I know I also have a topic with questions about modifying Lucid Puppy, but I just have to ask this.

I want a really minimalistic, nice looking OS. It's for a laptop. Actually, I only want a media player and a text editor which can open and modify .doc files. Now I really do like puppy, but I don't know if I can make it that minimalistic, so.. is there an OS which may fit me?
I do like puppy, but I want as less as possible. Like MacPup (I just love Enlightenment) but then with only the programs I mentioned.
Maybe this is not the right place for this topic, I'm sorry if that is the case. All I want is a fancy, minimalistic OS to write, listen music and manage files.

What are the laptop's specs? Would you want Internet access?

I use Tiny Core Linux, where you start with a very small base system and then download extensions with the applications you want:

It's a good distro if you want maximum customization. I had to invest a fair amount of time getting it to work right on my old hardware though (sound card issues). That and other quirks can occasionally get frustrating. Puppy on the other hand worked for me right away. I went with Tiny Core because of the customization features but if you want an out-of-the-box system one of the Puppy derivatives is a good bet.

NVM -- assuming that you don't want Internet access, I know of an amazingly minimal OS that will run on any laptop that isn't a MacBook.

DOS.

Ah... I can hear you laughing at me. Everything you need is available for DOS.

(1) Music Player. Try Mpxplay --> http://mpxplay.sourceforge.net/

(2) Word Processor. This is a little tricky. Your best bet is WordStar For DOS. The catch (other than a learning curve) is that you won't be able to read and write /directly/ to a Word *.doc -- you'll have to go through *.rtf instead. Go here for WordStar For Dos--> http://www.wordstar.org/wsdos/pages/downloads.htm

(3) If you /do/ need Internet access... then Arachne is a graphical Web browser that will do just fine. Find it here --> http://www.glennmcc.org/arachne/

(4) What version of DOS? I'd go for FreeDOS if you don't want to spend money... if you absolutely have to HAVE TO be able to use a mouse, then I've got a copy of Windows 3.11 that I can send you disks from. It's abandonware -- even M$ doesn't care about it anymore.

I forgot to mention the programs

PyRoom - a full screen text editor, clone of WriteRoom for Mac (DarkRoom for Windows). PyRoom features "distraction-free writing"

Vlc - media player with audio and video codecs

Abiword - an open source word processing program

Gnumeric - spreadsheet

Midori - lightweight web browser

The specifications are:
Toshiba Tecra 8100. Pentium 3 700 mHz, 256 MB RAM, 128 bits s3 ATI savage Graphical Card and 10 GB HD.
There won't be another OS on it.
And I wasn't laughing at the DOS idea, but it doesn't really fit my idea of a fancy OS. Sorry if I'm asking too much.
I'll look into Tiny Core Linux, that BrowserLinux version (MijnPup (Made by a dutch man?)) and that link.

Hello Fenrir,
You've got a 10GB Hard Drive, you like Macpup, it's small and will still leave lots of room on your hard Drive. I don't see the problem.

What's a 100Mb's or less among friends.

Wanting to cut down Puppy when in reality there's no good reason behind it because your Laptop has enough ram etc doesn't make sense to me?
If your Laptop only had 64MB's of ram then I could understand.

The reason is because I just want to get rid of the things I don't need, to keep it as simple and organized as possible.
It's just for the look and feel. Of course, if it's not possible, I'll try MacPup, but if I can manage what I really want, I'll do that.

EDIT:
Tiny Core Linux looks very promising. I really like the simple launchbar at the bottom of the screen.
Now I just have to find a window manager to get rid of the simple, boring grey windows. It's a very practical OS, but because I'm going to use it for writing, I want it to look a bit more... lively. Happy.

Sorry if I'm annoying with these things I ask for.
Hiding is of course possible, but I prefer to not have them at all. Except for installing it to the HD. It's just, I want nothing that can distract me from writing.
But I do love MacPup. Though, if I use that, can I make an iconbar like a mac at the bottom? Because it does look very pretty, I'm still interested in MacPup^^
