Desktop Not Loaded

#21 Post by tlchost »

Created a bootable USB with this version. When system reboots, desktop does not appear, but cli prompt does.

Sometimes you can enter xwin to get to the desktop, other times the system is frozen.

filemanagers like Muppyfiler crash, if a non US locale is set.
This is caused by LC_ALL.

Workaround:
modify /etc/profile and reboot.

like this (add the last line):

Code: Select all

#this line gets edited by chooselocale script...
#LANG=de_DE.utf8 w004 going back to non-utf8...
LANG=de_DE
export LANG
#MU: the next line avoids crashes with non US locale
export LC_ALL=en_US
Hmm, why was UTF8 dropped again? :(
I missed the reason.

First impressions:
extremly fast system, the theme is the best Puppy ever had - absolutely amazing :D

Theme...

I started the whole superpup thing with a theme based on clouds (and a podgy looking superpup flying through them!)... the original windows 98 clouds.. As a matter of course CatDude improved on my effort and superpup evolved...

It was of course a joke but things seem to have traveled full circle.. in more ways than one; cloud computing anyone?

Now the 4.3 theme is still with clouds, not that there is anything wrong with that!

IMHO, go for the JebaJQ8 cloud image posted in the wallpaper thread, while ttuuxxx sticks to compiling!

It was reported that if the "Enable screensaver" checkbox is unticked, the screen still gets blanked.

Yeah, I don't know why.

pupX creates /root/.xset.sh, which gets executed in /root/.xinitrc.
All seems ok, except that the "s off" parameter has no effect. Weird.

Shouldn't it be

Code: Select all

xset s off -dpms
to prevent blanking of screen, not only "s off" but also "-dpms"

really everybody knows that water images should have a rippled mirror effect, well unless its really muddy. Anyways I've more than proven my graphic capabilities in the past, the quick 8kb post above is what it was, quick! still amazed at the size for 1024x768. Anyways mick its IMHO that your off course on that statement.

After seeing a thread about older pc's and the newer kernel versions of Puppy I dug out my old Pavilion w/ a powerful 433 mhz Celeron.Posting right now on it from 4.25 Beta 3 running live.

Booted w/ no problem and actually seems pretty snappy.

Back to my other box for further testing.

[SOLVED] CUPS detects Canon S520

#28 Post by r__hughes »

edit 17sep09
This issue has been solved - I should have accessed cups via Menu/System/Cups instead of http://localhost:631/ this starts cups_shell which brings in a whole slew of drivers. Please see
message by 8-bit circa 16sep09
------------------------------------------------------------------------

In frugal pup425, Cups detects my attached Canon S520 Parallel printer but doesn't let me install it. It is shown as Device: Parallel port#1 (Canon S520) but the Model/Driver shows NO Canon printers & no option to navigate to a ppd

The Canon S520 is listed in /usr/share/gutenprint/5.2/xml but I can't seem to attach it -- any ideas.

PS
In frugal pup421, CUPS installed a native Canon S500 driver for my S520 printer. worked beautifully. It was automatically detected by the system if the printer was attached - or - manually selected via Device LPT#1 from then on I could see and select Make/Manuf: Canon then Model/Driver:Canon S500

Try running Htop on both and look at your free memory applet and thats where the real difference is.
Still cool you have it running on a 433 :)

this is really the greatest Puppy I tried so far :!:

Even is very quick on my old Toshiba Portege Subnotebook 3440, it has a Pentium 500 with only 128 MB Ram.
I described it here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=25241

The savage graficschip is detected correctly.
The xircom module for the network PCMCIA card was offered as module in the network wizard.
Puppybrowser starts in 10 seconds, seamonkey also very fast for this old computer.

Gxine scales videos even without installing xorg_dri.
But it seems to need less resources, if you install that.
I just had to decrease the color-depth of the display from 24 to 16 in xorg.conf to be able to use DRI with only 8 MB of videoram.

I'm truly amazed...

D-Link DWL-G650+ not working in Puppy 4.3 b3

#31 Post by Torp »

Hi all.

Fist of all I have to thank you all for a great OS, it brings new life to my old HP Omnibook 6000 Pentium, 189 MB RAM.

I'm running Puppy 4.3 Beta 2 frugal install and every thing seems to work fine except my wireless connection.
Puppy doesn't recognize the card at boot up so I thought I would try to load the module manually but I can't seem to find the acx module that works for this card.

DESCRIPTION: Texas Instruments ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface
VENDOR: 104c DEVICE: 9066 KERNEL MODULE: unknown

The card works fine with a Puppy 4.2 full install using the acx_mac80211 module. I even managed to get it to work with WPA2 encryption after tampering a bit with the wizard :)

I'm also having some trouble to get the built in modem to work, Puppy won't recognize it either.
DESCRIPTION: 3Com Corporation Mini PCI 56k Winmodem
VENDOR: 10b7 DEVICE: 1007 KERNEL MODULE: unknown

Any suggestions how to solve these problems is very much appreciated.
Best regards
Torp

Yeah, joking

However, the reflection you did didn't seem right... I wouldn't go as far to say it would scare the kids!.. (someone else said that!)

@veronicathecow
Pcur does not offer me any cursor choices.
Did you download the cursor themes from the PPM? There is a note saying to do that but you may have missed it.

I think Pcur should include a button for that: "download additional cursor themes" or "start the puppy package manager"

Hi

This is the best puppy yet - running manual frugal, ext2 on 7yr old laptop and even older BookPC (91mb ram, 400MHz celeron proc. 241mb swap) and it runs very well.

Everything seems good - only 1 very minor niggle (view button in Nathon wallpaper changer not working).

This is truly a superb puppy.
Very many thanks to BK and all concerned for this masterpiece.

As always - very best regards - Ray.

Hi RayMK

Yes, the Nathan wallsetter does have that minor bug.

Fix:

In /root/.config/wallpaper/preferences change line 5 to

Code: Select all

VIEWER="viewnior"
...was fotoxx

Cheers

Sure it is not a debian (sidux) bug?

It was discussed here on the sidux forums. http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-17748.html

Both xorg and xvesa fail on my Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop

VGA controller is Intel 82845G/GL chipset.

Will try it on my main puppy machine and see if that goes better.
