How did you get it onto sda3?
If yo got puppy to create it there, then it should have written a text file called 'SAVEMARK', containing the single character '3', in your installation directory on sda1.

sda1
From 'Edit Item:'
/root/.pup_event/drive_sda1
drive ext4

From dmesg ends:

ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [ALKC] BIOS reported IRQ 0, using IRQ 22
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [ALKC] enabled at IRQ 22

sdb1
From 'Edit Item:'
/root/.pup_event/drive_sdb1
drive ext3

From dmesg ends as above.

Thanks for taking an interest Gyro. I'm currently setting up a workaround by mounting drives into directories under /root. Not ideal but has some advantages when FTPing from elsewhere.

Hi everyone,

thanks a lot for your answers, I will try to reply to everyone :-)

bigpup

I am booting Ubuntu and Puppy Tahr from the same partition (now I am boot on Ubuntu), using Grub2.

I can choose between booting ubuntu or puppy without any problem.

here's my boot loader entry:

Code: Select all

menuentry "Puppy Tahr(pfix=ram)" {
set root='(hd0,1)'
linux /tahr6.0frugal/vmlinuz pfix=ram
initrd /tahr6.0frugal/initrd.gz
}
I have Puppy installed on sda1:

Code: Select all

joao@present:/tahr6.0frugal$ pwd
/tahr6.0frugal
joao@present:/tahr6.0frugal$ ll
total 202656
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 nov 23 21:37 ./
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4096 nov 23 15:41 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 nov 23 15:41 ATAHD
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1304003 nov 23 17:46 initrd.gz
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 170680352 nov 23 15:41 puppy_tahr_6.0.sfs*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1 nov 23 21:37 SAVEMARK
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4698528 nov 23 16:46 vmlinuz
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30801920 nov 23 15:41 zdrv_tahr_6.0.sfs*
joao@present:/tahr6.0frugal$
my save folder is in sda3:

Code: Select all

/tahr6.0frugal/tahrsave-joaotahr/
gyro,

yes it has!

musher0,

I didn't have time to go deep into you answer, I am not skilled enough to explore your concepts rapidly. :-)

--

well I did some trials.. I have placed the puppy boot files on sda3 inside /tahr.. exactly where is the save folder. But without success,
I have also transferred the save folder to the same folder of puppy boot files on sda1 also without success..

may be I should start all over, setting everything to run from sda3, and create a new save file.

I will give a try tomorrow,
sorry for not giving you a complete answer today,

cheers and thanks a lot to the community!

p.s. - is there a way to load the save files after booting?

Wow! I had no idea.. I found this boot configuration somewhere on internet.. and I went through to it.. without further reading.. my fault.. This is the result of trying to install something in those 5 minutes I have in between all the other things..

Thanks very much for your answer!

Then I've never seen your situation before.
Usually, clicking a desktop drive icon initiates pmount only if it's own attempt to "mount" the partition has failed. So usually when it happens there is an error message at the end of "dmesg" from the failed "mount" command.

One other situation that this occurs is if the icons are truly drive icons and not partition icons. But in that case the "label" would not be "sda1" and the "arguments" would not be "drive ext4".

Sorry, I have no idea.

Problems skype and wine in new Puppy Linux Thar 6.0

#228 Post by BerKlei »

Hi,

the new Puppy detects a lot of things more automatically then in older versions (Internet, Grub installation etc.)

I also like the quick pet , installation of common application packages
as skype or wine.

Installing new applications was a pain in the past if there was no pet or sfs files which create a menu entry. A lot of pet / sfs did not work on my machine AMD64 MK36. 1GB RAM. Also no help how to install applications who come as .deb files and Ubuntu files tar.gz.

Unfortunately skype 4.3. use pulseaudio sound system and Puppy 6.0 still has ALSA Soundsystem and Retrovol volume adjustments.
So Microfone and Speakers may not work.
Who can help? Need pulseaudio volume adjust application in pet format incl. Menuentry.

The included Wine application package comes with no menu entries.
Included Application internet explorer does not work (autentification error)
Also not comatible with vista, Windows 7,8.
Somebody out there with a stable and working wine version as pet with menuentry ?

Would be good to display system requirements for each application package.

Try http://www.smokey01.com/gjuhasz/sfs/Sky ... p-puli.pet
  • Does not need pulseaudio
    Can be controlled by retrovol
    Does have menu entry
    Runs by spot user.
BerKlei wrote:Somebody out there with a stable and working wine version as pet with menuentry?
Try http://www.smokey01.com/gjuhasz/sfs/win ... 1.7.21.pet
  • Does have menu entry. However, wine does not need this: simply click on the installed .exe files to start the app (e.g., IrfanView.exe)
Includes winetricks that manages complex apps installation (see http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks)
Both packages tested under Precise and Trusty flavors of Puli http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88691

Have fun!

gjuhasz

hopefully with...
via unichrome graphic support
chomeos touchpad
acer kernel fan control
Toshiba Chromebook CB30 running tahrpup 6.0 CE with kernel 3.17.4
- touchpad does not work (synclient message: Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?)
- did not detect sound card2, hence no sound

I don't know if the default kernel has the sound issue as I have not tried it yet.
Sound worked on the older release of PuppEX Tahr (now on its third), a remaster of tahrpup 6.0 CE, after manual selection of sound card 2, but touchpad didn't work

Thoughts?

Re: usb keyboard problem during "init" script

#231 Post by gyro »

peebee wrote:Unable to type the required savefolder number when the list is displayed
The problem is that your keyboard does not work while the "init" script in "initrd.gz" is running. This occurs in the following situations:
1) Your keyboard uses a specific kernel driver module.
2) The puppy has multiple savefolder/savefiles, OR uses an encrypted savefile. (These require keyboard input during "init".)

Good news A:
Most likely, only a small number of "unlucky" folk will meet both criteria.

Good news B:
Situation 1) can be tested for usb keyboards with the following console command:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep 'Keyboard'
If the output line begins with "hid-generic", then you should have no problems.
If the output line begins with something else, (in my case "logitech-djdevice"), then your are likely to experience this difficulty if you encounter situation 2).

if your puppy is susceptible to the problem you have 2 choices:
1) Ensure you have a keyboard available that is not susceptible.
This could be an old usb keyboard, or a different modern keyboard.
On laptops, the built-in keyboard might work even though an attached usb keyboard does not.
2) Avoid situation 2).

Note: I have 2 Logitech keyboards, the older K520 has the problem, the newer K270 does not.

The mozilla directory in root is a hidden directory.
In Rox file manager.
Click on the eye icon to see hidden directories.

In Firefox->Tools->Add_ons->Plugins

Do you see Flash player and is it active?

When using Getflash.
Did you use menu->Internet->Getflash install Flashplayer?

If you installed Firefox.
How did you do it?
In the mozilla directory under root, I see a plugins directory with a libnpjp2.so file, and there is also a firefox directory under mozilla with a couple files and a couple directories, including a crash reports directory.

Under the directory for my save under my mnt, I see the usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so I expect to see.

I used GetFlash via the menu, but I believe I also installed flash via the tar.gz file from the adobe website, as I have a libflashplayer.so file under root/usr/lib, in addition to a kde4 directory under /usr/lib with kcm__adobe_flash_player.so there.

I ... actually forget how i installed Firefox. Maybe via quickpet? I have firefox 32, so would square?

One thing about installing software packages.
If running Puppy in a way that uses a save file/directory.
Make the save file/directory and be booted using it, before installing program packages.

If you got Flashplayer installed properly you should have /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

In Firefox->Tools->Add_ons->Plugins

You should see Flash player and it should be active.

It is for me with no problem.
I installed by using menu->Internet->Getflash install Flashplayer.

Try this:

In Puppy Package Manager(PPM) click on uninstall
Uninstall any entries for Flashplayer.
Reboot the computer.

After reboot
Try installing by using Getflash.

May also be a good idea to have Firefox installed before running Getflash.

Firefox is best to get by using Quickpet
If unsure how you installed it.
Delete it by using PPM uninstall.
Reinstall using Quickpet.
You can use Firefox internal update to update to latest version.

My computer install of Flashplayer

Hi,
I try to make mysql works but i get the message "ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)"
Mysql needs /var/run/mysqld but this folder doesn't exist, i create it and he needs /var/lib/mysql that does't exist anymore. I create it also and he needs user mysql that i add in /etc/passwd and the group in /etc/group.
Anymore there is still this error. It seems that the server doesn't work because of mysql.sock : this file doesn't exist.
But now i don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help.

Xbatalarm in the Puppy build process

Maybe, we (the Xbatalarm authors, me and my husband) can help, if you can give us a feedback about the wrong behaviour or an error output.

Thanks in advance. Congratulations for Tahrpup. :)

Bye.

Thanks for your interest and your time 666philb.
The parameter was already like it is explain in your link !
I also try some xampp sfs, like Whitesnow 1.8.3, but it's same thing.
Mysql seems to be hard to make it works !

i installed mysql server from the PPM.
i then created a new user called mysql and added some missing folders....

Code: Select all

cd / && mkdir home
cd /home && mkdir mysql
cd /var/log && mkdir mysql
touch /var/log/mysql/error.log
adduser mysql
i just pressed enter for the password.

then i ran

Code: Select all

mysql_install_db
and then started the deamon

Code: Select all

cd /usr ; /usr/bin/mysqld_safe &
and then in a separate terminal

Code: Select all
