Lucid, Racy or Slacko, what's the difference?
Been totally immersed in Puppies for a little while now and been to all the sites and read all I can but there are still a couple of things where i am confused.
Does Slacko relace Lucid? Is it for a different purpose? I get Racy is for newer hardware and is still "buntu" under the hood and Slacko is "Slackware" under the hood.
But why have the variants? Whats the benefit? Which to use? Am I the only confused noob on the planet?

Yes but it is not an upgrade but literally a replacement.Does Slacko replace Lucid?

Not really. Much of the same software in Lucid is compiled from SlackoIs it for a different purpose?
HOWEVER for larger programs that does not mean they are compatible
Not so.I get Racy is for newer hardware and is still "buntu" under the hood and Slacko is "Slackware" under the hood.
Both are Puppy + t2 (Racy) and Puppy + Slackware (Slacko) bimaries
Both Racy and Slacko (and Wary for older hardware) are built from woof2
Lucid was based on Woof1 and is being phased out
But why have the variants?
To improve woof2
Developer skill levels and knowledge of how Puppy works increaseWhats the benefit?
Emphasis and approach is different in Slacko, though there are many similarities as
Mick worked on both Lucid and Slacko. For example many sound issues were addressed with Slacko.
Use Slacko 5.3.1 and if it does not work on your hardware (may be older or incompatible)Which to use?
use Racy or Wary (older hardware)
Don't go here, the choices may be too much for you . . .

Hope that helps

Slacko does not 'replace Wary or Racy
Racy is Wary with a newer kernel. They are both designed as working systems with Long term Support. They are alternative options.
You should use Slacko to placate any confusion.
Slacko is stable. Tested and refined. Works well. Includes Slickpet for easy loading of most requested extra software.
Slacko is being developed (currently in Beta) with a newer kernel.
If you wish to help Mick testing the Beta with a newer kernel . . .

Thanks for the contunued input, I am slowly getting there ... I have a Racy build as a VM which I use a lot in my work machine to do stuff and for a giggle loaded in XBMC to test prior to converting my HTPC at home which is struggling with XBMCbuntu (keeps locking up .. another story) ... so thought I would do the same in Slacko but does not start at all (I know it says for Lucid only but hey gave it a go .. did not break anything at least).
Is there any "reason", techinical or political for the move to Slackware as the base for Puppy?
Seeing how my Slacko-USB stick has saved my bacon this week I shall be doing as suggested and trying out the nerw kernel and feeding back ... downloading now.

Just the preference of the lead developer 01Micko.Is there any "reason", technical or political for the move to Slackware as the base for Puppy?
Slackware has a simplicity and solidity and while Lucid was being developed and tested Mick also developed and compiled an Spup each time a new Woof was showcased. This Spup became Spot

and then morphed into Slacko . . .
If you are a noob to Slacko check this out

Lucid, Racy or Slacko, what's the difference?
While I haven't one shred of doubt about what The Lobster is saying but in the end,for me anyway,it all has boiled down to one simple statement." It mainly is
whatever works for me!" Since becoming acquainted with Puppy,I have burned
many CDs with various distros(Puppy only) and the truth is "I have found them mostly to be excellent and the ones that refused to wag their tails was more than likely because this box I have. There is so many variations in our computers there just isn't any "one size fits all" and no matter how brilliant the
developer is,I don't believe it possible. So to anyone who might question "What
Puppy should I use and what's the difference?" I would basically say "Get yourself a box of CDs ,DL the iso,and take them out for a walk. This has always
worked for me. cheers

.... and now we have ... Precise
have to say this has been a most useful thread, just to add to the mix none of the usual Puppies worked on my new work laptop (Dell E5420) which is ok but the WiFi and Wired Ethernet were not playing the game at all and then stumbled across "Precise Puppy" ..... hey ... works fab and if you don't mind me saying one of the best looking Puppies for a long time.
So .... is Precise and official "replacement" for Lucid in the 'buntu based Puppy line or is a mighty fine unofficial spin?

Precise not really a official replacement, but a Puppy version concept test build. So .... is Precise and official "replacement" for Lucid in the 'buntu based Puppy line or is a mighty fine unofficial spin?
After being alpha, it kind of got picked up as a project by Pemasu.
He is trying to debug and bring it to a finished version.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)
