Sound is muted every reboot. I can use either Retrovol or the Alsa Wizard and get the sound working but it's muted again on reboot. Tried in both JWM and Openbox.

ditto (I think I mentioned before and after the zzz pet)

When you get to the command line, and you enter 'xorgwizard' what screens do you see next?

Does xorgwizard finish and return to the command line?
Yes
playdayz wrote: And then you enter 'xwin'?
Yes.
playdayz wrote: After you enter xwin is when you see the black screen?
Yes.

So it seems you can run xorgwizard... what happens when you try the test? Can you try a different resolution/colur depth? Can you choose a different driver in the 'Choose' tab? What graphics chip? (I'm sure you probably said, just to save wading back through the thread).

Cheers
Intel 82830/i915 according to Hardware Info.

It had defaulted to i830 and I also tried the generic Intel.

Same issue exactly.

When I installed lupu5.1.1, on my Dell Desktop, the sound was muted. I ran the Alsa Wizard, which fixed the problem. When I rebooted, the problem did not return.
The installation of 5.2 (240, with zzz.pet) produces the same problem that I saw with 5.1.1. However, after fixing the problem, via the Alsa Wizard, the fix was only temporary. Upon reboot, the problem returned (sound was muted). What changed?

Death by diddywah. :)

Tried the .pet for sound. Installed, ran alsa config, rebooted a few
times, still no help.
On third reboot got a black screen with cursor, Had to use ctrl-alt
delete.
It dropped to an endless loop of "fatal error modprobe snd. blah blah...

Having a full install, I booted cd and ran an upgrade to restore things
to normal. (Deleted that ,pet from ppm of course)

Thanks for thinking of my attention training.
In JWM, Transmission is in both Internet and Network menus.
. . . thought you would sneak that one past me eh?

Regarding the zzz pet update:
Sound was no longer muted before I installed
and was persistent. Adding the zzz made no difference
(in other words sound working OK for me before and after - once I changed sound card outputs)

If it is of any interest
Ubuntu auto recognizes the first sound card choice (does not need to be configured)

Good news is I copied Ubuntu
from one partition into another and lost the mbr
Ran from menu/system/grub4Dos
and got Ubuntu running - hooray
(tried to find an Ubuntu solution but trust the
small dog to rescue the big . . .)

I will upload a new Luci 5.2 site here

That is one of my olde Puppy sites
and I mostly just updated links for 5.2 . . .

Thanks guys

Here's the rethemed freememapplet_tray that is in 2.14X, User clarf added right click functions for
-set time
-partview
-task manager
-exit

there are 2 pets depending on which task manager you use, one is for Pprocess that is puppy default and one is for lxtask which I made a pet earlier.

Please say if that is before or after installing the pet on p. 119. Here's the same link.
Before and after installing the zzz_scripts_simple_bk-201011_L3.pet : sound still 'muted by default'.
But I prefer 'muted by default' than 'maxi by default' :)

Still got muted sound after installing the .pet and several reboots.

The sound was very low for me too. Not the master volume that was set normal but Alsamixer was 00 on headphone and speaker so only line out was high.

I guess that a new beginner have no idea about finding also to change volume so maybe one should give them a tip on it.

First time I get boot error with this Luci240 with fresh pupsave.

240 had booted many many times the whole day Monday and then now Tuesday morning for the first time failed to boot. So I am back in Fluppy again which seems to never fail to boot.

Okay, Luci maybe is not for Acer Aspire One D250. Something odd about that machine?

sound still here on this old celeron since new zzz pet but tried a frugal of 240 on an amd athlon of dubious history/merit and sound was on (icon unmuted) on first boot. installed new zzz pet and rebooted to a muted icon. mute persists after several reboots.

ok...

On my radeon box in the shed, 3G modem...

At initial boot everything was fine, sound and all, connected with my Huawei e159 flawlessly.

Installed the 'zzz' (luci ver) and rebooted. The 3G was ok but sound was mute. Different result to quirky, so it may be kernel related, will try Insidious.

Cheers

hmmm... Insidious seems identical to quirky wirh needing to modprobe the 3G 'option' driver... but sound is ok.. weirdness and fun continues..

_____________________________________________________________________

later...

Just testing luci-240 on the ol' P3, 256 RAM.. can eject CD 8) ... sound is configurable only by alsawizard, which without zzz is muted anyway,, will install and see..

more later...

No good with the reconnection of wireless or the sound with zzz :( . I'll take a look tomorrow.

I have 237 installed on my lightningstruck Intel PC. Windows will freeze since a lightning destroyed the graphics card on the motherboard. The double core CPU and 1Gb RAM works OK. I found Puppy 5.1.1 on the net and installed it with the VESA driver. It worked just fine. Since then I have upgraded and now I am running Luci-237 with all the bells and whistles. Gimp, Skype, Firefox, Opera 11, Java_jre, Open Office loads as SFS. Network (ADSL) and sound is working fine.
I had the same setup in my laptop and it all worked well, until I decided to upgrade to Luci-240. I lost my wireless network connection and it refuses to load the Wine SFS. The tray icon for sound has a red cross on it, but sound works fine.
I was planning to upgrade my desktop as well, but decided to let it be as it is.
Why mend something that is not broken.
In spite of that I have to keep on running Windooze on my laptop I am very happy with Puppy. I have the infamous Atheros wireless in the laptop.
And a big thank you to you guys who have put so much effort in building such a tremendous Operating System.

as small and fast pdf viewers goes Evince by far blows away epdfview, epdfview doesn't use locales, well the .desktop doesn't include them :)
epdfview doesn't do slideshows, It doesn't display comics or impress documents. This version I had to highly hack to get it to work right, Usually you need gnome, python and tons of libs. So Its not as full featured as a fully bloated version, but on the other hand I made it small enough to replace efdview :)
To run it first delete epdfview usr/bin/epdfview because epdfview opens pdfs even if your using the menu in evince.

You only need the first package to run it, the others are language files, documents, and dev files
enjoy

I have a full installation of luci-240 on a 25GB partition, which is using less than 2GB. However, the partview icon on the desktop is showing only about 770MB available, and is giving a warning that I am running out of space. Attached is the partview report. The partition in question is sdb7.

Incidently, both my frugal and full installations have the same sound problem that has already been reported.

Also, as I was making this post. I got a message that there is insufficient space to copy to puppypin and the desktop froze. Had to do a Ctrl/Alt/Backspace to get to a prompt and restart.

Unusual problem for a full hd installation to run out of space. Apparently, there is some confusion as to available ram as opposed to available hd space.

Evince by far blows away epdfview
Very nice
about twice the size but very useful
- does it display Impress presentations? Is that right?
Works well for me, be interested how those on slower machines fare.
Epdfview is very slow at rendering on older hardware from what I remember.

Thanks Ttuuxxx - at least a pet if not a replacement?
Do you do databases too?
