I don't know about 4.21, but there are more drivers than in 4.1.2. The entire Gutenprint package (pre-relese of v5.2.4), with support for about 1300 printers.
That is interesting Barry. When I install a printer, work thru the dialogues to the point of choosing a driver (HP) this is all I have

Tiny but interesting point for re-mastering: if you use Dougals Remaster Script (Pupremaster), it creates a save file named pup_425.sfs, when it SHOULD be pup-425.sfs, note underscore instead of hyphen, so you will have to re-name. The inbuilt remaster system works fine.

OK, here is some weirdness: start menu>setup>CUPS printer wizard and select 'no' to adding a new printer. The Cups interface starts, and if you opt to add a printer from there, the drivers available are limited as per my previous post. BUT. Opt yes to install a new printer, and the CUPS interface that pops up is similar, but displays differently (fonts). From here, all the drivers are available! Is this a default viewer thing in CUPS_shell?

This is caused by LC_ALL.

Workaround:
modify /etc/profile and reboot.

like this (add the last line):

Code: Select all

#this line gets edited by chooselocale script...
#LANG=de_DE.utf8 w004 going back to non-utf8...
LANG=de_DE
export LANG
#MU: the next line avoids crashes with non US locale

OK, I think I have this............ by selecting 'yes' to add a printer, Gutenprint composes the printer drivers on the fly, and makes them available. After the printer is installed, I guess it deletes the unused drivers. During process save file goes from 245MB to 222, then back to 243 after installation. I guess by opting NOT to add a printer at the outset, the drivers were not composed, so not available. Very cool, but confused the heck out of me :)

Fist of all I have to thank you all for a great OS, it brings new life to my old HP Omnibook 6000 Pentium, 189 MB RAM.

I'm running Puppy 4.3 Beta 2 frugal install and every thing seems to work fine except my wireless connection.
Puppy doesn't recognize the card at boot up so I thought I would try to load the module manually but I can't seem to find the acx module that works for this card.

DESCRIPTION: Texas Instruments ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface
VENDOR: 104c DEVICE: 9066 KERNEL MODULE: unknown

The card works fine with a Puppy 4.2 full install using the acx_mac80211 module. I even managed to get it to work with WPA2 encryption after tampering a bit with the wizard :)

I'm also having some trouble to get the built in modem to work, Puppy won't recognize it either.
DESCRIPTION: 3Com Corporation Mini PCI 56k Winmodem
VENDOR: 10b7 DEVICE: 1007 KERNEL MODULE: unknown

Any suggestions how to solve these problems is very much appreciated.
Best regards
Torp
I wasn't able to compile the acx driver with the 2.6.30.5 kernel.

Maybe there's a later or a patched source somewhere that does compile. Anyone want to have a go at this?
The kernel SFS is at the usual place:

Partview won't run in frugal pup425

#88 Post by r__hughes »

In frugal pup425 I tried to install partview from a partview-4.1.pet
which had the following notes
--------------------------
Here is a pet that will install Partview to Puppy 4.1, or Puppy 4.0
It requires installatiion of:

It appears to install & insert a menu item but doesn't run from the menu.
Running from a terminal gives the following message:-

PPM not remove all empty directories

#89 Post by gyro »

Hi,

Running pup-425 as a frugal install on an NTFS partition.

I installed a test pet package that puts a number of files into "/root/dumy.icons/redcrystal/cursors/".
No files are stored in the directories "/root/dumy.icons/redcrystal/" or "/root/dumy.icons/".

When I uninstalled the pet package it removed the directory "/root/dumy.icons/redcrystal/cursors/" and all it's files.
But the empty directories "/root/dumy.icons/redcrystal/" and "/root/dumy.icons/" were not removed.

timremy & tlchost,
Thanks for your alsainfo postings. Now you see why I requested the results as an attachment, to take up less thread space. It turns out that the parts of use to us are in the first and last 120 lines. The fact that timremy has sound working in an application is encouraging. This tells me that the problem is not universal, in that it may be hardware specific. The alsainfo should help us in narrowing our focus.

Timremy points out, however, that the volume control on the taskbar is not responsive. That is beyond what I can take on, so could someone knowledgable of that program take a look at it, in case it is impacted by the ALSA-version change?

Zygo: Regarding your blog postings, thanks for your feedback on the HSF drivers:
Overshadowed by the miracle of my LCD working properly with Puppy 4.3b2, was the fact that for the first time it detected my PCI Conexant modem. However after dialing, pupdial reported "no carrier" and hung up. Any ideas?
3 does not detect the modem.
The modem was detected at /dev/ttySHSF0
vendor 13f6 device 2f00
This does not "add up". The IDs are not a valid combination, so it should not be detected. What does Pupscan say its IDs and driver are? In case your pupsave is an upgrade from 424, please probe>ERASE the modem settings in pupdial and reboot. (Or am I confused -- the ttySHSF0 was only in B2?) I don't believe there is any change in the HSF-modem stuff between betas, other than the driver modules should have been recompiiled for the new kernel. I assume Barry did that, as I did not work with them for 2.6.30.5. (I may be misremembering the sequence, but I thought I made the hybrid for 2.6.29.6. I'll have to review my beta1&2 postings.)

DaveS: Thanks for your modprobe.conf info. Apparently it shows a setup that does provide working sound. Is the SmartLink modem built into the board, or is it a separate PCI card or USB modem?
have HDA Intell giving sound on my system (I think)........
That is good news. would you confirm that and update your posting when you are sure? Please attach an alsainfo.tar.gz file so I can add yours to the list of working hardware. Thanks.

DESCRIPTION: 3Com Corporation Mini PCI 56k Winmodem
VENDOR: 10b7 DEVICE: 1007 KERNEL MODULE: unknown
The 3com winmodems are a problem. Only the "hardware" modems work with linux. Here is the story from those responsible for w/linmodem support:
From 2009:
Predictive diagnostics for card in bus 00:03.1:
Modem chipset detected on
NAME="Communication controller: 3Com Corporation Mini PCI 56k Winmodem "

0780 Communication controller: 3Com Corporation Mini PCI 56k Winmodem
Primary device ID: 10b7:1007
Support type needed or chipset: 3COM.winmodem
Under Linux 2.6.n kernels, the chipset is NOT SUPPORTED . Read DOCs/InfoGeneral.txt about alternatives.

----------------end Softmodem section --------------
Vendor 10b7 3COM Inc. purchased the vendor 12b9 US Robotics modem technology.
Their winmodems have no Linux support. Their controller chipset modems
are supported by the Linux serial drivers.
The PCI id 10b7:1007 modem is Not_Supported.

PCI ID Name Support status

10b7:1006 3COM 0038TA AC101 - TF Mini-PCI winmodem, not supported
10b7:1007 3COM 3C556 V.90 Mini-PCI winmodem, not supported
12b9:1006 US Robotics 3cp803598 Voice winmodem, not supported
12b9:1007 US Robotics ERL3263A-0 DF GWPCI PC99 winmodem, not supported

12b9:0062 US Robotics erk41926a-0.6 usr 56k serial driver supported
12b9:1008 US Robotics 3cp803598 serial driver supported
. . .

From 2005:
The answer is there in ModemData.txt below:
> Class 0780: 10b7:1007 Communication controller: 3Com Corporation Mini
PCI
> 56k Winmodem (rev 20)
identifies your modem, then
> 10b7 is 3COM
> :1006 0038TA <- AC101 - TF Mini-PCI 56K V.90 WinModem no Linux
> support
> :1007 3C556 V.90 Mini-PCI WinModem no Linux support
> 12b9 is US Robotics. acquired by 3COM
> :0062 erk41926a-0.6 usr 56k internal modem
> ;1006 3cp803598 Voice WinModem no Linux support
> :1007 ERL3263A-0 DF GWPCI PC99 WinModem no Linux support
> :1008 3cp803598 is Supported by the standard: serial.o
tells you that, sadly, there is no support for 10b7:1007

3Com / U.S.Robotics (same thing) do not supply the minimal software
and/or information needed to make a Linux driver.
Jacques
richwa4sxz: Thanks for your explanation (via PM) of the HDA situation:
Subject: snd-hda-intel problems
I have been running the snd-hda-intel with a realtek chipset for a couple of years. 4.3b3 is working fine. These problems are almost always chipset specific. Ubuntu has had a problem in the 9.04 distro with ALSA not working at all, but Pulseaudio works so I use that. . . .
Fantastic work you've been doing on these drivers, BTW.
That is encouraging, as is your supportive comment.

sfl7fl: Thanks for your alsainfo (in next posting).

I continue my attempt at merging the latest HDA-driver code into a dotpet for those with sound issues.

It puzzles me as to why those of us with SiS and certain other chipsets/HW still don't have proper shutdown. This, in spite of a fellow Aussie, gray, implementing his fix in both NOP and BOX. Every other distro does it, so why not Puppy?

Mark,
I'm a little bit worried about doing this when the 4.3final is so close. Adding 'export LC_ALL=en_US' after the 'export LANG' line, doesn't bother me as I use en_US anyway, I don't even bother to use en_AU.

As far as I know, LC_ALL just sets some values, e.g. currency settings.
E.g in germany, you write:
1,49 US$
In the USA:
1.49 US$
So germans use a comma instead of a dot.
As far as I know, such things are managed by LC_ALL.

Non english speaking people can live with a dot instead of a comma in gnumeric for example, but they cannot live with a complete english system, or worse, with crashes using their native language.
So I urgently suggest to set LC_ALL.
You might add a condition, that it is just explicitly set, if a LANG is used, that does not start with "en_".

It would be great to find out, why LC_ALL with the german setttings crashes, but I have no idea, what might be the reason.

hmmm..... I'm wrong...
http://opengroup.org/onlinepubs/0079087 ... nvvar.html
LC_ALL
This variable determines the values for all locale categories. The value of the LC_ALL environment variable has precedence over any of the other environment variables starting with LC_ (LC_COLLATE, LC_CTYPE, LC_MESSAGES, LC_MONETARY, LC_NUMERIC, LC_TIME) and the LANG environment variable.
Ok, so I must find out, which of those causes the crashes...
I'll report back later.

This says you were not running on the new beta3 (425). Please test on the latest beta, with our new kernel. Thanks.

DaveS: Thanks for your alsainfo. I'm pleased to hear it "just works". I think I will collect the HDA_codec_xxx names from these reports, to look for a pattern.

ok, got it.

You do not need to set LC_ALL.
It is LC_COLLATE
LC_COLLATE
This variable determines the locale category for character collation. It determines collation information for regular expressions and sorting, including equivalence classes and multi-character collating elements, in various utilities and the strcoll() and strxfrm() functions. Additional semantics of this variable, if any, are implementation-dependent.
Btw. I found one interesting thing.
Even though LC_ALL has precedence over LANG, my german Abiword still runs german with LANG=de_DE and LC_ALL=en_US.
It should be english in theory, if LC_ALL has a higher priority than LANG.

But to sum it up:
in /etc/profile, this should be set:
LC_COLLATE=en_US

I don't think it will have serious negative sideeffects, but allow to switch to different languages without crashes (what would make Puppy unusable in most countries).

also the first lines returned by lsmod:
