I know I'm a bit late for this but I only recently came back from a Christmas break (more or less without Puppy).

One of the things I did look at briefly was Ttuxxx's Gnumeric, which as I reported earlier I was worried about.

I have to say that the things I looked at, like the inbuilt functions and graphing tools, passed with flying colours.

Like others have reported since Christmas I noticed the error messages when clicking for help - although the functions list help performed fine, which is a big improvement from Lucid 5.1.1.

I would like to thank all you guys who have been putting Gnumeric through its paces.

I would also like to personally thank Ttuxxx for his efforts with getting his small footprint Gnumeric and for the effort he has put in to provide help functionality for Gnumeric and Abiword. This is a bit extra from his usual brief of compiling as much as possible for use with Puppy. I am grateful for this extra effort and I am sure it will benefit serious and novice Gnumeric users alike.

Thanks again Ttuxxx.

Lupu-520 Release Candidate released JAN 4

#523 Post by Billtoo »

I booted up the 520 live cd with pfix=ram and sound, screen resolution,
and the wired network were all good on first boot.
I downloaded the ati pet in quickpet and it installed saying a reboot
was needed.
I then used the universal installer to do a frugal install to the hard
drive and it created a puppy520 directory and copied the files there.
I then ran grub4dos and rebooted.

During the reboot I was prompted to save the file and what size
etc.,which I did, but I didn't point it to the puppy520 directory to
save the file (forgot), so when the computer booted up again I was
back to square one.
I realized my mistake and moved the save file to the puppy520
directory and rebooted (without saving) and all is good, ati driver
installed.
Anyhow, the universal installer puts the files in puppy520 but when
you log off and save the file it doesn't go to puppy520 so unless you
change the directory at the prompt in the log off routine it doesn't
work properly.
It's not a bug I guess but I'll bet I'm not the first one to make the
mistake :)

since 516, connecting to wifi on ibm x40 makes rox take 15-20 seconds to open. It's very annoying. Firefod is faster at ~10-15 but still way slower than what it used to be.

I still get this behaviour on 520rc
Is this on a fresh install? Does it only happen the first time? do they take that long to open every time?

Go to Menu -> System status and config -> Htop and see if one program is using all of the cpu.

When I made use of the symlink from mnt/home back to root then it failed to boot despite having booted some 10 times in a row before I made that one? But that could be unrelated due to it failed to boot even when doing pfix=ram so it seems to be some other factor that kick in. Maybe the
RFKILL thing that makes Fluppy work each time is the major factor.

I fail to get why a lack of that one would be that devastating.

Would it be difficult to include the RFKILL into Lupu-520?
Hi nooby

If you like lupu but find that fluppy works better on your hardware why don't you try a hybrid lupu / fluppy system as described here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60180

I've made a hybrid lupu520 / fluppy010 as a test and it seems to work ok.

I'm posting from it now.

Cheers

(snip)Installed Icewm from the PPM, the WM Switcher wouldn't change to icewm (did nothing) and exit to prompt from the menu did nothing. Ctrl/Alt/B-s to a prompt worked and afterward the WM Switcher appeared to start working again.
Yes. That is the fix JamesC. 01micko and I worked and worked to make that not happen. Grrrrr.

Very cool peebee.
I've also made hybrid a lupu / wary system for my laptop to add Agere modem support to lupu

and a hybrid lupu / spup system for my Thinkpad as that supports my Netgear pcmcia wifi adaptor better (i.e. it works)

Very true, been following the events... but .... this is not intuitive obvious... not by a long shot. Can the program help be re directed or removed from the program? A bubble help overly in the program, to the menu location, or verbal reference when you start Abiword. Guarantee you will get questions on this.

Puppy 520-RC

#531 Post by sszindian »

‘A New Twist To A New Puppy’

As you probably know by reading my past treads, I was not able to ‘Update’ Puppy to a newer version since 517...

After downloading 520-RC , I again tried to load the new version but I decided to take a different approach this time.
1: I booted 520 from the CD (as I always do with all my Puppy’s) Everything went fine and ‘Did Not Take The Upgrade Option’ so 520 installed to RAM.
2: Beautiful... A new desktop with the 520 features. I Installed a browser and decided to shutdown to see if it would create a ‘save file’ with the new browser update.
3: ‘It Did NOT’ It said ‘No Suitable Partition To Save To!’
4: I shut down and rebooted again using version 517
5: I checked my partitions using GParted Partition Manager from the Menu.
6: I use the ‘whole HD’ for Puppy stuff and apparently when I first created it, it installed as a ‘ext-4‘. (Apparently all updates from 517 up will not install on a ext-4. (this might be why many are having problems updating???)
7: I created a new partition ‘ext-2‘
8: I rebooted with 520, went fine at the new desktop.
9: Did a shutdown from the Menu
10: Asked me if I wanted to create a save file for 520
11: I did and named it Puppy-520
12: It saved.
13: Rebooted (again from CD - as always) Started loading then...
14: It asked on the screen if I wanted to use
1: Puppy-517 save file (which is on ext-4)
2: Puppy-520 save file (which is on ext-2)
15: I selected Puppy-517 save file
16: It started and then upgraded my 517 save file... ‘I thought Oh No not again’ (expecting the same problems as previous updates.)
17: After the upgrade finished... there I was at the ‘Old 517 desktop but now running with the New Puppy 520 version. ‘WOW’ (Icons were a bit messed up on desktop but all my files were intact with my personal wallpaper... EXCEPT ‘LeafPad’... NicoEdit still keeps ‘replacing’ LeafPad... Hmmmm)
18: Anyway... ‘The New Twist Is’

19: You Can Have TWO VERSIONS of Puppy-520 on your system and SELECT which version you want to use when bootup starts!!! Maybe even MORE if you want to create more ext partitions on your HD? This could be very handy for the programmers developing Puppy also for everyone that wants to work with TWO versions for specific needs!!!!

‘How about that..... ‘Isn’t Puppy Amazing.....???’ And to think, all because I wasn’t able to ‘update’ way back at 517!

PS: Yes Abiword HELP is in the 'MENU' (left-lower-desktop- Document-Document/Publishing) It is NOT available from AbiWord Program Help Menu!

Re: Subpixel smoothing

Terryphi wrote:My fonts are not as clear on Lupu as Ubuntu. Is there any way of enabling subpixel smoothing on Lupu?
Actually Terryphi, there is. Iguleder created a little app called Fontwizard. Give me a while and I will find it and post it here. Naturally, it dont work with Opera, but makes a huge difference to Seamonkey and Firefox, and pretty much everything else. Are you using an LCD screen?

EDIT Here you go. Just run it from the menu entry, tick all the boxes, and re-start X.

midori in Puppy 5.2

#533 Post by jinx100 »

The midori browser seems to be installed in 520 but not listed as one of the default browser choices. Typing midori in the console brings up the browser with complaints about libaspell.so.15 and a few icons but it works.

Any reason not to make it an option for Puppy? The Firefox browser sends my 128 MB RAM computer into swap file heck. I need something lighter.

At one point I actually had three installs of 511 on my K6 machine - full install on an ext2 partition, and a frugal and LiveCD install on the main FAT32 partition. The lupusave for the frugal is actually from the LiveCD install, which I no longer use.
sszindian wrote:This could be very handy for the programmers developing Puppy also for everyone that wants to work with TWO versions for specific needs!!!!
My 511 full install is the day-to-day Puppy version, the main purpose of the frugal one is for checking if updates to core programs will work properly on the machine (some of the newer apps in 520 are incompatible with the K6 series). On a frugal, updated programs are written to the lupusave and (AIUI) effectively mask the version in the sfs file. Should something not work, the pet is uninstalled from PPM and Puppy reverts to the version in the sfs.

On a full install, since all of Puppy's files are written directly to the hard drive, installing an updated pet will completely overwrite the older version so if there's a problem (as I had with the earlier, non-ttuuxx, Gnumeric 1.10.12) uninstalling the update will actually entirely remove the app! You then either need to find a pet of the old version or manually copy the missing files from the sfs (unless I've missed a backup replaced files or rollback option on PPM).
Zhaan - AMD K6 2 500, 512MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 VR. Full install Wary 5.5 HardInfo Report
Merlin - Core i5-4590, 8GB RAM, Radeon R9 270X. Slacko 5.7.0

Testing PUP520 and SAMBA

#535 Post by gcmartin »

I run a multi-session LiveCD PUP520 system.

OK, I completed 520 boot scenario test for SAMBA. We are still not at a level that I can produce a newbie user's guide, though. Someone in Puppyland needs to make a library, namely /var/opt/samba/locks, for SAMBA's locks that is part of the PUP520 distro. Samba need that folder so that it can manage user locks when SAMBA starts. It gets defined when the SAMBA PET installs, but, PUPPY is not saving it over reboots. So, it we make it a standard static folder, SAMBA will start properly over a LiveCD reboot. This is One of teh options to resolve this dilemma so that a new newbie guide to file sharing on PUP5.2 can go forward.

There seems to be another problem in LIveCD world: It appears that if I install more than one PET from quickpet; say SAMBA and Chrome, when the shutdown goes to save the session, its taking a very long time. When it complete, ALL save sessions are lost on LiveCD . From what I can tell "it appears" that maybe the problem is either the file size necessary for shutdown, or that there is a static file size definition somewhere which may be defeating proper creation of the session save folder on teh LIVECD.

Lastly, I looked at Shino's site. Seems he has made a PET for SAMBA. Would it be simpler to allow quickpet to access that PET instead of pulling his SFS and doing all the work of transferring it to a PET on the user's PC. It would certainly shorten the time to get SAMBA running because that conversion would not be necessary.

Everything else I tested looks very good. If there are recommendations I can help with, let me know.

Hope this helps.

Puppy 5.2

#536 Post by sszindian »

It appears that the:

'Save - No Save' file session-

has been 'scrubbed' for Luci 5.2, at least I don't see any options in the menu structure...

Is anyone still working on this or do we forget it... I noticed in other Puppy forum-links a feature like this has been desired!!!!

Underscore, not dash, in SFS name?

#537 Post by jinx100 »

I've been using bootflash in Puppy Lucid 511 to create a flash drive from all the various 5.2 beta ISO files. The drive is formatted and the boot files copied over but the lupu sfs file is never copied. Looking in the bootflash script, it looks for " *-[0-9][0-9][0-9].sfs " but all the beta ISOs include "lupu_###.sfs". It's the change from dash to underscore which prevents copying the .sfs file.

Any reason for this?

Edit: Changing the bootflash script line to look for:

*[_,-][0-9][0-9][0-9].sfs

will accept both dash and underscore.

The Samba pet is in PPM.

The Midori browser is for internal use. It does not include SSL which makes for unsafe browsing.
There are two full versions of midori in the PPM.as well as Aurora, another small browser. Personally I don't think they will be that much smaller than Firefox or Opera (or even Seamonkey). Dillo is cool, but does not have javascript and does not always render CSS aesthetically.
