Puppies 4.3.1 uses a *very old* version of Xorg (v7.0 from 2005) (LOL)

So you might need pets from here:

xorg_DRI_MODULES-7.0.pet
xorg_OPENGL-7.0.pet
This should enable DRI and 3D support for the r200 chips.

ttuuxxx, i've haven't ever mentioned this b/c it doesn't bother too much but so you know I have to use xvesa b/c xorg freezes up for me in FF. it did so in 2.14x also. like i mentioned i don't mind using xvesa but if you want me to run any tests for anything to see why my computer always freezes up in xorg in your versions just let me know.

I've been watching this topic for a little while, and I must say I am VERY impressed with the direction the puppy 4.3 series are going. Especially ttuuxxx's 431 puplet. I hope I can try to make my PowerPup project based on the structure of puppy 431.

I haven't actually tried the puplet yet. (I was waiting for 4.31.1)

I'll let you how much I like it after I test it.

Need some help here please. For the first time ever, I cant run Xorg on this Puppy, so need to run Xvesa. Thats OK, but am having just the worst time with the touchpad. I would normally configure this via Xorg.conf, but I guess Xvesa is different, SO, where do I find a mouse config file, if any please?

Schism,

until the CPU freq.tool is fixed paste this in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:

modprobe powernow-k8
modprobe cpufreq_ondemand
echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
#cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/stats/time_in_state

the last line is so you can verify that it works. Paste it in the console [without #] and check that it works correctly. It doesn't need to be in rc.local, it's there for convenience in case you forget it so you can always copy it back.

2005 wasn't all that long ago, most computers that use puppy are from that era, and another fact that older X-Server has 6MB extra modules thats allows newer PC like mine do circles around the latest one in series 4, If I knew which modules were added to 2.14R I might take a stab compiling them for the current model. Never the less my pc is less than 2yrs old and probably has more memory in the graphic card than most users of puppy have in there whole pc, and that retro X-server does do a better job for my pc, a great noticeable increase of speed with FF3.5, but anyways since people would rather complain and laugh, I rebuilt 4.31.1 with the original slower/smaller current X-server so now you have choice and can't complain.
Now I'm going back to 2.20 Retro Puppy

For example,the old Xorg doesn't support 3DNow! / SSE optimizations,has only a fraction of the OpenGL features for these OLD cards and has broken page flipping.

ttuuxxx,are you using an NVIDIA videocard?
Because I don't experience slow scrolling in Firefox with Barry's original 4.3 release (using Firefox 3.7alpha)

Yes I'm using a NVIDIA video card about 1yr old.

Maybe try the newer one I just posted at page 1, since X-server should be 100% the sames as Barry's 4.30 release.

Interesting point: I re-mastered and now the zpblahblah.sfs file does not seem to be needed. Previously I needed it for my network driver. Presumably, re-mastering picks up the driver(s)
Xvesa gives a very pretty interface, fonts especially being nice, and it re-draws very fast, but this touchpad will drive me nuts. Will try the later version.

Hi ttuuxxx, appreciate your great work, but this drives me crazy on 4.3.1.1:

The internet connection is not saved for the next boot. Is there a file where one can manually do just that?

My set up:
Puppy 4.3.1.1 on Full HDD
JWM (and ICEwm)
Internet by Network (DSL; DHCP)

This problem does not exist in 421 Full HDD, 421 Frugal HDD and Muppy 008.4 Frugal HDD.

Any ideas?

hmm page flipping works fine here and definately get faster performance from xorg 7.0.

mikeb: are you sure?

Here's how to test if it works or not: Enable pageflipping in xorg.conf , restart X , run glxgears from the terminal and write down the score (the average FPS from 5 runs,ignore the first result)
Quit glxgears and close the terminal window. Now run glxgears again. The fps will be much lower. (e.g. 2160fps -> 1490fps)

If page flipping is working correctly the FPS will stay the same (or change only slightly) during the second run.

Enable page flipping for 3D acceleration. This will increase performance but not work correctly in some rare cases, hence the default is off.

There is mention of it being disabled in the later xorg's for some drivers...perhaps that is what you are experiencing

Yes,enabling the page flipping works and does increase the fps (i.e. 1490fps -> 2160fps), but there is a BUG with the page flipping code (it's broken). Whenever you start a 3D app, glxgears,a WINE session or even Opera, the page flipping gets disabled automatically (i.e. fps drops from 2160 -> 1490) and it remains like that forever until you restart X.

I downloaded your new puppies4.31.1 with the newer X-server and it now works with my widescreen monitor at 1440x900x24.
Firefox 3.53 is great, streamtuner too..
