Hi rsrcn51
and many thanks keeping this thread up to date !
On puppy 4.2.1 live-cd session (having libusb-0.1) with Canon Pixma MP160 connected
(...Just getting a try from a live-cd session for reporting results)
+ installed
libgimp2.0-2.6.8.pet
libgio-2.0.so.0.pet (requested dependency for libgimp)
scangearmp-1.40.pet
scangearmp-250series-1.40.pet
(restarting JWM and X )
results:
menu entry "Canon Scangear scanner":
it does not start from menu;
starting from line command
returns the following message
That's it!
Looking at Canon website, there is no Linux driver for MP160
Conclusion: MP160 scanner (only) works fine using XSane following your third solution on page 1 this post + earlier scangearmp_common-1.10-1.i386.pet installation;
but I cannot get the MP160 printer working and then, sadly , use it only ...for scanning !.
( So I use to print from another PC + common black and white 2nd-hand-bought HP-1100-laser printer )
Cheers, Charlie

@charlie6: That's odd. I just set up a fresh frugal install of 4.2.1 with my MP490 and I didn't get the GTK error. In fact, it ran fine even though libgio was missing.
This sounds like a hardware issue unrelated to the scanner. Do you have another machine or Puppy version you could try?
I will upload a PET that has the MP160-specific stuff. Maybe it will help. It is now listed in the main post.
Regarding a printer driver for your MP160. Patriot has made one here, but the download link is now dead. Perhaps if you send him a PM, he could upload the driver again.
If not, I may be able to build one for you. Have you already tried the Gutenprint driver that comes with Puppy?
Have you been looking at the Canon Europe site for drivers? I notice that they have no Linux listing for the MP160 while the Canon Australia site does. The North American Canon sites don't appear to support Linux at all.

Hi rscrn51 !
Again thanks, thanks , for your reply !
I reply on your post:
Now on my current puppie :
[ synth's puppyTurbopup-Xtreme-v.1.0 (= puppy 4.20 derivative) remasterized with esmourguit's french translation package + french locale + CUPS1.3.9 + seamonkey 2.0.6 + efax-gtk + wine 1.1.12 + mp150_sane-0.14.4.pet + scangearmp_common-1.10-1.i386.pet + others ]
I could download and get a try on Patriot's canon-common-3.00-i486.pet on my current puppie as it includes now the MP160 driver: I just ran CUPS and installed the MP160 printer
choosen #usb 1 CANON MP160 among the 3 listed #usb X MP160 references - and could get the printer test page well coloured printed - Woopie ! =-))
(NB: none of the proposed «#usb 1 backend...» and «#usb 2 backend...» give results )
Cheers, Charlie

I reply on your post:
I have to say a bit more about my live-cd session on Puppy 4.2.1. ... it had esmourguit's french adaptation package. But I think it does not modify that much Puppy to get the error I got. I will come back on it later to try again...That's odd. I just set up a fresh frugal install of 4.2.1 with my MP490 and I didn't get the GTK error....Do you have another machine or Puppy version you could try?

Both Canon Pixma MP160 's printer and scanner are now working thanks to Patriot 'pet...Regarding a printer driver for your MP160. Patriot has made one...

USB to parallel or Serila to parallel
Hi rcrsn,
I am trying to get puppy to use a parallel port printer. (Epson). I have the drivers for the printer. The problem is I do not have a parallel port on my computer so I will either need to use a serial to parallel converter or a USB to parallel converter.
Can you let me know if there a way I can do this. These converters need drivers I suppose, but the ones I see in the market do not have linux drivers. Any help would be most welcome.
TY,
crsrds.

Hi,
I just purchased a BAFO 1284 USB to parallel cable, connected it to an Epson dotmatrix printer, using lupu 5.1, it got detected as mnt/dev/usb/lp0. Using cups admin I clicked on find printer and selected the driver and bingo..it worked. Wasted too much time looking for drivers, which it did not need in the first place. Thank you rcrsn for the reply. Just placing this on record so it may help someone like me.

Hi rscrn51,
many thanks for the MP160-specific pet:
it runs nice since a few weeks now! it's really very handy to use.
I appreciate very much the black and white scanning options (produces tinny sized files) which I am using the most for scanning and mailing hand sketches.
I appreciate also that now both printing and scanning functions of MP160 can be used within a puppy session (before I had to load the printer drivers to get a print; then the scanner was desactived).
Thanks again!

Attached below is the common package for the Scangear MP v1.60 series and the driver for the MP280.
You will need both. However, it appears that this series does NOT need the libgimp package.
If you own an MP280 and download these packages, would you please report back with their success or failure.

rcrsn51, thanks so much for all the work you've done.
I just got a Pixma MX870 all in one, and with your and Patriots help, upgraded CUPS to 1.311 on my Puppy 4.32 and loaded Canon wireless printer drivers, etc. Wireless printing now works, and I'm focusing on scanning.
I've started with your Pixma package for Xsane, since I'm used to using that scanning program. But the Puppy opening script for Xsane asks if the scanner is connected via USB, Parallel, or SCSI, only. Not via network. So wireless doesn't seem to be a possibility, at present.
The next choice, Canon scan software doesn't look like there's a driver for the MX870, unless I'm mistaken about that. So if you plan on writing any more drivers for this thread, that's one I'd like to see.
Thanks!

Attached below is the common package for the Scangear MP v1.50 series and the driver for the MX870.
You need both. However, this series does NOT need the libgimp package. You will find a menu item under Graphic for the ScangearMP scanner program.
@vtpup: Could you test this by first connecting your MX870 directly by USB? Then try by wireless. If you are very lucky, it may detect the wireless scanner!
[Edit] The MX340 driver below also requires the scangearmp_common-1.5.pet.

canon mp270 scanner
i download pixma-backend-qrky-1.0.21.pet posted by rcrsn51, run xsane image scanner in puppy 520, & my scanner is detected, thanks rcrsn51.
Here is the scangearmp driver package for the MP495. It also requires the scangearmp_common-1.60.pet from Page 2. However, it does NOT require the Gimp package. When installed, there will be a menu entry for the scangear program under Graphic.
The MG5100 driver attached below also requires the scangearmp_common-1.60.pet from Page 2.

Canon MP160 on Slacko
Hi rcrsn51,
on Slacko4.99.7
works fine after only installed:
scangearmp-common-1.40.pet
libgimp2.0-2.6.8.pet
scangearmp-mp160-1.00.pet
scangearmp-locale-1.40.pet
Just one slight detail which ennoys me a bit: (on Slacko or on puppy 4.20 as well)
usually, when in a 'save as' dialog box, the path where to save the to-be-saved-file may be selected just:
- browsing across directories by using the mouse cursor and click once on the choosen folders name
- and then entering the file name;
here with scangearmp, one has to double click on each selection instead this in spite of other applications gtkdialog 'save as' boxes are 'single click navigation' settled.
Moreover, I'm using a pen tablet. So I use to position the cursor using the pen and validate the selection by pressing just once whether the 'Enter' or the 'SpaceBar' key with the other hand. This cannot be done with scangearmp.
Is there a way to get the scangearmps dialog box working as the other 'save as' dialog box (as on abiword, or whatever else application)?
Thanks for any advice!
Cheers, Charlie

Re: Canon MP160 on Slacko
Scangearmp is using the GTK file chooser for its "Save as" which has that annoying double-click function. There is nothing I can do about it.charlie6 wrote:here with scangearmp, one has to double click on each selection instead this in spite of other applications gtkdialog 'save as' boxes are 'single click navigation' settled.
However, you could just save the file to some place easy, like /root, then copy it to the desired location afterwords.
Thanks, scanner works in racy 5.2.2 and Saluki and also prints with your canon_mp280-3.40.petrcrsn51 wrote:Attached below is the common package for the Scangear MP v1.60 series and the driver for the MP280.

Here are the Scangear drivers for the MX410 and MX880. These units are wifi-enabled, so they are capable of network scanning. Depending on your Puppy version, they may be auto-detected by the pixma backend in SANE, so you can use Xsane or Peasyscan without installing these drivers.
If not, download both the common PET and the model-specific PET. Run ScangearMP from the Graphic menu. Perform an Update operation and wait for Scangear to locate your device. Canon detects a networked scanner by its MAC address instead of the usual IP address.

Hi RCRN,
My office has a Canon Pixma MP800 and I can't find the specific .pet for that. If you have the time, could you put one together please?
I'm using Lucid 528 mostly, on a frugal install. do you need any other info?
Thanks
Bones
