Can't make save file

#241 Post by Snail »

When I first booted my frugal usb v3, I was offered the choice of making a savefile which I declined. I did this several times and all of a sudden I stopped getting the option to create a savefile and all I get is a file not saved message. This is on the laptop. Using the same stick on my desktop does result in a make-savefile option. How can that happen? There is no savefile on this or any other usb device on the laptop, There is a 430 save on the harddrive but since PUPSTATE is 5, it doesn't appear to be finding it.

extlinux.cfg contains

default vmlinuz initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash pfix=copy,ram nosmp

I added the ",ram" but it had no effect.

I also noticed that if the Xorg-TEST procedure is not used on setup, there are a whole lot of red text messages about Xorg on shutdown. Xorg is working fine. Is there a way to slow down scrolling of boot and shutdown messages?

Snail,

It should be pfix=ram not pfix=copy, ram

More weirdness

#243 Post by Snail »

Smokey are you sure? I saw somewhere that multiple options for pfix, separated by commas was allowed. Copy and ram are both valid options for 4.30.

Continuing the saga of my pupsave file problem... Well, since I could still get the option of making the pupsave on the desktop, that is what I did. Took the stick back to the laptop and set it up and all works as it should. However, here is the really strange bit. If I now take the stick back to the desktop, the stick now fails.

Init starts and loads the modules for the drives. This then fails to find pup-432.sfs and it then drops out to the console.

dev_save is mounted on /mnt/Data1 but it is empty.

This is using the pupsave file that was originally created on this stick by this machine!

HELP!!

(Incidentally, the console shell is obviously not full Bash. What is the command to close down reasonably cleanly in this case? I am resorting to pulling the plug at present.)

Another oddity, not so critical as easily worked around. The symptoms may be relevant to diagnosing my otherreported problems however. When I initially booted puppy from the usb stick with the pupsave on it, I had an SD card with puppy but no pupsave on it sitting in the cardreader. In this case Puppy got really confused. It booted from the correct drive but then looked for the pupsave in the SD. Booting seemed normal for the no-pupsave case, but the yellow bubble was attached to the device icon for the SD, instead of the USB stick it actually booted from. (I am sure that it did boot from the stick, as the card reader cannot be booted from in this machine.)

Even more weird

#244 Post by Snail »

I got all excited because I attempted to boot the desktop for a third time and it worked perfectly. Alas it now seems that I can get it to boot only about one time in three. When it works it works, when it doesn't it always fails to the console after failing to load pup-434.sfs.

It seems that the idea of having a portable usb puppy won't work.

Maybe you have a faulty USB stick.

It wouldn't be the first. You could try reformatting it with Gparted.

As for the pfix command I have only used it with one parameter at a time but that doesn't mean you can't use more.

Just wanted to report resolving my earlier problem with seamonkey mail.

It was due to Seamonkey 2.0 being previously installed. When this was removed, 2.04 took over, and I haven't seen the problem return since.

New issue:

I also had Galculator installed from a .pet previously. This stopped working after upgrading to 4.3.2. I removed that .pet, and rebooted but Galculator then reported that GTK 2.1.x was missing. (The upgrade must have removed it) so I reinstalled GTK. However galculator still won't start.

When attempting to start it from terminal I get the following error message:

Code: Select all

(galculator:17470): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Segmentation fault
Galculator was working fine under 4.3.1. This was a straight upgrade to 4.3.2 v3

Weird USB

#247 Post by Snail »

Smokey01 I'm beginning to believe I've got a hardware problem, but it's a bit of an odd one. The stick always works with my laptop and fsck reports no problems. Nothing else seems to be unusual, except it may be slightly slow. The desktop works fine half the time and I've noticed no problems except on boot. Some type of timing problem on this not so new desktop? It's not ancient though, it came with XP on it.

Someone at our LUG suggested it may be worth restoring the stick to FAT, it's Ext2 at present, Anybody got any thoughts about that?

Snail I would try a different USB stick first. It shouldn't matter whether it's fat16, fat32, ext2 or ext3.

I must admit I prefer ext2 or at least that's what I am using. I have grub installed on the stick with four different versions of puppy. I think I used MBR on the stick for booting rather than the default option.

Seamonkey not rendering

#252 Post by Snail »

I have found that some pages render in 432 Seamonkey 2 that didn't with 430 Seamonkey 1. However this page doesn't work in 432 but does in 430:

http://rwpalmerstonnorth.co.nz/PNO20715

Ugly house isn't it?

Another Seamonkey issue is that the list of helper applications is very short and the Seamonkey website says that unlike Firefox it cannot be expanded. However the webpage does show a much longer list than I see on 432. Also, I would like to change my default search engine to one that is not on the shortlist of options. Is there any way to get around this?

I can't find any problem at all with Galculator in my fresh 432v3 installs. However, since Gnumeric loads instantly do we need it? I much prefer the visual feedback you get with a spreadsheet and the number of extra keys strokes required is small to none. There is an opportunity to save space here.

Seamonkey OOPS

#255 Post by Snail »

Hi Dave,

This is embarrassing, now it does for me as well. In my defense though, I did try multiple times, so it must have been a malfunction at the site. Next time I'll give it a couple of days to make sure before posting.

Abiword - docx problem

#257 Post by gjuhasz »

Abiword 2.8.2 forgets accented letters when writes file in docx format. They can be read/written in the rest of formats (doc, abw, rtf, pdf, ps, etc). However, Abiword well displays accented letters when reads docx files saved by other programs such as MS Office.

This problem appears in V3 and in lupu-008, too. UTF and hu_HU set.

ttuuxxx,

You did a great job!

On my 10 year old laptop Compaq Presario 14XL I currently have Puppy 4.1.1, therefore you can imagine my surprise in running 4.3.2 (test V3) on live disc! What a huge improvement!

Everything seems running smoothly, even if I believe it is a shame one cannot change Xvesa parameters.

I installed a couple of softwares for checking if things were OK. Xsudoky, Skype 2.0 and Opera 10 seem fine, but cannot understand what became of AirCrack... well, I never understood how it works.

I wonder if there is any specific reason for keep on preferring XArchive to the more versatile Xarchiver (+ p7zip and unrar).

Moreover, I saw Abiword can now read DOCX files, which is great, but sadly enough other Office2007 softwares do not seem to be covered by other Puppy 4.3.2 enclosed programs (Gnumeric). That is a pity because most spreadsheets around are in XLSX format and OpenOffice 3.x is way too heavy for my computer. Is there anything around for fixing the problem?

To the end, when I turn off the PC the system does not switch off the power… it never did, but this time does not even eject the CD!

Hope my comments could help

Thanks again!
