How to boot 5.2.5 from live CD? (Solved)

#1 Post by FleaBitten2 »

Hi all,
Am a complete noob trying to run 5.2.5 from a CD.
The approach:
1. downloaded lupu-525.iso
2. Burned the ISO to CD
-noticed the names were all caps on CD so copied to desktop renamed all files in lower case, and re-burned to CD.
current files/sizes on CD are:

boot.cat 2KB
boot.msg 1KB
help2.msg 2KB
help.msg 2KB
initrd.gz 1,859KB
isolinux.bin 24KB
isolinux.cfg 1KB
logo.16 20KB
lupu_525.sfs 125,329KB
vmlinuz 2,177KB

3. Tried to boot the CD on a Dell Optiplex GX240, previously made sure the boot sequence was using the CD drive as first option.
(the machine is currently using Crudows 2000 Professional as OS)

For some reason it didn't find the .sfs file or boot from the CD, instead it booted up under 2000 Professional.

I have read some packages require a bootloader, or GRUB application, but from reading the literature it looked as if puppy would just require the ISO to CD,and would self-boot.

I like the size of puppy, and hope to try a thumbdrive also, but the obvious is eluding me for now

Thanks
Additional info: 2000 could open and list all the files on the CD

It looks like the CD was burned correctly.

Some CD drives are not compatible with some brands of CD. Have you a different brand of CD-R, or better yet CD-RW, to experiment with?

I usually have good luck with theses CDs, I just now copied all the files from the CD to desktop and they copied without a problem.

CD drive D:\ shows up in the DOS command line, and shows all the files there and intact.

The only thing that is a little strange is the isolinux.bin files is dated 10-22-2010, when all the other files are dated 4-01-2011.

This method will NOT get you a bootable CD. Your original method of burning the ISO file was correct. Did it not boot for you?

Ahhh, Ok,

Tried the original burned CD with the uppercase.
YAY!!!!!!!!!!
its up an running!

So did the original burned CD have some kinda hidden system files, or was the uppercase/lowercase issue resolved?

Thanks a million :D
