initrd.gz though have another for that)
it makes the folder name for you automatically
you'll love it
for an icon for the script
#first time set up only
#I made this icon for the dragndrop
Code: Select all
rox -s /usr/share/pixmaps/unzip_package.png
#right click on the unzipper_dragNdrop
#Set icon ...
#then drag /usr/share/pixmaps/unzip_package.png in the box

Slaxer_Pup
can install slackware packages old and new directly without any conversions or repackaging and has its own package management built in now is that too cool or what

Hi Joe,
When Puppy 4.3 comes out, and the new Slackware, do you intent to upgade Slaxer_pup? The new puppy ppm has support ootb for Slackware packages, and can be configured to link straight to the Slackware repos. (It is by default in spup, built from woof).
Cheers
Mick.

Hey Micko
slaxer pup will be upgraded but that is independent to whats happening with puppy 4.3 as a base is concerned .
There may be some good packages to use from it but I havent investigated that yet
I don't intened to use PPM. I am using a more direct way using the official slackware package management system the way its used in it's native slackware distro keeping things the standard way of doing things since slackware begun .I spent a lot of time to set it up correctly for puppy
I prefer the linux way of doing things thats why I build packages
and all of the packages I make should work fine on any 4.12 based puppy or derivative without modifications
*except if it is a kernel dependent app or module but that's a given *
question: Will slaxer pup continue to be upgraded ?
Answer: yes.

Hi Jo remember when I asked about xz format and slackware, I tried what you provided and it didn't work on 4.22, today there was another xz package posted o the forum, So with 2.14X running I compiled
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/u ... rig.tar.gz
and tried that using File-Roller that also included with 2.14X and it worked

It extract without issue

It wouldn't work on Xarchiver
So if your looking for a good archiver, File-Roller looks to be it

This is the Slaxer Pup icon for txz packages for rox
so it can be distinguished from the compressed files quickly
I will clarify this for those who may be
confused to what slaxer pup can do already
1.)install slackware packages directly *.tgz the standard slackware package
2.)install the very latest compressed format *txz directly also
3.) I wrote a front end drag N drop script as "a plus" for easy drag unzipping of the most used formats
# *.txz the new format slackware
# *.tgz
# *.tar.gz
# *.tar.bz2
# *.pet
# *.pup
# *.gz (Not initrd.gz though have another for that)
for the linux user that loves packages and freedom to install
and build it the way they like
here is the script I wrote for the drag N drop tool lite fast front end
for those who do want a way to handle packages directly without an archiving GUI even Pupzip the official puppy unzipping script
launches Xachive to handle unzipping
this script I wrote works with all the compressed formats directly
except for *txz that requires a binary conversion provided as the backend
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
#code by Joe arose big_bass
#this is a very fast drag n drop tool
#for decompressing the following formats
#it coupled with rox to get the right click
#new icon
#in the menu
# *.txz the new format slackware
# *.tgz
# *.tar.gz
# *.tar.bz2
# *.pet
# *.pup
# *.gz (Not initrd.gz though have another for that)
# the *.pup was quite a dance
# no gui tool is used as a backend so this is fast
#
#first time set up only
#I made this icon for the dragndrop
#rox -s /usr/share/pixmaps/unzip_package.png
#right click on the unzipper_dragNdrop
#Set icon ...
#then drag /usr/share/pixmaps/unzip_package.png in the box
#depends on
# xz built in already
#for *txz packages

Joe,
Just a note to share how incredibly solid and reliable Slaxer_Pup has been. You managed to breathe new life into my former favorite Puppy, 4.1.2. The combination of 4.1.2 and Slackware stability and hardware detection makes for, dare I say it, the best Puppy ever.
I was using Slaxer when 4.3 development began and moved operations to it. 4.3 is a great release too but nowhere as robust as Slaxer. So here I am back again where I'm likely to stay.
I understand that you're taking a break from Puppy. Well take it and be a better man for the exercise. If you do decide to contribute a Slackware 13 based Puppy (4.3 or 4.12), I for one will be in there rooting for you. Otherwise, please think twice or three times before leaving us altogether.
Again thanks,
Rick

Hi
An outstanding Puppy - much better than 1st impression and
appearances would imply.
Combined with all the little goodies - like whiteout cleaner and cache cleaner - only 2 small examples - of the many little gems you have provided for both SlaxerPup and other Pup's.
We are truly in your debt - Thanks a million for all you've done for us.
Don't be a total stranger for too long.
Very best regards.

I believe change is for things that
need be changed
not change just for the sake of change
so good changes are inevitable

Thanks Ray MK
I kept the easy things to change *as is*
such as the desktop that gives the end user the freedom to make it look
however they want ... I did though use a custom ROX theme
I will add some flare to the next one just to highlight the change of direction that will be taken so there would be no confussion to which version you are running
--------------------------------------------->
just to clear up any doubts
I took some time off for the good of myself and others
I have been a workaholic
"Don't be a total stranger for too long."
that's the only thing that has changed
I know how much work is needed for the next step in building a distro
and I had to get ready for it , and now I am
meanwhile the slackware pkgtool
combined with "amigo's" SRC2PKG program
will keep anyone busy for a long time building good stuff
amigo (Gilbert ) did an outstanding job for slackware users
with his src2pkg <a source to package app > I just made it all jive with slaxer-pup so now all that power is added for us too
not just for the lucky slackware users
Joe
