Puppy Squeeze 009 Development
xchat2 for dpup, autoconnects to #puppylinux, customized font and layout - uses tabs for channel switcher by default, couldn't get links to open in seamonkey on single click, but there's option "Open in Seamonkey on right click...

All those problems that appeared in 005 are really weird ... I have no idea where the **** they come from. Especially the missing laptop mode.
The top priorities atm are X (touchpads, keyboard layouts) and CUPS. I'm working on that.
Can anyone install the Lupu ffmpeg3 (I think it's in the "5" repo) and report if any gxine problems are gone?

dpup-005 is a well equipped Puppy with `mrxvt` and many things more to investigate
well done Iguleder !
one of the first things I do when running a new pupplet is to add more desktops to .jwmrc-tray ...
running `jwmconfig` ... I lost the taskbar !!
Changing the line 83 /usr/local/jwmconfig2/virtualDesk
from
to
seems to do the trick
wondering how so many pupplets go fine with the original code

Hmmm.... mrxvt sux badly IMO.. well this version any way.. try running './configure --help' with mplayer.. even in fullsceen, only outputs about 100 lines.. is there a config for that?
Oh, and every version of mplayer, including the squeeze one, seg faults, even when I did manage to successfully build.. that's strange.
BTW, Cmake is broken, needed for some weird progs that don't like configure scripts. It was broken in Lupu too and compiled fine there.. it's a 10 meg pet, not worth the upload. It should compile ok, but you may need liblzma plus dev.
Stu90, I suspect the icon is compiled in with parcellite.
On the plus side, pekwm is a fun little wm, and I found (well Eyes-Only did) a fun little panel called 'bmpanel'.. 20k pet. (depends on imlib2). if any one cares I'll upload. Made a little theme switcher gui too.
The ffmpeg marginally improved gxine.. very marginal
.. there seem to be codecs missing, if that is all it is then it may be ok, it plays a small amount of video but it wont budge with avi, mp4,wmv or real formats.
Still, it is fun!
Cheers

I am sorry!dr-kart wrote:BootManager configure bootup --> Startup services:
in dpup-004 - "laptop mode" service is on by default
in dpup-005 - THERE IS NO "laptop mode" ever
What went wrong?
The "laptop mode" service became available after laptop-mode-tools install via PPM from debian-squeeze-main repo ONLY. (And no matter dpup-004 or 005.)
Sorry again

Yeah we should definitely increase number of output lines in mrxvt, I will look into configuration options for it. I used "./configure -- help | more" for some apps - temporary workaround.

Try this: make file /root/.mrxvtrc
Add this line:
Found @ http://linux.die.net/man/1/mrxvt
Add this line:
Code: Select all
Mrxvt.vt0.saveLines: 600
Mrxvt.vt1.saveLines: 600
Mrxvt.vt2.saveLines: 600

mrxvtKarl Godt wrote:dpup-005 is a well equipped Puppy with `mrxvt` and many things more to investigate
It disappears only if specific country localization is set (Desktop menu > chooselocale).
In my case, mrxvt became unavailable as soon as I set hu_HU. Fortunately, when I checked UTF-8 encoding, mrxvt returned.
Karl, maybe you selected de_DE@euro. In this case, mrxvt disappears, too. Tick UTF-8 or select de_DE.
gxine
I think it is much better if we simply forget gxine. I typed the fix proposed by upnorth (on p17) then gxine started. However, file compatibility was poor. No sound for mp4, gp3, no webm playback. I installed mplayer-post-1.0rc3-svn-31792-i486.pet. Plays all files I tried.
seamonkey
2.1b1 outperforms 2.0 series them even if it is still in beta stage. It is interesting that useragent line of 2.1 betas masquerades SM to Firefox. (See line 66 of the browser-prefs.js).
look-and-feel
It is good that dpup uses a (here "a" also means "one") new set of desktop icons. I propose to forget the rest except smooth-color and add more from http://puppy.b0x.me/desktop-iconsets
Similarly, there is "a" new default background. I think dpup deserves a set of "less funny" wallpapers.

This one i just extracted to a ext3 partition, it creates the dir "seamonkey". I just click "seamonkey" from rox and it runs. It assumes the existing seamonkey profile. Thats the "no install" method, anyway.

Before you read this: yes, I'm serious.
Well, as I said already, I have a new job (my first serious job).
I'm going to be quite busy till next week, I won't be home tommorow and on both Friday and Saturday. I'm going to work somewhere close to the Dead Sea. My netbook will accompany me (probably) but I'm almost certain that I won't have internet access.
So, here's my question: can anyone take it from here? I can upload all the custom PETs used in 005, all my Woof modifications and some required extras, plus a detailed guide with the exact 005 recipe so someone can make 006 and maybe even releases beyond it.
I'm not saying that I'm leaving this project or something, hell no; but I'm too busy (in the near future, at least) to work on it full-time and I'm a total idiot, I'm not very talented as you can see. We need someone to lead this project, someone with the right skills and the passion to turn this into a Puppy paradise.
I'm always here to test, fix bugs and whatever. I'm just offering someone better than me the opportunity to make 006.
EDIT: have you noticed the views count for the popular threads in this forum? Kinda interesting to see dpup gets lots of views, I guess people are attracted to the "Debian"

CRAZY : running dpup-001 and dpup-003 adding more screens works without problems !!!
the code is still original at /usr/local/jwmconfig2/virtualDesk :

It's OK !!!Well, as I said already, I have a new job (my first serious job)
Iguleder congrats on the real job
BTW, I tried compiling both mplayer and vlc.
mplayer didn't segfault but it wouldn't load subtitles and buged on dvd chapter change - it stops playing and exits.
vlc seems quite ok but it didn't handle subtitles either so I'm thinking we might be missing some lib that handles that, I'm recompiling vlc now with different options and will see how it works, I'm compiling it without gui this time, I tried ncurses but it sucks bad and dbus control system isn't properly maintained / documented to try to make some usefull gtk frontend.
sc0tman made a nice vlc-gtk frontend though which can be used.
without gui pet should be less then 3 MB and about 7 MB or less installed, I will also add rox right clicks to open video files with vlc.
