I can not configure my videocard in Puppy 4.00 using Xorg. XVesa is fine, and Puppy 2.17 on the same system works fine with Xorg. However, when I choose Xorg in 4.00 my screen goes into powersave mode.
System is a Compaq 510 USDT, Intel 845G chipset. Any help would greatly appreciated.
Problem with Puppy 4.00 with Intel 845G video and Xorg

One reason to have two X servers.Martin wrote:I can not configure my videocard in Puppy 4.00 using Xorg. XVesa is fine, and Puppy 2.17 on the same system works fine with Xorg. However, when I choose Xorg in 4.00 my screen goes into powersave mode.

Look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf read the comments, see what's enabled,
see if there is something you can disable. Would be helpful to compare it with xorg.conf from version 2.17 (I suspect)
Disable screen saver as shown in picture below.
As for me I cripple some of the powersaving features in BIOS and
kernel line. I blacklist the apm module.
Bottom line is my screen doesn't go blank, it just turn the monitor off
when done.
I also don't have an Intel video adapter, and have no way of
verifying what if any of my advice will help. Please accept it that
way.

As a last resort Xvesa is not all that bad.

With Xorg I never get to this point. Maybe my description of the problem isn't too clear, the thing is that when using the Xorgwizard, choosing Xorg only results in a black screen. Choosing Xvesa, all is fine.Disable screen saver as shown in picture below.
I'll have a look at both conf files.
The Intel 810 Video system did not have a driver in Dingo and caused strange effects with Xorg.
This sounds similar, although the effect is different.
You can find how I solved the Intel810 problem at:

Just in case it helps.

Thanks, this sounds promising. I'll give it a try, I'll let you know how it worked out.ICPUG wrote:The Intel 810 Video system did not have a driver in Dingo and caused strange effects with Xorg.

I'm glad it helped.
The driver was not in Dingo because Barry didn't put it in.
Whether this was by accident or design I do not know. To answer that one, I guess I should try one of the 4.1 alpha releases and see if it is still left out.
One thing Puppy users need to be aware of is that the prime branch developed by Barry is always 'in development' and this sort of thing can happen at any time.
Despite some people being very vocal against this approach, Barry has made it quite clear that this is how he likes to develop and this is how it will be. You either accept that, stick with a Puppy that is stable enough for you, or develop your own stable puplet.
