Ubuntu 9.10
Puppy/Ubuntu/Grub
Has anyone found a simple way to add Puppy to the new Ubuntu Grub? I am triple booting with Ubuntu Karmic Koala, Windows XP, and I did have Puppy on there. I did not attempt the online upgrade I wiped and did a clean install and it looks good to me. Grub found Windows XP and added it nicely. However when I logged on to the desktop there was a message telling me that I have over 300 bad sectors on my hard drive and it is failing.
I guess I will have to look into that now.

I have Mint7 on my P4,..and used my Debian DVDs to add the LXDE desktop to it. Seems to run pretty fast, with low ram usage (but not as good as Puppy or Vector). I think it's about as fast,..or faster than Xubuntu. It might be better to use Mint (has the missing commercial codec), though I can not confirm that.
It might also be worth consider using Xubuntu which requires less resources than the default Gnome.

Ubuntu 9.04 is still better then 9.10
I think, Grub2 is not a good idea, maybe look better but it takes a while just to get bootmenu.

Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix
I am very happy with Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix running on my EeePC901. Some great Netbbook features e.g windows are nearly always maximised, menu building is easy, very fast boot and amazing shutdown speds, suspend etc. Had to grapple with GRUB2 but with the help of another thread on this forum now have my Puppy's booting fine as well. I would be ecstatic though if I could get my scanner (Epson Perfection V200 PHOTO) and my USB TV tuner (Pinnacle e330) to work in either a Puppy or Ubuntu. So far no joy so unfortunately I still have to boot XP but I keep trying.

Have a look at my message down the page here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=45961 to be able to set up to boot into Puppy with Grub2.

Back in Puppy. after nearly two weeks of using Ubuntu part of the time.
Why?
Browser collapse (this I believe is due to Flash)
. . . uninstalling, reinstalling
trying Seamonkey, Flock, Konqueror browsers etc
and even attempting adding the flash .so file
from command line [shudder]
Enough
Back in a Browser with a full screen Flash 10
Back in Puppy 4.3.1
That works.
Works works for me.
I need my browser - at least.

Ubuntu 9.10 system requirements
Pardon me if this has been answered. I admit to not having read everything in the thread yet.
My primary frustration with Puppy has to do with security:
1. having to go online and do everything as root .
I know there's a fix for this, as I managed it once, long ago. But it was complicated, and I lost the description (is there a PET to fix this yet , I wonder?)
2. not being able to keep browser security current
3. messing up the system with pets that are inadequately documented, tested and/or supported.
4. being totally dependent on this forum to keep Puppy running.
I know from ample experience over the past year that posting for help anywhere else is just a waste of time.
Given the fragile economic/organizational structure of this community, it's a constant worry that the whole project may suddenly collapse at any time, leaving users without any support.
Secondarily, I dislike having to wait for a pet to be made of linux apps that interest me.
Are there any solutions to these problems?

In answer to your questions...
Q1. You don't have to go online as root...this has been covered quite extensively in the forum.
Q2. If you use Firefox or Opera they both auto update.
Q3. You can always talk to the contributor or developer of the pet.
Q4. That is the purpose of the forum.
Which hardware in particular does Puppy not support?
Maybe I can help you.
If there is not a pet available get a deb...or just ask.
Cheers

OK. What about Seamonkey? It asks if I want to update regularly. Is that a no-no?Q2. If you use Firefox or Opera they both auto update.
And they'll be willing and able to fix whatever is wrong ? Why don't I just call the tooth fairy?Q3. You can always talk to the contributor or developer of the pet.
I guess that point was too complex for you to understand?Q4. That is the purpose of the forum.
You can cut your teeth on the LS-120 Superfloppy if you like. Or, if you'd like something more cutting edge, the hama 35-in-one USB flash card reader.Which hardware in particular does Puppy not support?
Maybe I can help you.
get a deb? So any deb will work in any Puppy Linux, or is there more to it?If there is not a pet available get a deb...or just ask.

Q1...run browser as non-root
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/posting.php?p=353755
Q2...Don't know about older Seamonkey(have not used it), but version2 can be set to auto update...
Q3...Yes the vast majority of Puppy developers and contributors would help you out without a problem.
Q4...makes no sense really ...there are many thousands of Puppy users who never venture to the forum, and inexplicably their Puppies just keep working...
As for the LS-120, most modern kernels don't even ship with a module for it any more....I had an old copy of Redhat 6.2 (1998 I think) they worked in that. I do know for certain that they work in Debian Lenny 5.0.1, i've used them in Lenny, but they will not work if you update the Lenny kernel.
As for the HAMA 35 in 1...it just should work, I have a HAMA Traveldrive 20in1 and it works without any problems at all...There maybe other issues....
With regard to debs and Puppy, all the Woof built Puppies i.e Dpup, Upup, Ppup can use Debian/Ubuntu repositories and certainly in Dpup, the vast majority work without too much drama, if any....
Hope that helps

You talk arrogantly like alienjeff, you give a bad image of german people.
Totally agree with you, Linuxcbon...there is absolutely no need to have such an arrogant behaviour...this community is all volunteer-based, there is no economical return, everyone contributes for the pleasure to do something useful for him, or for others...I think this MUST be and remain the spirit that drives it.
Re: Banned?
there is a thread somewhere about itNotorik wrote:He was banned? Why? Yeah he was obnoxious, ill-informed, and probably just lazy (a 2 second search would have found Multiuser Puppy), but I don't understand why he was banned...
i don't understand either, but he must have gone above and beyond the call of, say, puppyite...
there once was a person of indeterminate gender and species [and planet of origin] here called shr**m*b** who i think was banned for, well, being batshit crazy [and inflicting it on others]
so it can happen...
[or maybe the mothership came back for him/her?]
Ah yes, ban the messenger...
If you can't offer an informed, or even an intelligent response to a question - launch an ad hominem attack on the person who asked it.
A common strategy of Puppy zealots, and probably the most important reason Puppy hasn't made more technical progress or become more popular.
How do you expect to find out what's going wrong, if you dump on anyone who reports a problem that doesn't have an obvious solution?

I don't see how...your URL returns an error page that says only:
"no post mode specified"
The default browser in the current Puppy 4.3.1 is Seamonkey 1.1.18Q2...Don't know about older Seamonkey(have not used it), but version2 can be set to auto update...
OK. You just don't get it...Q3...Yes the vast majority of Puppy developers and contributors would help you out without a problem.
And do you have some way of counting the number of Puppy users whose systems DIDN'T keep working, and who went to another distro or back to Windows?Q4...makes no sense really ...there are many thousands of Puppy users who never venture to the forum, and inexplicably their Puppies just keep working...![]()
In fact, I wonder how you know about these thousands whose "Puppies just keep working..." although they never venture onto the forum?
Well then, why does the Puppy Universal Installer still offer installation to LS-120?As for the LS-120, most modern kernels don't even ship with a module for it any more....I had an old copy of Redhat 6.2 (1998 I think) they worked in that. I do know for certain that they work in Debian Lenny 5.0.1, i've used them in Lenny, but they will not work if you update the Lenny kernel.
Excuses, excuses... You're batting ZERO.As for the HAMA 35 in 1...it just should work, I have a HAMA Traveldrive 20in1 and it works without any problems at all...There maybe other issues....
Update: further testing shows you may have guessed right about the hama USB reader . But I've got lots of other hardware support issues on my list:
serial (RS232) mouse
Brother MFC 8840D scanner, printer, etc.(not the only one)
PCMCIA-SCSI host adapter
PCI SCSI adapters
Pivoting monitors
... and probably several more I've long forgotten.
With regard to debs and Puppy, all the Woof built Puppies i.e Dpup, Upup, Ppup can use Debian/Ubuntu repositories and certainly in Dpup, the vast majority work without too much drama, if any....
Hey, I'm talking about Puppy Linux, and you're giving me advice that applies only to certain derivative versions.
You've made my point as to the perils of forum support.
Hope that helps
