Which 3G/4G broadband 'dongles' work with Puppy?

Afternoon, everybody.

I can't help wondering if it might not be an idea to have a separate section (or even just their own thread) for wireless broadband 3G/4G dongles, in order to let folks know which makes/models will work with Puppy, and perhaps brief details of which Puppies, and the steps needed to get them up-and-running?

I'm sure I can't be the only one who uses them on occasion. I see many references to them at times in the Forum.

What are other folk's thoughts on this one?

I don't really know. Possibly, for the majority of 'normal' dongles. yes. However, I've recently started using a type which is new to me. New, in that although it's definitely a wireless dongle, Puppy doesn't see it that way. Puppy appears to see it as a wired, ethernet router.

So I don't know if this adheres to the normal method of operation, as covered by USB modeswitch..... I have an open mind on this one. The dongle in question is a ZTE MF710M.

My previous dongle was a Huawei K3565, which was definitely seen, and connected by, PGPRS. But it doesn't even see the new one.....much less want anything to do with it. It can't find /dev/ttyUSB0.....

The D-Link DWA-130 Version 5.3 worked for me. Hover it died on me a few days ago, I think that you would get better life out of a router or switch. Here are some routers I'm thinking of getting:

I've given up on the ZTE; it won't stay connected for more than 2 minutes at a time. I've now gone for a mobile wifi 'hotspot':-

I think these things will gradually replace dongles; they're certainly a hell of a lot easier to configure and get running......and the only setting-up Puppy requires is a wifi connection. As Alexander would say, 'Simples..!'

I just bought the D-Link Dual band N600. (grrr...I paid twice what it is going for on Amazon).

The default drive doesn't seem to be working.

I'm following instructions here:

**note both devx and kernal sources must be loaded.

downloading the modified driver:

I got an error

I found a quick fix for this error:

                              @MRNGSTAR  Hello there, if you want a quick fix on the compilation and since I can  see you're using a kernel > 3.0 well the fix would be to do the  following: 
Comment out the lines 1137,1138,1139   in rt3573sta/os/linux/rt_linux.c

        pOSFSInfo->fsuid = current->fsuid;
        pOSFSInfo->fsgid = current->fsgid;

I only had to do this in the line of code noted by the above error at:
/root/Downloads/DPO_RT5572_LinuxSTA_2.6.0.1_20120629/os/linux/rt_linux.c

line 1206 column 20.

After commenting out those lines in compiled.

Now I will let you guys know if it works.

It worked

There was one final step (I did this on tahrpup 6.02).

In the menu under setup go to "Internet connection wizard"
**Note the connect button on the desktop may not work because it doesn't let you chose the wizard.

Select "Wired or wireless Lan"

Select the last Option "Puppy Network Wizard"

Select Load module.

type in:
rt5572sta

**Note for some reason when it loads it comes up as "usb: Ralink 11n Adapter"

Hit enter.

Then Under Wlan, scan, select your connection, put use wep2, put in your password, save, select use this profile, then connect using "auto dhcp".
