Using Torrents to Distribute Puppy

With the recent release of Slacko many users experienced very slow downloads from the ibiblio server. Makes sense, there are a lot of users wanting to get their paws on the latest and greatest, unfortunately all at the same time! The mirrors help, but even they get choked.

A simple solution is for many members of this community to share some of their bandwidth to distribute this great distribution. It will help share the load, and get Puppy out to everyone as quickly as possible.

Remember, this is exactly what BitTorrent was made for. Distributing files to your peers. Some might suggest bittorrent is illegal. It's not, distributing copyright material is illegal, the protocol isn't.

In Puppy's not too recent history, there has been some losses in terms of servers, eg puppeee.com puppylinux.ca etc. Torrent files are small enough to host on a server, even this forum, hopefully making things easier to keep safe from server losses and downtime.

It's for Mac, but works the same way for Linux.

I would encourage anyone to create torrents for any Puppy ISOs they have, as well as software packages. [/url]

Great idea p310don,

With Puppy's increasing popularity, new releases have become quite slow to download. This evening ibiblio is positively crawling along to deliver the new 528 version 4. Torrent files would be excellent. However, after reading the "how to make a torrent" page, it seems the original creator of the torrent has to be hooked to the internet 24/7? I suppose to provide the original link to start the transmission. Can the files be uploaded to the forum? Is that how you handled the torrents you provided? thanks for the help....again, great idea.

Yes, but not exactly.

A torrent is divided into chunks that are distributed to peers across the internet. The peers, when they have the chunks, can also re-distribute the chunks. The job of the torrent handler, like Transmission, is to re-arrange all these chunks into the original file.

As the original torrent creator, you will have to stay connected to seed the chunks, as you are the only one with the content. Once another peer who is sharing, or seeding, has everything, you can actually stop sharing.

I leave my PC on overnight, every night to share Puppies. I do turn it off during the day when I'm at work however. Still, I have shared Slacko over 60 times over. The theory would be that at least 60 others are also sharing it, thus allowing me to stop my sharing during the day time.

The original .torrent file is not shared by me, but is hosted on a site. In this case, I am uploading the compressed tar.gz file, which contains the .torrent file to this forum. Unfortunately the forum doesn't support uploading of .torrent files directly.

I hope I have made things clearer, and further hope you can help share puppy with the world!

Thanks for the explanation. I'm still a little fuzzy about where the actual original "seed" is originating, once it is offered on torrent. Is the iso actually uploaded to the forum? or is that tar merely have the .torrent file that then seeds from your computer. So, if your PC is off (say during the day) does that mean anyone clicking on the link can't download the compressed file and then open the torrent? Or, if one person has downloaded, and then leaves their machine on (while your is off) does that second computer begin the seed? I know I'm making this way too hard (and I think I know the answer to one of my questions- peer to peer means the file is not hosted on the forum, but on your computer...) Sorry.

The only thing hosted on this forum is the torrent file, which is contained in the tar.gz or zip files I have uploaded here.

The actual iso files, or puppies, are on my computer, and whoever else is seeding the torrent. The torrent file is basically a map and instruction manual to find the file on my computer and copy it to the end user's computer.

So, if anyone clicks the link on this forum, they can always download it, but if my computer is off, they won't get the puppy iso from my computer. The idea of a torrent, is that someone else can also be sharing it, so therefore, the end user still gets the same file from another person's computer.

I have tried this in the past with Puppy Arcade.. there were LOADS of people downloading, but no one seeded.. Hit and run behaviour...

Its been a while since I've updated this torrent page post, but I thought I'd share some statistics.

I have lost a lot of data on what I've shared from changing from Lucid to Saluki, but, since using Saluki to share, which is about 2 months I have uploaded roughly:

TOP9x 0 times

Fatdog 1 times

Lucid 5.28 1 times

Slacko 5.3 118 times (that's pretty good I think)
