dead keyboard

#1 Post by cbs »

The hyphen/underscore key in my notebook is not working forcing me to use an external keyboard. This is not convenient when I am traveling. I Would appreciate very much if someone could please tell me what are the codes that will generate these characters Abiword, or Geany or on the URL address bar.
Thanks in advance.

If you really want you can insert a unicode character in a GTK application by typing Ctrl+Shift+u, then the unicode character code, then space.
See e.g. http://unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0000.pdf) to find the character codes. Personally I think this is too slow except if you print out charts of the character codes and just use it for very rarely used symbols.

So you can insert an underscore by: Ctrl+Shift+u, 005f, space
and you can insert a hyphen by: Ctrl+Shift+u, 002d, space
But note that there is more than one type of hyphen ;)

I presume you've googled the notepad to see if there is an easy fix...

You should also use xev to see if the key has a keycode, in which case it should be easy to get working. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=44543

If it doesn't already have a keycode I think you should still be able to get it working... but I'm afraid my understanding of key mapping doesn't go any deeper than xmodmap.

Somebody here also wrote a program called pastelist, for storing frequently used text... I haven't tried it myself.

just create a text file with the needed characters within, and copy/paste them with the mouse when needed. Here, copy these: -_
