Calling All PuppyLinux Artists !
Calling All PuppyLinux Artists !
Hello all.
As the title says.
This is a call for a background for a "never-seen-before" Puppy.
The concept is this:
Our poor Puppy has been suffering for the last 15 years from all sorts of
transformations, woofing-CE, trimming, fattening, remastering of all sorts.
He or she (do we really know?) has been forced to live in the company of
strangers: Ubuntus, T2s, Debians, even Archs and what-have-you for
awhile.
And now Core's and Slitaz's? Wheeee!
Following up on sort-of-a-request by a fellow member, I am working on a
minimal Puppy, but not a to-the-bone Puppy. The default WM will be
snapwm (yan-han-han; see attached). There will be almost no music
player, almost no editor, etc.,just enough to give you doggone Puppyists
(from the point of view of our poor abused Puppy) a lot of trouble
rebuilding a Puppy to your liking. Enough said.
When I was a kid, I had a dog who had a skinny -- and strong -- tail. When
she was happy she would wag her tail, of course, and anything in the way
would be swept away or broken. E.g. mom's coffee, dad's Ginger Ale, my
lemonade...
Her dad was a rather big-sized bulldog, and her mom was a mix of a
sausage dog (dachund) and a greyhound (short legs and long nose...).
"Noirette", the result, was a regular-sized dog, who could outrun a car at
30 mph without panting, kill a rat by snapping its neck, howl without end at
crows landing in the yard in the Spring, ferociously dig out the neighbor's
lilac tree, and when her day was done, devour the meal in her bowl, roll
up and sleep like a baby on her favorite cushion.
Was it predestination , she was dressed a bit like Tux: all black, except
for a white ascot, and white "shoes and gloves".
So the concept of the background would be to convey some kind of
revenge:"look what you made me do, you doggone Puppyists", not to the
point of biting and rabies, however, but with a malicious chuckle and a
wink in her eye.
Not sure about the title: Chuckle Puppy? Revenge Puppy? Surely this group
has language buffs who can suggest a concept between "laughing at you"
and "getting back at you"?
So I declare this picture contest now officially open: the likes of futwerk
and nilsonmorales, anyone with graphic talent: welcome!
Please post your masterpieces below.
The winner will get no cash prize, I'm afraid. (Exception would be if I win
the Lotto!) Only "eternal" recognition and credit. Plus the exposure, the
Oooh's and the Aaaah's on this thread!!!

Hi Sailor,
Not quite! Her ears were higher on her head and falling in "V" fashion. Her
white ascot was larger, too.
Her mom was a mix of daschund and greyhound, not her. She had a regular
head and jaw. Standing on all fours, she was as high as my knee. She had
somewhat of the rib cage and of the cheeks of her dad. (A bit like our
Canadian Prime Minister Diefenbaker! [ in the 1960's])
She looked neat and clever, not stupid like the mutt in your photo!
Bye.

I look forward to this new Pup Musher just like the good old days of one bone and the like.

You're not doing too bad yourself in that department with your "bare" racy-5.5 & Co.!

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

It is possible to make an operating system with no default wallpaper
to save space. I proved this concept. All that is required is mtpaint
and software that will make /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg
the background when X is launched.
Read HERE
I am still using this script in fatdogarm.

@don570: Thanks, I'll have a look at your script.
Later in the day:
I did try it, but I can't say I'm crazy about it. Obviously I don't master the
parameters, but the mtpaint "formula" is awfully fussy about the format of
fonts. It won't accept the beautiful AkizaSans font, for example, which
seems pretty standard to me. Also, can we have non-neon colors?
Maybe someone with good command of the parms can produce something
nice with it? As for me, I'll pass. (But thanks for mentioning it.)

We'll try to make it a T-Bone!
Besides, how many years, now, since the last published "Bone"?

Thanks for your input. You're the 2nd person to mention this kind of
possibility. I'll see. I'm starting slow -- but sure, hopefully.

Another Bone....
Hi Musher0,
I have some suggestions too.
If you create a barebones puppy, this is typically done by removing all the bloat, and everything needed to support the bloat.
Browser out, Office out (Abiword...).
The remainder is typically stripped so far it is not usefull for anything, except booting and terminal work.
And the user interface is typically UGLY as hell (I know taste is personal) so save few kbyte.
If I may make a suggestion it is to create a barebones with a goal.
Not to bare it down to the minimum, but the minimum for XXXX function.
You could think of a barebone with only a browser (I think there was one "browserlinux" based on lupu 5.1.1). Pick the simplest HTML5 browser, drop flash.
Or a barebone targetted to network use (with network tools, and RDP, VNC and such).
Or a barebone targetted at video playing (mediacentre barebone).
And make it beautifull and user friendly.
Or a barebone for programming (python ?)
Or a barebone for WINE / DOSBOX
Or a barebone for STEAM
Or a barebone for MINECRAFT....
Reason is that a fully stripped barebone grows to the size of a full size puppy once you start giving it more function. All the drivers, libraries, etc... have to be added before you can do anything with it. And then you did a lot of work resulting in a lot of work for the others to add it again.
I realize that when using Xslacko Slim, a very good job done by mistfire, but a slimmed down version has things missing. It is hard to make a barebone that can be used universal.
That is my 5 cent.....

hi again musher0
doesn't woof-ce have a package list
where what is not needed in the original stripped down iso
can be checked off
then another list can be made that has more stuff
the next level so to speak
and another list with a higher or differently focused level
etc
you would just have to go through and check off the lists
a lot of work
and you would have to know what you are doing
but then it would use the the work of woof-ce
and make woof-ce accessible to simple folk like me
i would be a tester
if it didnt take long to build each iso

Hi wanderer.
Woof-CE does have a flat-file csv-type database of progs and libs to install. I think I
understand the concept -- BarryK did explain it well. However, in practice, when I
have it loaded in front of me in say, gnumeric, I can't make heads or tails of it.
Also, it would still take over an hour to do each try-out through the Woof-CE process.
Our buddy Sailor Enceladus is very good at juggling with this database, as I
understand it. Me, I prefer working with the good old < rm > utility in a loop based
on the ~/.packages/builtIn "index cards". Cut, snip and carve, I guess, is my method!
Nearing completion, BTW. Where's that background of a Revenge Puppy, folks?
