Slaxer_Pup 4.12 solid and stable non woof build
Hi Pooklaroux,
I just went to facebook and the first update on my page was a youtube video (imagine that!) -- and it gave me an error message too; I also have just 256mb of RAM. It said something about trying to run Adobe Flash (high definition) on an unsupported system. I'd think it should just automatically 'step down' so it's not in HD for someone who's on a low memory system, but whatever.... it showed for Linux it wants a minimum of 512mb of RAM and 128mb of video memory. Sheesh!
Edit to above on facebook/ youtube: I just went back and clicked on the actual link to the video which brought me to the youtube page -- then I allowed the relevant scripts (ytmg and youtube?) using NoScript add-on, and the video played ok. So if you're using FF with NoScripts it may be you have to go about it that way.
And big_bass or whoever, I had an issue trying to get Gtkam to work. I selected the option under 'camera' to Add a camera, I selected mine (Sony DSC S40) and it changed the port from 'serial port' to 'usb port' just fine after I selected it, but then it gave me a message saying 'could not initialize camera'. I tried it before and after I mounted the 'drive' for the camera (/mnt/sdb1). After I mounted it and got the same error message a couple times (but one of the times it changed my camera model to 'mass storage device' and then wouldn't pull that up either) I did use Fotoxx Image viewer and Gimp to pull up a couple pictures (using open file option) and they found them and pulled them up just fine. Just FYI.
I'm not sure if there's anything I'd want to do in Gtkam that I can't do in Fotoxx, but I wanted to check it out; just in case...
Just to recap,I'm using Slaxer Pup 4.1.2 on an IBM Thinkpad Pentium III 498mhz, 256mb ram, 1028x764x24 LCD panel, camera is a Sony DSC S40 -- it was on the 'pick list', it's 4.3 megapixels I think.

Facebook is not open source friendly..I believe microsoft now have a big interest in the company...as you notice youtube does not force the HD option.
Gtkam is crap basically...mass storage is the best way if available...we take the sd card out of our canon rather than waste time using the usb lead.
And this puppy varient is very good due to a proper kernel rather than the usual mickey mouse job

Beautiful fast puppy
Very nice work Big Bass. It's fast and I like the icon theme. Only thing is that my drives show up as sda and also as hda. I have 9 drive icons on the desktop, I thought hda was obsolete. Pardon my noobness please. I would like to stick with sda.
Drive mounting
Just noticed something.... for example..
clicking on sda5 brings up Pmount. Clicking hda5 brings up Rox showing hda5. Which is better? I would rather have Rox open up the partition rather than Pmount just sitting there.
Gparted reads the drives as hda. Which should I use? Will I have problems?

Thanks for taking a spin that ROX theme is very complete
it shows many nice images
I really like the "old standard linux way" how the drivers are shown
so it a preference ... I guess
this is linux so anything could be hacked the way you prefer
Note: many how to's use the older format so its easier to understand
this is what your system sees listed as drives
here is how my drives are listed

I believe the later flash players are pushed as they have drm support...so the javascript is written that way even though you can actually play the content...it's surprising how many sites still work with flash 7 in spite of warnings/threats/inferiority complexes.
Me like hda over for sda for hard drives too...h for hard in my head.
s for solid maybe

I use it all the time - a distinct aesthetic & speed improvement, but, yes you have to enable java/flash occasionally....

for under 1MB
you get an editor ,web tools
and stability
bluefish-1.0.7-i486-slxr.pet
click_here
there may be other versions
but I am compiling for slaxer_pup
so slaxer will have it's own packages -slxr that's my sig on the package

full install problem
Hello My Good Friend Joe
till few days ago I used Slaxer pup frugal install.I thought it was time to do full install and make it the only OS used, but I have 2 problems:
problem # 1 : the modem didn't work although I carefully did what I have done before.same problem I reported before which was /dev/ttySM0 no such device.
problem #2: which is very disturbing and scared me. I used slaxer for few hours longer than I usually do for work related and noticed the fan doesn't work and the cpu got so hot under there I couldn't touch the back then something I haven't experienced since using linux happened. It froze and all the documents I scanned and all the data I spent hours entering it were lost.I thought only with frugal install that doesn't get saved till session ends not with full install to be saved as I finish each process?!
the only thing I could do is run wmpower and keep an eye on the temp and not to keep the laptop on for more than 2hrs.
I don't care much about getting the modem to work .I can use the work's network but just wanted to let you know the issue with full install so other users be aware of it.
your advice would be much appreciated to help me fix the fan problem or why it gets too hot more than any other puppy version or any other linux distro for that matter.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1.) Don't run the computer without the fan working correctly.
*sometimes the fan gets noisy before it dies sometimes they just stop
check the air duct where the computer takes in air to see if its blocking the intake of air
if you have easy access to see the fan and fins make sure they are clean ( using filtered compressed air if they need to be cleaned )
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when the fan is verified to be working correctly then
2.)make sure you test with a live cd any version you prefer
if you test with puppy use the code at boot up
Code: Select all
puppy pfix=ram
the first clue here for me is the module didnt load
which means most likely the "pup_412.sfs"
is the wrong one booting
so the easy way to check is
make sure there is no other pup_412.sfs
then verify with the one on the cd
http://puppy2.org/slaxer/Slaxer_Pup-4.12_USB.iso
the boot screen shows this on the upgraded USB initrd
"Slaxer Pup 4.12 2.6.27.7 kernel aufs +lzm +USB initrd "
copy everything over from the cd to be sure
there are no older files
------------------------------------------------
*a corrupted pup save wont allow modules to load also
do files system check on pup_save (and host part. if ext2)
Code: Select all
puppy pfix=fsck

Hello JoeEZ4arabs
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So sorry if I confused you.I modem works when I run Salxer frugal install but didn't work on full install with the same error reported before.
as for the fan ,it works just fine even without adding [acpi=force] .only on slaxer pup.
I better keep slaxer pup running from a cd or usb and save to hd because that works just fine .besides its much safer.
best wishes my Good Friend.[/quote]
thanks muggins
updated to version .03 to now work for older puppy versions too 7-26-09
I wrote a "quick" info get script to help solve problems
Paul (pakt) added to it a another step he added more logs
and had it all placed in one folder
this script is now called info_get_v03.tar.gz
attached
1. download it
2. unzip it
3 click on this script----> info_get_v03
4 this compressed file gets auto built for you info_tarball.tar.gz
5 attach it to your forum post
more people can find what went wrong
fixing problems faster
*this will work for any version of puppy*
files that get saved are:
bootkernel.log
cpuinfo.txt
ddcprobe.txt
dmesg.txt
dmidecode.txt
elspci-l.txt
lsmod.txt
meminfo.txt
xerrs.log
Xorg.0.log

This is just for your info on my system running Puppy 421 frugal.
It will not display scsi devices in the report since I am not running a version with scsi support and have not added it.
But here is my tarball.
