No problem, truthfully I didn't even know there was a problem, it looked to me like the card had connected with a few issues, but connected nonetheless. See how rebooting goes, and if not, I'll look in to it.

@yerc1

I may not need that DOTconfig file after all. I realized the zdrv got mixed with some of Tahr kernel files I was playing around with earlier. Try chucking this into a terminal to delete mfd-core.ko, cros_ec.ko, and cros_ec_i2c.ko :

Code: Select all

rm /lib/modules/3.18.1/kernel/drivers/mfd/mfd-core.ko
rm /lib/modules/3.18.1/kernel/drivers/mfd/cros_ec.ko
rm /lib/modules/3.18.1/kernel/drivers/mfd/cros_ec_i2c.ko
You'll need a save file to see the effects unless you manually edit zdrv. Worse come to worse if you're unable to do either I'll send you the edited zdrv.

EDIT: Ahh hang it. Here, I'll save you the trouble. Try this zdrv instead of the current one. I've uploaded to the same place as the old zdrv just to confuse you. Just hope I haven't confused myself...

They aren't needed because when I compiled them, I compiled them as builtin, where as Tahr has them as modules. Ideally, I find it easier to troubleshoot with modules but it seems a waste to recompile the kernel just for that, so we'll just try this for now and if it works I'll recompile for the ISO. I need to switch of I2C debugging anyway. All those I2C messages are cluttering...

I did a new frugal install to an ext3 partition it took 2 reboots but I can confirm Broadcom wireless working perfectly

battleshooter if you need a new detailed report I can gladly give it but I am not posting from that pc at this time

Looking all good here ! Thank you ! Thank you !! 8) 8)

Could give that a go if you'd like while waiting for me to go through the reports. I think then they either edit /usr/X11R7/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf or add 10-synaptics.conf to the same location with the configuration desired.
Attached is what I have used in older Carolinas. It is located at:

Code: Select all

usr/X11R7/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

where the X11 is a symlink to usr/X11R7/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d.

Edit: I think the links are there in vlina but I get dizzy following them so I'll stop. I assume X is responsible for this scattergun of stuff :?:
Thanks battleshooter and Marv.
I'll try this method when I'm back on the chromebook.
This method re-created the x.org.conf file with synaptics entries in two areas (can't remember and I'm posting from my mobile phone... on my way to work). The entries were commented out so I removed the preceding '#' before each entry then reboot but X failed. Commenting out the entries and a reboot made X work again. I didn't play around enough but whatever change there was also killed the touchpad.

I saw the new zdrv and will try that tonight

Quite a carousel isn't it. For what it it's worth, the relevant files Tahr-based pups use in xorg.conf.d are attached for comparison.

hi battleshooter

I can confirm that you're not easily confused :-)

The new zdrv does not bring touchpad right-click and scroll options or the ability to configure the touchpad.
synclient continues to give its synaptics driver not loaded message.

I thought to check what kernel modules are available for loading in BootManager. In there are synaptics_usb, synaptics_i2c_rmi4, and synaptics_i2c but no plain synaptics. Only the third seems relevant but I loaded all three anyways then did a reboot.
Checked touchpad again and ... nope.

What I observed is that, after some reboots, I had to run modprobe chromeos_laptop command to re-enable the touchpad.

Introducing the second release of Carolina: Vanguard Edition!

Image

What's New:
XORG update! Mesa update! Kernel update! Alsa update!

Xorg update - Huge update from Xorg 1.11.0 to 1.16.2
Mesa update - Uses fancy new gallium drivers as well as now providing out of the box hardware acceleration!
Kernel update - Small step up to 3.18.1 but now compiled with all kinds of new drivers updates from joystick/gamepad vibration to thermal sensors, KVM drivers and everything between
Alsa update - Frankly I don't see a difference but if it does something for you...

Plus a hoard of general fixes including:

Intel compiling fixed (Thanks Billtoo)
Skype and Master PDF Editor fixed (Thanks Geoff)
Shutdown issue fixed (Thanks elroy)

Darn! We've broken the 500MB limit. It's all XORG's fault if you're wondering. Jumped from 53MB to 176 MB.

Oh and if you're missing the previous theme, it's now available in the XFCE theme manager. The clock and the notifications need to be set manually though, the themer doesn't cover those.

Quick test !
It didn't boot right on the desktop , I used xorgwizard to get here . Posting from vlina R2 . It's impressing I have already sound through HDMI and Grandr change monitor resolution makes easily passing to all the resolution AMD driver offers on this machine . Even SMPlayer can use the video option gl(fast)-Ati (cards) .

Keep testing ... Next week I'' get the NVIDIA card.
Very nice job @battleshooter :!: :D

Delta is now up.

Thanks Gobbi! Glad to hear the HDMI sound is working, that ought to save you the trouble of installing the propriety driver. I've lately been discovering the powers of the native Radeon driver, it's very nice on my setup and test beds, kind of wondering why I always went through the hassle of the propriety.

Not sure why it didn't boot straight to desktop though I'm pleased xorgwizard resolved it, what's the graphics card?

It's an Sapphire Radeon HD 7870XT (Tahiti). I know it's a bit problematic... But the proprietary driver solves any issue with it. I've seen this in vlina R1 .
The image quality while SMPlayer played a video with 50 fps was not optimal in R2 , but it's a big step forward anyway .
A big +1 in vlina R2 it is the fact that even the Audio Mixer shows the sound from the video card without the proprietary driver . Untill now , on different new pups , sound was working through HDMI only choosing the device from the video player ( VLC or SMPlayer ).

That's a pity. I was kinda hoping I'd get away with no one needing the propriety drivers as I had trouble getting the AMD one going after compiling. That and I never got around to investigation Billtoo's nVidia propriety bug.

I tried to install the proprietary AMD driver (amd_14.12) . It was very tricky to make the vesa driver to work , even putting in the kernel line radeon.modules=0 pfix=vesa ... Always didn't booted stright to the desktop and then with xorgwizard command on the prompt , it falled back to the radeon driver . I had to edit some xorg.conf files to make it run on vesa . The AMD driver installed with errors... When I exited to prompt to do aticonfig --initial it didn't work .
I attach the install log .

Let me call this 3 for 3 here in intel land :!: Forcepae works. Same intel setup errors as previously seen on the 855GM but video resolution, sound, and WPA2 connection with Frisbee are all good. Intel driver and direct rendering using the intel MESA driver are reported in Hardinfo with very good acceleration and FPS scores for this class laptop. Full sys-info attached for completeness only. Basically this was a smooth OOTB experience on all the machines I have. CPU use at idle and subjective speed are great on all 3. Both ALPS and synaptics touchpads are usable with no fiddling except to turn off the tap-to-click.

Thanks,
