Pup For A Rasberry Or A Beaglebone?

#1 Post by Blackfish »

These are allegedly the five best distros for the Rasberry Pi:

I was thinking of going into a Rasberry Pi or a Beaglebone computer system, but I don't know if there is a Puppy distro that will work on them.

I suppose the Arch distro mentioned in the above article would be OK; it certainly sounds good. But I was unable to make it run on either of my old laptops to check it out. It won't boot.

I like the idea of the mini-computers, but I will not part with my Pup.

Hi Blackfish,
If you could give the specs for those computer systems, someone might be able to recommend a Puppy for them. For each system please list:
- CPU details
- amount of RAM
- Hard drive size
If it's not Backed-Up, then it isn't really yours.
You just think it is.

Raspis are there for learning and hacking, Raspian works well for that, cause it's more or less Debian which is also used on many servers. Puppy handles to many things in a special way, it's not the best system to learn about Gnulx.

The good thing about Raspberry PI is also to have one hardware sold many times with mostly the same OS, which makes support easier. Puppy is good for supporting old PCs and make it look easy changing to Linux, but Raspis don't need Puppy.

There were some attempts to put Puppy on the Raspberry Pi that reached the Alpha stage.

If you just download it, you will have to update the kernel.

The easiest way to try Puppy on the Raspberry Pi is to get Berryboot, since you don't have to upgrade the kernel.

http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot

It is a multiboot system for the Pi with a fairly recent kernel and includes Puppy.

Search the forum, there is a lot more information on this.

ZAP & SAP for the Pi

#5 Post by davids45 »

G'day blackfish,

Two Puppy versions were created that run on Raspberry Pi - one by BK (SAP), the other 01micko (ZAP).
As dancytron posted, these were described as alpha standard by the developers in 2012.

But I have just this week got my Pi running as a print server using these :D . I had to use ZAP's first partition to get SAP to boot my 8GB SD card because I could not/cannot get ZAP CUPS to work :? but SAP's CUPS did, so I'm using SAP on the Pi as the printer server.

Also look at his blog for more info. on SAP6.

Good luck with a Pi if you try it.

Not sure what I am going to do just yet. Still doing the research. Thanks, everyone, for your input!
