Simple GTK Radio, huh? I tried that.....and in mine, at least, it wouldn't run. Unless your version is different, somehow.....

EDIT:- Ah, you're right. This is an earlier version. This is 0.1.5 - the version I have is 0.1.18. I'll see what happens when I boot into the 'Phoenix' a bit later on.

One last addition for the 'chroot environment' (or 'jail', if you like!), since I'm in danger of getting too far away from what running a 'retro' Puppy is really all about.

For anyone using the 'chroot' environment, and who wants a decent screen activity capture tool, the attached .pet will allow you to use the jail's built-in SimpleScreenRecorder.....in this case, this is SSR 0.3.3. (Just making use of what's already there.)

Recommended format is not MP4, in case you're wondering. It's actually MKV (you may know it better as 'Matroska')- a format natively supported by the majority of Linux media players, and one of the official, supported file formats accepted by YouTube.....because it supports just about every codec going.

Thanks for the new .pet Mike. Added Dogradio 006 comes with inbuilt yad later than the Puppy 4 one so if you wish to run this one - you will have to uninstall the Hotshots .pet and the Puppy 4 Yad. You will require Mplayer to run this - has conky in the .pet.

This is a fun thread. I've been enjoying reading it this evening. Puppy 4.31 was my last real favourite Pup - it still evokes nostalgic memories in my mind so great to hear it being experimented with like this. Interesting stuff.

Thanks Wiak I enjoy playing with it - it reminds me of the days when Pups weren't so Automated, and to see what stuff can run with it. To be honest I spend much more time booting up in to this Pup than the newer ones.

.....also works beautifully in the 'Phoenix'. I've been using it for years; it's my package tool of choice for .pet packages, and although it will also create SFS packages, I prefer doing those via 'mksquashfs' in the terminal (don't ask me why!)

What can I say? I like my GUIs.... A hangover from too many years with Windoze, methinks. Trio made a lovely job of this one, though, and it's particularly easy to use. It's another of those apps that just seems to 'work', no matter what Puppy you throw it at. I'm not surprised, though, because once again it's simply a bunch of scripts.....no binaries involved.

Comes with Mike's 'seal of approval'!

One thing I've found odd in the past few years, is the idea that seemed to be pushed forward that remasters were somehow inferior to a 'pristine' build. It seems to me that remasters are every bit as valid a technical means of producing a 'new' or different distro. A remaster can be scripted also, so the steps involved can be made perfectly reproducible. The fact is, most automated builds tend to have bugs and flaws that need ironed out, so remasters are at least as important a part of any distro build anyway.

Also, as you are showing with one of the best ever Pups produced, remastering can rejuvenate what some might have thought was obsolete. Plenty of old RAM-challenged hardware lying about gathering dust, when work such as described in this thread can make them often just as useful as the shiny new expensive machine in the high street shop.

chroot techniques you describe, are a great approach for getting unexpectedly good results, since they can, within limitations, provide the system with modern apps and required libs it wouldn't otherwise have by default, whilst still using an old kernel necessary for some old boxes to still work. Not everything can work with the old kernel of course, but, as you say, it is sometimes easy to upgrade kernel/modules to get round such issues.

I'm not going to say too much here - I'll let Darren speak for himself - except to say that I'm glad watchdog 'introduced' me to the whole business of the chroot environment. I've heard of them for a long time, but this is the first time I've seriously experimented with one, or really understood what it does.

I'd never want to use one too much with an old Pup (you end up losing sight of the whole point of doing so), but it's a neat way of adding an up-to-date browser.....which is always the one real weak point with an elderly OS.

And, as with so much other stuff I use, by running it 'remotely' a single chroot environment can be shared between multiple OSes. Puppy being so small, of course, you don't really need to spend a long time stripping out unnecessary stuff.....you simply use the entire Pup for the 'jail', as is.

This mornings offering is a .pet from Aragon Streamtuner found it worked nicely with deadbeef by changing default media player script as follows: deadbeef %q for
listen to .m3u and streaming option. Listening to xiph options - different stations - Nice!

Lets Break your question down - the only "security" related updates for I know of for 4.31 over recent years was when Watchdog issued a bash update which was needed at the time and one you must be careful of because doing it wrong from memory breaks wget which I think affects PPM.

The updates I did here were allow 4.31 to run later software.

For your question which do I prefer between 4.31 and Wary 5.5 for a Pentium 3 - I personally prefer 4.31 but that to be honest is a personal opinion and on that machine probably 4.31 would have the edge.

To run those sfs - you need to install sfsload.

Glad to hear XVidCap 1.1.7 is working for you. I'm having to go with the previous release, 1.1.6, 'cos all 1.1.7 will do for me is throw segfaults....

*shrug*.....grrrr.......

(Which is bloody annoying, 'cos it works fine in every other Pup in the kennels. Unless there were some major changes from the 4-series Pups to the 5-series?)

Well, to the best of my knowledge, segfaults occur when two or more applications are trying to use the same memory location at the same time. Rather than try to uninstall stuff one at a time and test like that, I reckon the best thing to do would be to try with a 'pristine' Phoenix, and just install XVidCap 1.1.7 by itself, see what happens, like.

I'll remove the save-file from the mix, and put it somewhere safe. Do you have an 'uprated' Phoenix ISO since this project started?

Re; the 'can't find SFS' thingy in Wary. This was an acknowledged problem with older Pups; there's been tons of posts over the years regarding this very issue. AFAIK it's been fixed with more recent ones; code has been added to allow the system more time between writing the initrd.gz to RAM, and actually loading the Puppy files into the newly-created 'virtual file-system', in order to actually find them.

I'm still not certain as there was ever a real 'fix, or 'workaround' developed for this problem, but I'm of the opinion that it could very well be related to the read/write speeds of individual flash-drives, too.
