Windows 7 says "USB device not recognized"
Tried a bunch of things. Removed power and held down the power button for 30+ seconds. Disabled USB in power settings. Refreshed drivers. I found that if I held the cursor in the right spot I right could click on the items in the device manager and disable them. I could click on the unknown device and uninstall the driver. It instantly tried to reinstall itself so that was a fail. I did a system restore. I can turn off the warning but it still constantly beeps so I have to turn off sound too. I uninstalled the USB controller but then I could not get on the internet to download anything so thats when I did the restore again. Watched a lot of Youtube videos and tried things they said to do.
If I just put Puppy on it should I install Grub or can I use the original bootloader ?

Do you still want Windows 7 on it?If I just put Puppy on it should I install Grub or can I use the original bootloader ?
If yes.
Use Lick to do the Puppy install.

I need to decide. I may do a fresh install of Windows. I can get the CD for $20 or so. I only rarely need Windows. Updating my GPS for instance. I do know, I have waisted too much time on it. I can do a puppy install in 10 minutes.bigpup wrote:Do you still want Windows 7 on it?If I just put Puppy on it should I install Grub or can I use the original bootloader ?

You could update to Windows 10 for free.
I did it on a computer I have, that had Windows 7.
It kept messing up similar to yours.
This is basically how to do it for free.

Be careful on this web site and just follow the information.
Some of the adds have download buttons, that download what the add is about.
They are not part of how to update to Windows 10.

Big, do you like Windows 10 ? I do not have much experience with it. I am still not sure what to do. 10 may be a good idea, if it is still a free download. I heard somewhere they were going to stop that, If I dont like it I do not have to keep it.
This Dell is actually, my next computer. It will replace this old Acer I am using.

Do I like Windows 10.
Not as much as Puppy Linux!!!!!
Windows 10 does seem to handle problems better than Windows 7 and has better built in help for fixing anything that goes wrong.
Windows 10 does seem to be more stable than Windows 7.
I hate the menu, but it is what it is.
The free Windows 10 upgrade for Windows 7 was suppose to stop a few years ago.
However, the ability to do it is still on Windows servers.
They just do not tell you about it.
I really think they still would like to have everyone change over to Windows 10.
Think about it!
You put Windows 10 on a computer that was built just when Windows 7 started being used.
It will run OK, but will probably be some what slow.
WOW! I need to buy a new computer.
That new computer has Windows 10 and it was paid for by the computer maker! Win, Win, Microsoft!
Note:
My computer is about 10 years old, but has a Intel i7 2600 processor and a Geforce GTK 960 graphics card.
I see no speed difference between Windows 7 and 10.
As that web site I posted says:
So I choose to do the Upgrade this PC now.
This is all I had to do.
go to the Download Windows 10 webpage and click the Download tool now button.
That downloads the Media Creation Tool.
After the download completes, run the Media Creation Tool.
You can upgrade directly using this tool, or create separate media.
If you've downloaded the Media Creation Tool on the machine you plan to upgrade, and you plan to upgrade one and only one PC, you can choose the Upgrade this PC now option and be done with it.
Make sure you have at minimum 20GB of free space on the hard drive.
This does a lot of make a backup copy of old stuff, delete original, install Windows 10, and move the old stuff into it, by using the backup.

As that web site I posted says:
My Windows 7 computer still had a good working internet connection and file manager. The funny thing is, no one told the folks who run Microsoft's activation servers. Which means today, more than three years after the free upgrade offer supposedly ended, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and claim a free digital entitlement, without being forced to jump through any hoops.

I have done this several times. it takes a VERY LONG time to do, you are looking at about 20 hrs. (Why I use Puppy)
I am used to 10 now, and think it is better than 7
It does not seem to cause problems on older hardware - one of my laptops is a core 2

When 'blanking' a usb, use dd to overwrite the first 10MB or so with zeros. Be very careful though not to specify the wrong device.

I sort of like the idea of doing 10 just out of curiousity. Could be interesting. Couple questions. My download speed is 30 mbs, will it take 20 hours ? Do I need to be watching it download ? Nothing on the SSD that I want to save so can I do a complete wipe ? What about updates ? Thats is one thing I always hated about Windows. I used to hear a lot of complaining about 10 updating at inconvenient times.

Yes, your download will probably take a long time. A complete wipe would be perfectly fine, although the aforementioned article (https://www.howtogeek.com/266072/you-ca ... r-8.1-key/) tells you how to do an upgrade for free if you don't wipe Windows 7. You can set 10 to only install updates at a certain time or times.
My download speed was about 30mbs.
Windows 10 is about 3 to 4 GB in size.
It took me about 1 to 2 hours to do it all, but not all of that was downloading Windows 10.
Some of that time is checking hardware on computer, making backups of stuff you want to keep, and doing several reboots.
This way went all automatically, with little input by me.
I suggest having Windows 7 on the computer and do the Upgrade this PC now.
It turns Windows 7 install into Windows 10 and keeps any already installed added programs, settings, stored data, etc......
It will auto register using the old Windows 7 registration key.
But, you do have the option to download the complete Windows 10 and make a install media out of it.
Put it on a DVD or USB flash drive.
Install it from that.
It is about 4GB in size.
Will need the registration key from a legal Windows 7, 8, or 8.1
Windows 10 constantly having updates is just common to anything Windows.
You can do settings to control it and keep it from being automatic, but the updates do provide needed fixes to Windows.
It usually goes on in the background, when you first boot up.
So, you can still do other things.
Lately, does not seem to be much updating being done or does not seem to be very big changes or additions.

I hate it when we fix Windows!
Now use the Lick installer to install Puppy, so you never have to boot Windows again.
Makes a good duel boot setup.

Dirty job, but someone had to do it.
\ok so far but it will not replace the pup. Xenial 64 is my current favorite and I don't see anything from MS being better.
Guess I should look at the update situation and security next. Not looking forward to that. Never an issue with the puppy.
