wow, i must have been tired this morning, cuz that last post makes no sense.
ok. the main issue is that some of my icons and menu items dont work. i click on lock and nothing happens. and if i try to open the alsa sound config i get nothing. i dont know why this is happening.
and for some reason when i empty the trash or delete things i get a dog barking sound and if i turn the volume down, it still plays at the same volume.
the only other problem im having is trying to install puppy linux on my little sisters laptop. she has an acer aspire and it only gets to the booting kernal line and it sits, not really sure why or what to do there.

is there a way to do like a puppy checkup and set anything thats not working correctly back to working correctly? im not talking about stuff i installed, but like if the lock feature isnt working, somehow set it back to default and working?
also, is there a way to set xine back to defaults? and if so is it just to reinstall it and it'll fix its self? it was part of the pupplet package so it doesnt show up to be uninstalled in the package manager

Configuration to stop trash-bin barking?
Is anybody aware of how to set configuration to stop the trash bin barking? I understand that deleting the sound files can chop off the sound, but I was thinking of a more elegant solution, like an option to turn it on or off.Bruce B wrote:Looks like these are the files you can delete or rename if you don't want any barking
Delete as Few Barks as Possible
I found, actually, that the sounds in "sounds" don't affect the trash barking issue. Only the sounds in "audio" matter. Also instead of deleting the directory (feels destructive and irreversible), I simply renamed the "audio" directory to "audio-quarantined".Bruce B wrote:Looks like these are the files you can delete or rename if you don't want any barking
[/usr] find . -name *bark*
./share/audio/2barks.au
./share/audio/2barks.wav
./share/audio/bark.au
./share/sounds/2barks.au
./share/sounds/bark.au
[/usr]
I still would love to find a proper on/off configuration for silence. Puppy or any other OS will never be used in "professional" or "business meeting" settings if sound cannot be muted. At the same meeting, I need to be able to show a video *with* sound. I just need to turn off the more "goofy" things. Or, as a politeness issue, when my wife is sleeping in the morning, it would be good to know that Puppy can remain silent when deleting files.
I expect someone will advise to simply turn off the speaker volume. However, that can be forgotten. It's better to have a software switch toggle to enable / disable sounds.
All the best,
1. I've installed this copy/version of Xfe.
I never hear barks when I delete items using this Xfe [SUPERB 3-pane file explorer; I love it].
2. I have both ROX and Xfe, and can choose which to use for certain activity [seldom use ROX].
3. "some menu items in general, don't open"
Try running the program[s] using a command in a console.
A Problem may then be reported, and you can attempt a fix.
4. "no menu item for conky... how do i add one?"
Install Menu Entry Maker, and use it to add a menu entry for conky.
