Glad to hear it, I managed to trigger it because the upgrade (LiveCD boot) had put the .sfs files in the root directory of my hard drive, In Win98, I moved the luci_239.sfs to the Puppy directory where I keep the pupsave and then deleted the zl239332.sfs file because I didn't realise what it was for,

Once I encountered the problem I eventually thought of checking the CD and then saw what I was missing. The file should probably have a more descriptive name!

While the dialogue for copying the sfs files to hard drive says it will put them in the same location as the pupsave it actually doesn't - it just puts them on the root of the same drive.

if your compiling vlc make sure you enable root and also make as many as possible package statically . eg --disable-shared --enable-static
that way it will be much smaller, actually you can do the same with QT
then strip all the bin's and lib's

For my 2nd version of Luci-239 held on an internal HDD...
Just as well I manually copied both SFS files into the Luci folder that's in the root of a partition on my 2nd internal HDD.
And chose not to copy.
That too is working well...
Working within it to type this.
It works MUCH faster than when the files are on a Flash Drive.
However...
Pupsave on the Flash Drive has the advantage that it's possible to have the session not auto-save during the session...
And choose to not save the session at shut-down.

Lucid Puppy uses the Openbox window manager at initial start.
I go to menu>desktop>desktop settings and see all kinds of programs to make setting changes. Which ones to choose? A newbie babels to himself and freezes! ....

Yes... yes...as in we are all NEWBEESSSSSs in one way or another. Lots of folks have tricks and goodies they have collected or tried in order to make Puppy better for them. Yesterday there was a discussion on where to set preferences for Video. Older versions of Lucid had Spell check on in Abiword. is it possible to set up a screen or page or even a forum page of where the config files are for many of the "featured" programs. Or add to the Lucid News a section? Much of the information is scattered all over the long threads.


A personal preference: I am sure the final version will be brighter and more attractive to the user at first boot. Right now a gray screen is well....a bit putting off, till you dig around and learn that the desktop wall paper is easy to change.

I will get chastised for this, but as long as the wallpaper in this version is for testing only.... I am making that assumption.... can you put the VERSION Luci 239 in bold on the screen....Yes I know it is available..... How about even with the words test version... you know the old Draft water mark.

Keep up the good work.. it is getting cleaner and cleaner and leaner and leaner. I was weaned on one of those 8K machines.. wrote Payrolls and all kinds of goodies in FORTRAN no less. It was over fifty thousand dollars for 8 K of memory.

I'm certainly not a gifted compiler but I did compile xine-lib-1.1.19.tar.bz2
and xine-ui-0.99.6.tar.bz2 in luci 237 and when I went to run it I got:

If you compile them in wary 098 and make pets of them they work well

You can actually do that in a session running from hard drive too by loading the somewhat obscurely named Puppy Event Manager (in the System section of the Menu) and changing the value on the Save Session tab. Puppy is quite clever in that it knows what medium it's been used from and when it's running from Flash it turns saving off automatically.

Regarding retrovol; I like alsaplayer (in the menu). It is a part of alsa, and it works VERY well. - But I am sure some find retrovol prettier. Retrovol seems to has reached the stable stage. I am not the one to judge what should be in the menus or not........ Remember who's the boss

I know about run as root option I compiled few vlc versions but I failed on 1.1.5 on luci 239 error was something like ld can't find -lva-x11 I tried to google it but didn't find anything.

Anyway, since I loaded devx I'll try to compile new pidgin.

The simple way to use pmusic

Choose File > Open Song/playlist
and work your way to your folder full of songs
using Zigberts' file browser

Then click 'Add all'

If your playlist has non music files listed
then right click 'Remove from list'

Ah, but...
(a) With a pupsave on a Flash Drive:
I have the "Save interval" set to zero [0], and that does the business...
But...

(b) Here in Luci-239, with its lupusave on an internal HDD...
Although the value is still set to zero...[because I copied the Flash Drive pupsave to the HDD]
Note 2: says...
"PUPMODE=5 there are no saves, above value ignored."
So what pupmode is this?
Is pupmode 5 when there is no pupsave?
I believe that at the end of this session a displayed note will tell me "session already saved".

In his Arcade pup it is "in built" so that everytime at shutdown you have a chooice to, or, not to save session.

Wished all derivatives had this simple -but saving lot of irritation- option built in.

Running 239 from cd,

239 is kind of boring: no major problems , just a few questions and one rant ..

1. When running a new Luci version for the first time, I am greeted by the wonderful First Run Dialogue. I really love it. But for some reason I always manage to overlook the Numlock ticking thingie at the bottom of the box. No big problem, I can go to Menu>>Setup>>Personalize Settings and tick Numlock there. I wonder if this is caused by the fact that the first run box is so small. On my first run screen it looks like a timid attempt to tell me something. Of course, after I have set the resolution, it looks great and very readable.
Am I the only one having this little problem? Could be my eye-sight, but I do think the First Run Dialogue is so important, it could be made a little bigger to begin with.

2. Speaking of eye-sight: I installed the Ubuntu font pet, the fonts-improvements-for-puppy-five.pet, and I added Iguleder's "enable hinting" idea. But it still looks poor I'm afraid, compared to other distros. Again, this could be caused by my eyes, but I am beginning to doubt it.
When running a Chromium based browser (Chromium/ Chrome/ Iron) it looks like I have great results by adding "--enable-accelerated-compositing". I believe this is also available for the other browsers, but I didn't test it yet. After adding this parameter it seemed to me my monitor started a new life. But I am a poor judge in visual matters, so my question is: Are you guys happy with the fonts and general sharpness in Luci or what are your secret add-ons?

3. Mtpaint could be localized with the NLS.pet from PPM in 238. Now It can't. What happened?

4. Luci 239 runs okay, but my impression is, it is a wee bit less 'frisky' than its predecessors. Is anybody else experiencing this?

5. ttuuxxx proposed a great localization idea. I understand this would mean a major effort for the developers. Localizing Puppy as it is, is a complicated thing to do. But some sort of start is needed. People distro -hopping will all too soon leave Puppy, as there's no consistent internationalization. So one language =>> one language pack as a pet or sfs, isn't that something that is urgently needed?
[Puppy, lacking localization, has managed to get into the top-10 on Distrowatch. That in itself is remarkable and speaking volumes about the other Puppy qualities.]

6. The rant... Printing..made me come up with a new slogan; "Puppy Linux...Just about works" I've read every forum thread on printing, for YEARS, and believe me, I'm a patient guy, Moreover my HP-printer is one of the most common and most linux friendly models you'll find But enough is enough. Someone has to go to one of the major distros, hack out everything printing related and make a 120 MB SFS out of it. An OS should recognize and install a printer with just a few clicks. I am trying to hide my frustration, but this is one of the things that makes me angry and wanting to go back to my other distro of choice and never look back.

Starting here, I installed my HP Deskjet f4280 into Luci-238 in 15 mouse clicks. That's more than "a few", but it seemed pretty straight-forward. And I know for a fact that the Windows install of this unit is much more involved.

Moreover my HP-printer is one of the most common and most linux friendly models you'll find

Seems to me that Luci is the first Puppy I've used that is able to see:
(a) All 6 partitions on my [USB connected] Flash Drive...
sdc1 is often not displayed.
Plus...
(b) Both of the partitions on my 2 [USB connected] external HDD's.
Can usually see the 1st displayed, but not the 2nd to be powered-on.
Plus of course...
(c) The partitions on both internal HDD's.
All of these are normally displayed.

Mtpaint on Luci-239 does not support NLS. Next Luci-240 will probably have. (both from don)

BTW, i found a problem.
The Mtpaint NLS support works if you click the desktop icon.
But from the menu, it doesn't.
The menu turns to LAN=C after installing PET.
I am not clear what is the cause, but maybe we need to import the petget from LupQ...

Joe is here as 'joewing', but he is not here often. I have emailed him in the past and will do so again. One more issue with Jwm is that all minimised windows pop open when Jwm restarts, example, when installing a pet.
I think technosaurus made a patch for fullscreen issues, I'm not sure if our version includes said patch.

EDIT: I just checked, we have the older version of jwm-492. Latest revision is 493. I'll dig up the Quirky version which I'm sure has the patches applied. We should test this before I make an embarrassing email to Joe!
