Is there any odb software for Puppy? Solved thanks

#1 Post by number77 »

Hello
I am having problems with the engine management of my vw van so bought an elm327 scan tool that will read the odb error codes from the van. Has anyone got one of these going on any version of puppy, I can load most puppies to my dell vostro 1320 2.2gb, dual core, 2gb laptop.
PS it hasnt arrived yet.
Thanks

My experience with one for Audi is that I had to buy the cable from Hong Kong and it came with a software disk that loaded a program onto windows machines (vag-com) and with that I could enter my cars computer and do all the stuff I wanted to do , see error codes , delete them and do calibrations etc. $12

On my Holden Commodore it needed a different cable and program which I did not find a cheap replacement for . Also there were different cables for different models and it was quite confusing because you had to get the right one. I did not buy the expensive one . $30-$50

My local auto mechanic seems to be good enough to put the Commodore on his hand held machine and check and clear codes for free ,telling me what I need to do ,hoping for the work ,which he does not get ,so he will twig soon .

I have not seen any Linux versions at this point but if you are familiar with Arduino there is a whole sector of arduino.cc forum working on such programming and it can definitely be done that way and the code for the arduino is plentiful and freely available .

I have seen this one before thanks Vag-com run under wine is a windows program and does not like wine . Read down and he does not get any good result from it in Linux. Been there done that.

Lot of options here but again I have not found one that works properly for me

https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:ELM327_based_ODB2_scan_tool
OBD-II program

Though the scan tool will make it possible to interface with the car's on-board computer (also know as ECU or Engine Control Unit), but in addition to this a specialized program is needed to interrogate it.

There seem to be numerous options on Windows but the choice on Linux is more limited. I've tried pyobd, which - after some tweaking on the initialization routine - was able to take a reading of the ECU.
This is the type of stuff you have to plough through and I hav'nt found it worthwhile yet . Puppy does not have BlueZ and the bluetooth devices being sold have very bad reputations . Wanna waste your money ? Go right ahead with bluetooth .

No as above Vagg-com for Audi and perhaps VW I can recommend but on windows and if I could find one for a Kingswood I would shoot the Kingswood first . The 2001 Commodore has a body that never rusts ! End of that story

I use this setup for my android:

http://www.amazon.com/OxGord%C2%AE-Blue ... B00W31VMYC

And ...

http://download.cnet.com/Torque-for-And ... 35711.html

It works great! I dash mount my android while driving, so this lets me monitor engine performance while driving.

(I can't dash-mount Puppy)

???

Whats a bubble-post?
Is that something like a wumble in the woods.

So what type of car do you attach it to and is there a list of cars it will definitely work on?
I see you are in Kentucky so do you know if it is USA model specific . Does it work on GM Ford and Jeep for instance.

number77 -Please note Vagg-com is for Audi and other cars they produce only . It does not work on Ford , GM , Jeep , MG etc. as far as I am aware
