All web browsers crash on startup [SOLVED]

I've been using puppy for a couple weeks now, and I've been very happy with its speed and stability, but yesterday for some reason Firefox crashed. When I attempted to re open it crashed before the window had fully opened - subsequent attempts yielded the same results.

I tried restarting the computer, but the behavior remained the same. I then attempted to open Midori and it also crashed immediately. I even tried wine iExplorer. The wine window opened, by iExplorer did not start and the window remained blank.

I run a gigabyte motherboard
GTX 275 graphics
intel quad core 2.8gHz
6Gb 1333 RAM
1.5TB Seagate HDD
128GB Western Digital Caviar HDD

I boot puppy from a CD and I have my save file in its own 3GB FAT 32 partition on the 1.5TB HDD.

Running the programs from the command line results in the following:

I was trying to install flash into firefox quite close to the time of the crash - could be related.

I'm not stupid, but I have very little experience with linux and/or any kind of programing, so please try to keep it simple.

Do you mean that when creating the save, you used the whole partition or did you create a save file which is on this 3GB partition?

Hehehehe... I think that is the fancy new-fangled "Firefox Self Destruct sequence" (yes, I've seen stuff like this before...in fact, just yesterday when an upgrade killed my Firefox).

Did Firefox just update itself? Were you somewhat "tight" on pupsave space? I've seen it update, and fail to do so because it ran out of space, then crash -- leaving you with neither the new version, nor the old one...

You probably need 60-80 MB free, before doing an upgrade -- if you're storing things inside your pupsave, you can move them outside to /mnt/home/ (which will be the same folder that your pupsave is located).

Clean up your pupsave a bit, install a recent version of Firefox, and try it again:

(Also note the "D-Bus" discussion -- I had to apply this to my 4.3.1 after I crunched my Firefox, and installed the above version).

As for the other programs, it's possible/probable that Firefox took out the library -- the question remains whether the reinstall will repair it, or if it is an incompatible library version (I'm guessing that it will repair itself).

But also go here to update your Flash, then try all of them again:

Note: from the command line, you should be able to run seamonkey, which you can use to access the web to get these packages.

No, the save file is only 1.7GB (because it says not to make it larger than 1.8). I just meant that it is alone on the partition. I was unsure how it would deal with having it's save file on an ntfs formatted partition, so I made the 3GB FAT32.

As it turns out, there doesn't seem to be an issue with NTFS and pupsaves. I did read recommendations that you scan for errors, and defrag the drive first, however.

I had also avoided it (as it did give a warning), but upon further reading, I have since moved my pupsave onto the NTFS partition on one of my laptops.

BTW, I store so much stuff outside my pupsave, that I'm running a (???) 448MB pupsave (haven't even reached 512MB yet) -- and I have about 100 MB free.

The one that crashed, was a 256MB that only had about 40-50 MB free...

(I keep different pupsaves, for different uses)

Seamonkey just did an automatic update on me to 2.0.10, and consumed almost all my pupsave in doing it (I was using a 64MB pupsave with about 40MB free). It was a security advisory. Perhaps Firefox got exactly the same fix? Getting automatic updates is an option in your browser preferences. Looks like it means you need to keep enough headroom if you are going to get those updates...

And it seems that Firefox needs even more room (between the downloaded bundle, and space to unpack).

To avoid that kind of headache, I installed Browsers like SeaMonkey and Firefox outside the save file, as well as the .mozilla directory.
Updates are done without problems and I have always the same browser environment for all the puppy's I use.

Ok, I've fixed it. Just had to uninstall firefox and flash player and clear some space - it's all working now.

BTW, what happens if you just delete the new Flash?

The new Flash also places itself outside the pupsave (into /mnt/home/flash(blahblah??)/), then links the library back inside. So the Flash upgrade actually reduces internal used space (replaces the old one inside, with the new one, symbolically linked to outside -- that's about 10MB).

The new Firefox .pet installs itself outside, which saves space. One should periodically open bookmarks/library and export your bookmarks (and/or copy the most recent .json file from bookmark backups). Then if you ned to rebuild your Firefox, you can just restore these and reinstall your plug ins.

I have also noted that the new Thunderbird .pet installs itself outside (which for me, actually breaks my Thunderbird configuration -- as I have custom configured various file locations and pushed my config files outside my pupsave, in a subfolder under my Email folder). However, I will soon migrate to this new system and go back thru the configuration for my multiple email accounts (re-setting all of these is the only reason I haven't migrated to the new patch). Note: Thunderbird is capable of upgrading in place, without this .pet -- but if you're starting from scratch, I would definitely use this new one.

BTW, I have only recently migrated upwards from a 256MB save file. I haven't reached 512MB yet (as I store everything possible outside). I just try to make sure I have 80-100 MB free inside (this also means migrating files saved inside, out to a storage drive).

With some care, there's no real reason to go that large (even 1.7GB is quite large)...

Yeah, well I didn't really read any of the documentation and I thought that programs could only run from the pupsave (as other drives had to be manually mounted), so now I know.
