looking for an updated 431 or similar
PUPPY LINUX IS NOT, IS NOT, A REPACKAGE OF OTHER DISTROS!!!I kind of lost interest when puppy started being a repackage of other distros,
All Linux OS's use the same core Linux files and programs.
Puppy Linux has to get them from someplace.
Those core programs and files have to be updated, bug fixed, improved, and stored someplace to be used to build a Linux OS.
The major Linux OS's (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Mint, Debian, Slackware, etc....) maintain repositories that keep up with the constant changes in these core Linux programs and files.
PUPPY LINUX HAS NO REPOSITORY THAT DOES THIS!!!!
Puppy simply uses one of the major Linux OS repositories to get the needed core Linux programs and files.
If Puppy Linux uses a repository for Ubuntu 1.0. There is also a good chance that software packages, compiled for Ubuntu 1.0, will also work in Puppy, because they are both using the same specific core Linux stuff and the same version of that stuff.
Most of Puppy Linux is VERY MUCH Puppy specific programs and code.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Well, I was around in the early days and BK was pretty clear that puppy was made from the kernel up, not from code salvaged from other distros, you can be offended by this if you want but at the time puppy was the perfect tool for salvaging an old win98/NT computer, that was the whole point of it in fact. Since the 4x line died off and gave way to the slackware/ubuntu lines it really doesn't feel that unique at all.
Thanks for kicking my account out of the forum tho, I'm sure you'll do it to this one too.
Good to see that the old contributors are treated so well, I think I will just move on and leave whats left of Puppy to the repackage brigade.

Indeed. Unique code.
Here is part of the history ...

The very first versions of Puppy used Redhat as the base compiler, kernel and program development system according to BarryK (from what I remember)
Barry though retired still maintains and develops the excellent and innovative EasyOS.
... meanwhile our intrepid smart dawgs (developers) combine Puppy coded utils (smaller, faster, just work code) with their interests and needs ...
For example I am quite interested in Puppi (running on ARM processor)

Others like to use ye olde hardware. Everybody has a fav ...

If you ever had anything to do with designing and producing software, you would know that pretty much every program written nowadays uses code and routines from elsewhere.
There is very little point in designing and writing fresh code for functions that have been around and tested for years.
I was a systems designer/coder for many years before I retired, and I probably only ever wrote a handful of functions from scratch and most of those would have been for brand new hardware.

I tried many of the 4.3 puppy versions. I have an old laptop with 160 ram, p2 with ssd drive though.
So far I really like 4.3 puppy with kde 3.5. It runs very smooth and It is hard to believe that its a 20+ old machine.
That was the only kde i seen so far on archive. Anyone ever make an updated 4.3 with kde? Is it possible to use a newer kde.
