If we can boot from the CD then I will just boot from Puppy
Do you know what that arrowhead is?
It a HP modern laptop but that's all i know at the minute.

I started there before I posted here and worked through about 10 different supposed sources and ended up finding a download of Ext2Fsd 0.68 and ran it on a windows XP install I have here ...It told me the USB stick was RAW and did I want to format it.


A lot of those seemed likely to be packaged with viruses and malware . Therefore the sensible option was to ask trusted advisors here who might know a safe source so I can fix my problem .I've dealt with you and chris before if you remember .


So that is what I am doing . I had already got Linux-Reader.exe ready to try but the other one suggested by Chris is one I will try also.(EDIT- I installed all 3 on win97 and none of them worked there. I'll have a go on windows 10 when I can)

If you are getting to something that offers an option to boot from CD or USB.

If computer has a UEFI bios.
What you are trying to boot does not have what is needed to boot in UEFI bios normally.

Boot into the computers UEFI bios settings screen.
Usually hitting F2 at the first initial screen you see.

Look for a setting to disable secure boot and or select legacy boot.

That should allow something other than Windows to boot.

Also, there should be a boot settings where you can change the boot device order.
Make the USB or CD the first boot device.
It should just go directly to that device first at boot.

Anything you change, you can change back, after using the CD or USB.

A Puppy version that has UEFI in the name, is suppose to boot without doing anything to bios settings.

Thanks Bigpup Ill go in and have another look at that. Saw UEFI and legacy boot mentioned but did not know what .UEFI meant. legacy boot is usually old hardware stuff and this is a fairly recent laptop.Ill try F2 also

I got to the BIOS with F10 and changed the boot order to put USB first and CD next then Windows but as I said above the small default arrow on the left of the entries did not move up so Ill check out what you have said and see what I can get later today.. I could not find a way to move the arrow up.

Ill also google UEFI now. Mm a bit to fathom there .Looks like first try will be the 'disable secure boot option.

Legacy boot was a fizzer as it is still controlled by UEFI. Looks like the only way to fix this is to disable secure boot by getting inside windows to hold shift down and click restart I think then troubleshoot and advanced options to get into UEFI settings. I'll edit this when I get it up .

So changing UEFI is the task now and it seems you do that from inside windows ! Christ Microsoft just keep getting worse and worse . Oh no we don't want you to run Linux on our laptop.How Dare You

Yes on reading it says some linux distros use a boot key for UEFI that is recommended only by Microsoft so their disks will boot with that key , Ubuntu was mentioned also. Puppy wont.

No I meant that Red Hat were involved in the decision making that forced EUFI. It was NOT just MS.

And I believe tha Red Ht will also supply the keys - though they may have deliberately sub contracted that responsibility to MS so that it sounds as though it was an MS stitch up - when it wasn't.

What a bugger of a system windows and Microsoft really are. Every way I went in UEFI led me back to the windows boot . Shift + Reset takes you to UEFI but that is just a ridiculous round robin whatever you do .

Decided to format the hard disk in EXT4 and install Puppy on it . HP seems to be cash in hand with Microsoft so Ill just have to break in and piss them off.

As I said in another post Red Hat LINUX were equally to blame not just MS

Gave it away earlier . They are trying to make it impossible to boot Linux on a windows system and with HP they seem to have succeeded so they can get stuffed . Don't like windows ,won't use windows and don't ever want to do so.

The top link is talking about machines without UEFI boot on them so that's no use .
The second would take me an hour to understand and even then I'll lay odds it won't work . Thanks though

Linux reader .exe in my tool case For test.
what use ? to listen my songs stored on DD partition ext3 with windows high quality and Dolby system. Puppy can access to songs stored HDD NTFS windows 7 partition.

I don't see why i should hate Windows as some people fond of Linux do. I use Puppy Linux because it's an OS very efficient. But audio by Windows if much better.
