Exactly. Black screen, no text no crash no nothin'. I wish I could be a little more helpful but I can't. I don't get error messages or anything. One of three things happens upon tinkering...
(1) The screen goes black and the little power/status light on the screen goes from green to amber, as it does initially (CTRL+ALT+BKSP gets me out of blackscreen and into CLI mode successfully).
(2) Starts X and then X crashes and dumps me back at a terminal.
(3) Xorgwizard crashes at the test point and won't let me do anything but shut down.
Screen is a Dell e177fp, if that's any help. I might try it with an HP vs17c I have lying around... both are 1280*1024 screens.
I'm pretty sure the issue is that Xorg is trying to force 24 bit color. The VX855 chipset can go all the way to 18bit but that's as far as it goes... I've been trying to force 16 bit but it hasn't worked yet
even tinkering with /etc/xorg.conf in mp doesn't seem to work. (Thank you, BTW, for including mp -- I cannot *stand* vi/emacs, they throw me for a loop entirely. mp has a structure more like MSDOS Edit, which is far friendlier
)
I can report that *ClassicPup's* XVesa mode works, but I don't know how to bring up XVesa in TahrPup. I know that
xvesa [ENTER] is
not how to do it...

Editing xorg.conf manually to 800x600 (as a test case) and ensuring that the color depth everywhere is 16bit, has no success.
Forcing the modesetting or vesa drivers produces a black screen, CTRL+ALT+BKSP freezes system at that point (unresponsive blinking cursor of doom, must shut down with power button). IIRC openchrome driver does the same.
Haven't tried using lspci and then manually specifying the BusID of Card0 for the driver yet... that's next, I think.
EDIT: BusID is 0:1:0 but it looks like forcing /any/ driver corks Puppy
Ideas, anyone?
EDIT2: not the monitor either; as much as I like to ding Dell I can't here. HP vs17c has same results.

PM'd micko, he suggested that rather than untangling xorgwizard, I try installing to an internal drive.
This is a thin client the size of a trade paperback. It has a header for a notebook hard drive, that normally holds a DiskOnModule (
like this) of one gigabyte size.
So I pulled that little sucker and stuck in a cable and an IDE notebook HDD. Wouldn't spin up -- not the drive's fault, the system actually can't supply enough juice (about 5w for spinup, just for a second) to the drive's motor!
Next try was a
Hitachi MicroDrive. Four gigs. Had to pull the board out of the case to get the adapter to fit, lol. That wouldn't spin up either! Pathetic... it only takes about 2w to get those going... 3w if it's a 5v drive instead of 3.3v.
Last shot was a 512mb PQI CompactFlash card. Same adapter. Booted fine, blackscreened me rather than giving me a desktop. Oh well.
I've invented enough swear words for one day, so I'm giving up for now.

Hmmm... looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it's not seeing that there's a display there.

That log is from a boot yesterday, no savefile was used or created.
I may be able to re-engineer it tho.
Trying the swapped kernel now... hang on...
EDIT: kernel swap didn't work. Will make a 2nd post in a minute with xorg.conf...

could you boot again and grab /tmp/xerrs.log and /var/log/messages
copying them to root might be easiest ....then grab them from the savefile with a working pup
cp /tmp/xerrs.log /root
cp /var/log/messages /root
you might want to PM them to me in case they have ip address etc

BUG REPORT
On that same troublesome hardware, booting with
pfix=nox/b] causes an odd issue.
Note that I'm booting without a savefile here...
It runs through the usual init stuff, gets to asking me for a keyboard selection. I press [ENTER] to indicate a standard US keymap -- and it hangs with a blinking cursor. At this point, if I put my hand on the CPU heatsink, it's really really hot -- the CPU is caught in an endless loop.

No, no, no, and no, in that order
I replaced the original thermal material (silicone pads, ugh) with a silver based paste (no, not Arctic Silver 5, something far cheaper and eBayish... but it's far better than the copper stuff!).
Heatsink is bent perforated copper sheet. No fan. Laughable, but it only has to dissipate seven watts (!) so it's okay.
I'm running it without the lid on the case anyways.

I was trying to upgrade the kernel in 6.0.3 CE.
I thought I would try out the 4.0.something kernel. I got the file downloaded and extracted the contents. I know that I need to put the two files I got somewhere on the USB drive that I am booting/running from but...
Do I just drag and drop and replace files as prompted to do so?

Check your email first.
The unpacked upgraded kernel consists of two files: vmlinuz and zdrv_tahr_6.0.sfs. You substitute them for the current files of similar names. Although you may have done the upgrade to 6.03, I think your zdrv,,,.sfs still bares the name zdrv_tahr_6.0,2.sfs.
I suggest that you create a folder, perhaps named "old kernel" and move your current zdrv_xxx.sfs and vmlinuz into it --just in case. Then move the new zdrv_xxx.sfs and vmlinuz to the same location as initrd. Rename zdrv_tahr_6.0.sfs to zdrv_tahr_6.0,2.sfs or whatever your old zdrv was named.
