Alpha 3.1 3builddistro is flagging many execute flag errors in /lib and /usr/lib. An example:

.ldd: warning: you do not have execution permission for `/usr/lib/libcap.so.1.10'

If I correct the flagged files and re-run 3buliddistro, the script re-creates those files with execute flag turned off and the errors appear again.

That's not an error. Shared library files often do have the execute flag set. It's just that 'ldd' is now (in Arch anyway) deciding to tell us about it.

Alpha 3 and 3.1 3builddistro reports the following AND those in the attached.

/usr/bin/sylpheed: /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/sylpheed)
/usr/bin/sylpheed: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/sylpheed)

To my knowledge, these are warnings only, do not prevent the application from running.

I've had the same problem. I think this happens if there are other .2fs files readable.
On my EeePc900 I booted from USB and got the usual message 'Type a number to choose which personal file to use' ( I have several pup_save files on SDHC card). If I use '0' for no file, at the end of the session there is no question for saving to a file.
Next I put out the SDHC card, booted again from USB, no .2fs file was available, and voilá, at the end of my session the dialog for saving to a file was there.
Btw. the prefix is 'upupsave.2fs'.

Yes, there is an issue that needs to be resolved here.

If you do the first boot with 'pfix=ram', all is well. I guess I haven't really noticed the problem that you describe, as I always do a first boot with 'pfix=ram'.

upupsave.2fs it was.
I used a small pup_save I had and emptied and renamed it.
Altho configuration like keyboard and network sticks, I have not the initial desktop icons any more.

I should revisit the save file issue.

I tried to have openoffice loaded at boot time, but it doesn't load.
Don't know if it's supposed to work already.
The scroll wheel of the mouse isn't working either.

I'm running upup 015 iso live cd on my 9-year old machine, on which I have to put in acpi=force at bootup if I want the m/c to shut down without use of the power button. But with upup, it shuts down! Has Barry cracked the problem at last??

Using upup-015, I downloaded and installed KDE4.2 with only two errors. When I rebooted Woof, KDE4.1's startup screen appears asking for the user name and password which, of course had never been set. My only out was to shutdown and delete the pup save file. I was amazed that I was actually seeing the KDE4.2 boot up screen on pup and that I was able to download and install it. Woof really has potential.

Any ideas as to how to get past the user name and password prompts? This will probably be a problem regardless of which desktop is chosen, since setting up the user and password is normally part of the installation procedure for Ubuntu.

For you guys trying Intrepid Puppy and experiencing what seem like Xorg-related problems (like it freezing when click on icons), try tronkel's Debian Lenny build, as that has Xorg 7.3 (Ubuntu Intrepid has 7.4, which has many issues).

Even with pfix=ram I don't get that panel with the question if I want to save the configuration.

I have this issue from the 4.XX on and had reported it.
It's probably due to my way of preparing a new install, as I don't want to burn a CD/DVD/ anymore.

I use the Lin'N'Win method.

So for a new release, I create a directory on my ntfs partition.
I mount the new iso and copy all the files to that directory.
I adapt menu.lst to reflect the new installation.

If I boot from the new installation, I never get the question to save the configuration to create a new save file.
Mu advised me on a method to create an empty save file with a certain size, as I had this problem first in one of his muppy's.

As I didn't get a solution for this I continued this principle.
In spite that in PUPSTATE it's indicated that I have pupmode 5 (so as if I boot from a CD on first boot) I don't get the panel to make a save file. Instead I get the message Session not saved, period.

It annoys me, but I learned to live with it.

I apologize for not retaining better what I read in your blog.
But my interest in upup is, that it's the first linux version, which sees and supports my second e-sata connected HDD in my Medion8818 PC.

Will give dPup a try, uPup froze on three of my Compaqs (D510 USDT, D530 SFF, D530 USDT). On my D330 it ran fine, but that's the only one NOT using the onboard Intel video card but a GeForce 5900.

I saw the comment about the sfs files, the old ones not being supported in the new version of squashfs.

So I wonder

1 - Is/will there be a conversion program?

or

2 - Could one mount the sfs in another puppy, copy the directory structure to a place accessible in upup and do a mksquashfs in upup to create a new version squashfs?

Running Tronkel's dpup, live cd. Does the package manager allow me to install a deb package that I have already downloaded (my Canon printer driver) and which I keep handy in the home folder? If not, I've also got it converted to a pet, so I assume the usual pet install still works.

And a hurrah!- the symlink libtiff.so.4 to whatever libtiff is present is included now- printer driver needs it.

Next: samba. Which bits of Samba do I need to try installing to access shares and printer on Windows XP machine? Or is it too soon?

Tried "root" and "woofwoof" and got the same error message. "A critical error occurred. Please look at KDM's logfile(s) for more information or contact your system administrator."

I've tried a manual frugal install to USB.
Didn't try a lot with it, but noticed that clicking on some icons did not get a response. Eg I wanted to modify rclocal, but clicking on it did nothing, neither did right right clicking and selecting 'open as text'. I could open Leafpad and load into that though.

So I did the plunge for option 2
With upup I created a sqhashfs, which had been 'unsqhashed' in puppy 4.2.
The squashfs was created, but still it don't mount.
Maybe something else is at stake.

BTW, I downloaded and installed Pidgin 2.5.2 from the Intrepid repository and it works.

I`ve tried to woof isos so far sp-011. and upup-015.
Downloaded burnt to cd and used for full install.
In both cases the grub bootloader configuration failed to complete after the disc drive opened. I typed in MBR expecting the drive to reinsert itself and complete the installation of grub, but instead it does nothing and the desktop window asks if i would like to rerun or finish the install.
either way menu1st does not get copied accross and so canot boot from hard drive.
I have need for printing as the 4.2 series distros are not working for me regarding hpdeskjet710c printer on parallel port. The 4.11 distro using Cups 1.1.xx is ok.
