Moreover, I saw Abiword can now read DOCX files, which is great, but sadly enough other Office2007 softwares do not seem to be covered by other Puppy 4.3.2 enclosed programs (Gnumeric). That is a pity because most spreadsheets around are in XLSX format and OpenOffice 3.x is way too heavy for my computer. Is there anything around for fixing the problem?

Thanks again!
Haven't tried it, but looks like an online converter:

Try this to make your PC shut down.

I've been using 4.32 as my main system since v3 was released.Triple booting Mepis 8.0, Puppy 4.31 and 4.32.......installed 4.32 just for testing but it just works. :)
Seems very solid and reliable........great job so far.

As to CD ejection on shut down, I have yet to see a version of Puppy that was written with a script to eject the CD if you were running from the CD.
As to powering off when you select shutdown, I use a boot option of acpi=force on 2 old laptops and both powered off when I selected shutdown.
You might also try "acpi=noacpi".
I had to use that on one laptop.

Thanks, but it seems working just for docx and not for xlsx

Great! It works!

I might be wrong because it was ages I was not running a live CD, but I remember that when turning the PC off - while the OS halted but did not switch the power off - I could eject the CD manually, pressing on the eject button, and worked. Now it is impossible.

Sensitivity to Power Cuts

#266 Post by Snail »

430 never shut down cleanly for me. Whenever the ext2 pupsave file was fscked after shutdown, there were always errors found. However, they never seemed to affect performance. Apparently, this is a known behaviour for 430/431. By contrast, my ext2 pupsave under 432 has always been found to be clean after normal shutdown when I fsck it.

However, unclean shutdown after power outage shows a different situation. I am no stranger to power failures due to a dicey power supply situation. My 430 pupsave must have been subjected to literally dozens of powercut shutdowns, and my Puppee421 pupsave to even more. I never knew about fsck until recently, so I just carried on regardless. I never noticed any problems and fsck was still able to fix things when I finally got around to doing it. Limited use of PCLinuxOS also seemed to be robust in this situation. Windows Vista seems a bit more picky but acceptable for the extremely limited use it gets. However, 432 seems to be extremely intolerant of even a single power cut. The main use I have been making of 432 is using Seamonkey either browsing or IMAP mail. After a powercut, the profile is generally a mess. Deleting it and copying back a backup is the only option. Is there any reason why 432/seamonkey 2 is so much more sensitive? This is a real problem to me. I had switched over to 432 as my main OS but it looks as thouch I may to go back to 431 or 4311 if this can't easily be fixed.

The mail notification does not seem to work. Setting it to both show an alert and play the system new mail sound and then pressing the preview button results in no action and mail pushed in by the IMAP "idle" command doesn't announce itself either.

lol I wasn't getting updates in my gmail account, lol I just noticed in the forum that there was post, Most of my work on this will be on weekends, I'm now working full-time doing construction work during the week and when I come home I'm pretty played-out and spend what time I have mostly with the family. But yes I'll continue with it, I also like to wait a bit to get test results and fixes etc from users :)

ttuuxxx,

Kudos for a fine update. I've tested it on three systems.

1. System: BFG NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS 512MB, Asus P6T Motherboard, Intel core i7-920 (8MB Cache, 2.66 GHz), DDR3 3GB 1333MHz ram, Pioneer DVR-2910 DVD+-RW Dual Layer Burner, Realtek ALC1200 Audio, HP Photosmart 5280 All-in-One. Everything appears to be working fine, including the extra software that I like to install ie. OpenOffice3.2, Amarok, Wine, e-Sword and others. Also used this installation to create a USB installation on a fat32 flash drive.

2. Frugal installation on an old Sony vaio laptop with only 64MB ram. Everything appears to be working fine.

3. Used the USB on a Dell Dimension E510, 2x Intel Pentium CPU 2.80GHz. All software seems to be working fine except for sound. Alsa appears to configure properly and alsa mixer seems to be working, however no speaker icon shows so I can't determine if the volume is just turned down. Alsa mixer shows all settings at 100. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Jim :D

Here's a trick I just learned.

In some applications like seamonkey, firefox, chrome, etc - the interface fonts (like the menus) render in a really small condensed font that's hard to read. Sometimes, there's a way to override it in the application, like editing userChrome.css. But a better way is to fix it globally by adding the following to /etc/fonts/local.conf

Code: Select all

        <alias>
                <family>sans-serif</family>
                <prefer>
                        <family>DejaVu Sans</family>
                </prefer>
        </alias>

Keep on testing'

#271 Post by Gurglin »

Hi,

I keep on testing the live CD (V3) on my presario 14xl250.

1) I set XOrg on LCD 1024x768x24, but the display gets blank and have to "shutdown" -> "restart X server" for seeing the monitor. It was not like that the first time I tested 4.3.2

2) Sound is OK

3) Glipper keeps on popping out on the lower bar (at the right hand side). Is that annoying thing a default automatic software?

4) when not working, after a few minutes the display freezes (blanks), but after a couple of minutes it starts again... I find it strange.

Gtkam is crashing during a camera picture file save with segmentation fault on Thinkpad T42 using 4.3.2 rev.3.

It works in Puppy 4.1.2 (with same camera) on ASUS mb desktop.

ttuuxxx, can we have a link to the latest version please?

:lol: now i've got a working satellite link I want to try it out and i've got a spare partition that's just been waiting for you since you started on 4.3.2.

oh yes, hardware is an old acer V3700GX with 4gig of ram and using the onboard video. The only problems i've found so far is it likes xvesa and crashes with xorg.

btw for those finding downloads dropping out, I was given a hint to suspend and restart them, it works with firefox, anyway. saves shutting down and all that hastle.

Groovin' on v3, 4.3.2, ttuuxxx; nicely done! I am noticing some of the niceties in the corners, volume control, blinky, etc. Looks good. I got it going on the work computer via a 1gig flash drive...used the livecd to make the flash drive bootable, etc. Nice! 8)

..just steppin' in out of the rain (so to speak, not testing p432 personally :| )

@Gurglin
1) yah, sometimes re-X is needed for xorg (or other things). Possibly also a change in v3 or maybe just on initial run?
..
3) Glipper's a clipboard manager (for managing clipboard content, history & stuff), it should play nice and go away if you tell it to (r-click and find the settings on the traycon's context menu). Might have to re-X for the setting to 'take' - there should also be line(s) in /root/.xinitrc that's relevant to glipper loading - you might comment out if glipper continues to be annoying. It can be a handy thing if you use the clipboard a lot (and if glipper works properly).

4) sounds like the pupX 'screensaver' kicking in - normally blanks the screen after like 10 min (600 sec) of inactivity. Puppy is green by default (and to save laptop batts)

off-the-cuff - Xvesa would be wonderful for a 'just works' (if it does or can be made to..)
having a simple x-display is a good thing :)

You2pup doesn't work.

I wonder how many users will not know that flashblock is enabled by default, and then remove this clutter from the tool bar by resetting defaults, and not know why flash won't work on YouTube.

Question: Wouldn't AdBlockPlus be a substitute for flashblock?

BTW I would like to remove the icon for flashblock. I would like to remove the icon for Print. I would like to remove the icon for clipboard. That is, remove them so I don't see them next time I restart the computer.

Why am I being told I have to download Java?
