Updated a frugal installation of luci-243/KDE Trinity and a frugal installation of luci-244 to luci-245. Both installations upgraded without a problem and apparently work fine.
Kudos,

Fresh frugal install of Luci-245 on the old P3 test box.
Initial boot had working sound, internet and the correct 1024x768 screen resolution. But, after following my normal procedure and setting my time zone as "US Central" w/ Personalize Settings .......my clock was 6 hrs ahead.Hasn't been a problem in prior releases here.Just remembered, I did check numlock this time....I usually don't.
And Firewallstate didn't disappear this time either.....
Other than the clock issue things are looking good.

Howdy All,
In the last several versions of LUCI, Pburn fails to recognize a
cd-dvd present in the drive (SR0).
Unable to blank a disk.
Anyone else have this problem?
Puppy 5.1.1, Pburn 3.2.6 works fine!
Thanx.

Running 245 from a bootflash install, wired internet and sound are
working fine,resolution was correct too.
I downloaded and installed the full nvidia 260 driver in quickpet,
01micko, if I minimize the terminal that glxgears is running in I get
some *really* fast framerates.

Luci-245 live pfix=ram on the main Linux box. Initial boot had working internet and the correct resolution (1440x900) but muted sound.
Did
not check numlocks this time and no clock problem.
Installed SeaMonkey and updated to 2.0.11 and a Nvidia driver.

Upgraded my Luci/Trinity install from 244 to 245.........only apparent problem is with the clock.........again.
Confirmed the time zone on initial boot, clock was hours off, and needed to reset date and time again to get things right.. Time zone was left alone at us central.

Seems UTC/Localtime issue.
Are you aware your PC hardware clock is UTC or Localtime?
If you are dual booting with Windows, it must be Localtime, i guess.
Run again the Personalize Settings to see the 'Use UTC Hardware Clock' is set or reset.

The machine in question does have Windows 2000 installed.......... along with about 20 various Linux installs.
'Use UTC Hardware Clock' is unchecked...........looking at it now.
The other box, without the clock problem, is all Linux.

ok
*gnumeric doesn't have an icon in the menu, plus it's called with "%U" which don't work in puppy, the .desktop file needs fixing
*the network_tray is still the old version .. ttuuxxx new icons aren't there
*time was ok for me
*should we or shouldn't we have pidgin in the browser chooser? I am going to put it on the internet page in quickpet and shift Kompozer to the next page and replace Dia anyway.
* I wonder why the tray behaviour has changed? Seem to need to hold a right click to use the tray apps, eg Firewallstate, network_tray.. retrovol is ok. These were ok before about 240 I think.
*geany opens up with the geany config
*video wizard don't work so I have a get-around..
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
. /etc/DISTRO_SPECS
if [[ "$DISTRO_NAME" == "Lucid Puppy" ]];then gtkdialog-splash -placement top -fontsize large -icon gtk-info -timeout 10 -bg yellow -close box -text "Quickpet wil now open. Please choose the Drivers tab to test and upgrade your video drivers" &
sleep 3 && exec quickpet
else
exec /usr/local/video_upgrade/video_upgrade_wizard
fi
/usr/sbin/video_upgrade_wizard (I'll attach)
Note, updated but was never downloaded
*I know KarlGodt tried to fix the jwm/gtk them issue but now it just fails, best to remove it, I'll attach an adjusted file without that button
Cheers

Minor stuff on 245:
No way to change the timezone. When you go to Desktop | Country Settings | Set Timezone, Puppy displays a "Usage for Xdialog" screen.
On first boot, if you add or move desktop icons, your changes will be lost. Once the savefile has been created, changes are retained.

The much smaller gnumeric packages I uploaded already comes with a proper .desktop file, One of the first things I always check, is the icon location and the exec path. These 2 items usually get messed up somehow.
I guess its the difference between using Ubuntu packages vs Custom puppy versions. I also compiled Gnumeric without Gconf and schema files since they are a waste of space and are large distro bloat. Something you'll always get with Ubuntu/Gnome compiled apps, and never seen on puppy 1-4, Wary/Quirky releases. If you need space compile apps without them. Just edit the devX to do it. typically edit 3 paths

If you want to take it out of Browser Installer, that suits me. No use for overkill.

I thought it was only firewallstate, and tasmod knows about that. But I see what you mean, it is the network_tray also. I don't know. Could Woof have done it? I'll look but I can't think of a change that would have done it that I made.

Thank you for the suggestions. We could still stand to lose a few hundred more megabytes.
For video freaks the i686 versions of the ffmpeg libraries will be available in PPM (not yet--the ones there now are the old ones for 5.1.1)
Why the Return? 01micko and playdayz agree that this seems to be the most stable form of Puppy. It is good to keep supporting 256MB ram computers and to do that the iso needs to be < 128MB. Otherwise Puppy either will not load completely and/or will not run at a usable speed (at least on a percentage of computers). This puts a kind of "natural" limit on at least one breed of puppy.
So what have we done with Lucid 5.2? We have upgraded, updated, and/or improved all of the main programs as well as many of the other programs in the menu: quickpet, gnome-mplayer, mplayer, sylpheed, mtpaint, gnumeric, abiword, geany, as well as system programs such as e2fsprogs. We have incorporated numerous improvements from the latest version of Woof. We have made sfs programs installable with a single click. We have added a very tidy firstrun wizard screen--also very stable and effective. We are still filling the PPM with great programs tested and configured for Lucid 5.2 including quite a few language packs.. We have refined operation throughout. And we have removed two programs that didn’t work very well.
Luci-243. The big news is the small, fast surprise. Who will find it first?
Also Quickpet4rc9, Browser-Installer 2.2, plus 4 patches found by Barry for Woof.
A Feature Freeze: Luci-242 Everything in the iso is an inter-related system and only Barry has any chance of knowing how any given change will echo through the system. So, no more, “Hey that’s a good idea. It can’t hurt anything.

Well, yes, this is a time that is very important. Sometimes it has been over a week between development releases. We're close. Very close.

These are my reasons for not using the gnumeric and abiword prepared by ttuuxxx.
I did not use either the gnumeric or the abiword in luci-245. I count about 3MB of compressed savings, which I agree is significant. The thing is though that we have been testing this Abiword for a couple of months and it has been smooth. I know this was hard work. This close to release we would not fix something unless it was broken. Gnumeric 1.10.8 was broken, but the Ubuntu package of 1.10.12 may work out. That is just changing one package rather than changing 3 packages. IMO that makes the chance of a problem rippling through the system much less. Plus the one package is a Ubuntu package--and that is a good thing--because one reason we prefer Ubuntu packages is there is a presumption of compatibility with all the other Ubuntu binaries we have in the system. We are under the magic number of 128MB so it is not as crucial to save space.
This is a conservative approach I know--I *hope* it is a conservative approach because that is what is required of me at this stage. The motto is “Fix only what is broken, and fix it with the simplest possible change.
