Tips:
- when using joypad navigation with rom-loader, use your d-pad where possible or try to disable 'analog' mode until game starts
- you need not setup an emulators rejoystick profile, if it's already configured to use a joypad (except 'Quit' keys, see next post)
- vlc cannot play local .flv or RealMedia files, but streams work

Enabling *FULL* Joypad Navigation in Rom-Loader

Requirements: a joypad or joystick, Xorg desktop (1024x768 or more recommended)

You can use your joypad to browse, load (and play) your roms, by using the RejoystickCC tool with Rom-Loader.

1. Plug in your joypad before the desktop loads up.

2. Open 'Menu->Setup->Setup Puppy Arcade->RejoystickCC'
(or Quickstart->RejoystickCC)

3. Edit the Rom-Loader profile, using RejoystickCC:

- Select the 'romloader' profile and click 'Edit'
- Two windows will appear: Rejoystick (left) and a list of the Keyboard Controls for Rom-Loader (right)
- To the left is rejoystick, showing all the buttons and axes found for your joypad
- To the right is the Keyboard shortcuts that you need to map to your pad

4. How to map the Rom-Loader controls to your joypad:

- Press a button on your joypad to see where how it is listed and numbered in the rejoystick menu
- Click on the button you want to use and you'll be asked to choose a keyboard key for that button, so do it.
- To use key combinations such as Alt+Q (Quit), you must map 'Alt' and 'Q' to separate buttons (and press them both at once)
- When you have mapped all the listed keys to separate joypad buttons, click 'OK'

- RejoystickCC will then save the profile.
- Rom-Loader will automatically load all required Rejoystick profiles, you do not need to load them manually.

5. To enable exit (from emulators) back to Rom-Loader via joypad:

- Edit the RejoystickCC profiles of the emulators you wish to use through Rom-Loader:
- Important: You must map *AT LEAST* the 'Quit' keyboard shortcut of the chosen emulators to your joypad

- You need not setup every button in an emulators rejoystick profile, if it's already configured to use a joypad, only the Quit command listed.

Example:
- Open RejoystickCC and edit the 'snes' profile in RejoystickCC, and map the 'Q' key to button09 on your joypad.
- When you press button09 during play, Snes9x-GTK (the actual emulator) will quit (and return to Rom-Loader)

6. To complete full, working joypad navigation in Rom-Loader, you must also:

- Enable joypad controls in your emulators directly, or map all the in-game controls (the keys listed) to your pad

REMEMBER:
- If you map *only* the 'Quit' commands, you must setup your joypads using the emulators themselves, to play the roms.
- To do this, you can open the actual emulators and use their menus to edit your controls.

Loading the default emulators, to edit their settings:

- You can easily load the emulators themselves by using the 'Fontend-Chooser' and setting all options to 'Default'
- You can then load the emulators themselves through the desktop icons or the Puppy Menu

Thanks for this great distro! I want to report two problems that I've encountered:

1. I can't exit the fullscreen mode of the Genesis/MegaDrive Emulator, so I have to reset the computer!!!

2. I can't get my openGL driver to work with my ATI X1100, so N64 emulator won't work. Any suggestions?

Other than the above, Puppy Arcade is a fine distro, always useful for some retro gaming nostalgia!

You should probably read the docs on the emu first, but it actually shows you in the menu what key combo it uses. Alt+Return (Alt+Enter).

This release is great. I can already see speed improvement in much of the emulation. I'm not sure if this is do to the Linux kernel, Desktop, WM, or just the revision improvements of the apps themselves.

But all in all, it's looking like a solid improvement over PA9.

One side question I have is... I cant get the Playstation emulator (PCSX) to work with the X accelerated plugin. Does it not support MGA cards?

For OpenGL drivers (which is required for N64), you are strongly recommended to read the 'Help Guide' and choose the appropriate drivers.

(Actually, I recommend you read it, all of it, just to get to know about the emulators..)

Of course, I can't test all OpenGL packages, as I only have 1 gfx card, but it's always a bit of trial and error..

- The first thing you should try is the 'xorg_xorg_dri' package in the Puppy Package Manager, this works for most generic cards...

- If that doesn't work, then remove it and move on...

- If you have an Nvidia card, then use the links in the Help guide.
- If you have a Radeon, you should also find the right drivers through the help guide.

- There are also MESA packages available for other cards (intel, etc?)

I would REALLY appreciate it if users who get OpenGL working could post the following:

- the graphics card model and version
- the pet file used to get OpenGL working
- a quick description of the install process (if not simply install, restart X)

This info will be very helpful for other users..
(and for myself to make a OpenGL-Installer app... )

Once again, you made my day. I am downloading it right now. I had much fun the last days configuring and tweaking PA9 and forgot all about the emulation side. Since yesterday i had also a hard time setting up a smba in PA9, in which i suceeded only partially. But again, after fresh PA10 install on a stick, i shall prevail.
There is a possibility to turn PA10 in a small smb-server with windows 7, right?
Is there a samba version you would prefer with your latest distro?

I'll have a look around, but I don't use SAMBA, and removed it from Puppy Arcade about a year ago (I think its still missing!)...

So you would need to add the full SAMBA package, with its libs as well, probably... Most of the newer samba apps and packages around are for Lupu, these will not work in Puppy Arcade...

But you should be able to get the original samba that came with puppy4, through the puppy4 repo at ibiblio... Which is here:

After several others this pet worked fine on an acer 5611 - 300 @ 1280 x 1024 /16 for me and improved graphics output drastically. My testtool was mupen64, which started in fullscreen.

im one of those people who cant stand to have the settings changed. would be awesome if you could make it with a lockdown feature. so that once its running how you like, then you can remove any chance of inexperienced users accidentally changing things. that would make this a true cabinet OS.

I am not on puppy at the moment, I'm stuck on ubuntu at work...
But here's how to do it, from memory... (I think!!)

At shutdown, you should be asked whether or not to save to your save file, if you are using a usb install.. (PUPMODE 13, maybe?)

1. So, you must force puppy to think its on a 'usb' install by adding 'pmedia=usb' (or something similar) to the boot options, in either syslinux or grub..

3. Then, you can edit /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown and find the line that says 'Save this session?' and make the answer always equal no (no=1, by the way)..

Then your session will never be saved, but your save file will still get loaded at bootup.

You may need to enable OpenGL for improved performance on your machine.
Links for OpenGL can be found here in the main post.

You could also try changing the video output from or to "Xvideo"

Also, you can use the frameskip option to skip frames when the game slows down.

You can disable sound to improve speeds if nothing else works.

All these options can be found in the SDLMAME conifg file, (in /root, double click on it to open it)..
Or in the Settings menus for SDLMAME, GXMAME and/or MAMEPGUI (depending on which you are using)

Well, it sounds great... I never got around to making a separate little arcade box, but would still love to... The hardware choices look fine, I may go for a better CPU - but only to play some (mainly the PSX and N64) games more speedily and nicely.

As far as RAM goes, anything over 256mb should work nicely, at 256mb and below, it may be a little slower.

Anyway, one of the major 'issues' you will face is to get OpenGL (3d acceleration) working correctly - I was careful in my emulator choice to make sure this is only required for N64 games... However, all systems will work nicer once OpenGL is working, as well as Adobe Flash video (youtube, etc)..

Choosing the right driver for your gfx chip/card is the hardest part, installing them is usually very easy. Apparently, you need the MESA package for your gfx chip.

So to enable 3D acceleration (OpenGL.. aka DRI), try the MESA package.. If it doesnt work, try the xorg_xorg_full_dri.pet...

However, I may be wrong, but gfx your card (VIA UniChrome), may not be supported... read here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 741#379741.. (But this might not apply to Puppy Arcade 10... It has a slightly newer Xorg..)

About installing Puppy Arcade to your CF card, I would use the 'Frugal Installer' in Menu->Setup, as it is the simplest method, and fairly automatic (just click next a lot and usually you are fine)..

To be honest I pretty pants with linux lol,
How I found Arcade 10 when I was constantly looking up how to make Mini arcade cabinets ect... and just stumbled across it - I said to myself How did I miss this when I`m already using puppy - its because I never Really came into the forums lol

Anyway there`s a few options I can take I have a acer aspire revo 3610
With daul core 1.6 atom 4gb of ram and thats small to or Stripping down
My acer aspire one netbook 1.6 single core 1.5gb ram.... and of course the ebox 4300.. or just buy a ITX bundle from somewhere

I`m going to use google sketchup to design the cabinet I think,
If I can get use to it lol

To delete stuff, you need to supply a text file, containing a list of files to delete.
The list must contain full paths, and no empty lines.
