I downloaded the file recommended by gorlewskik a few days ago, then used tgz2pet as recommended by vern72023.
The install did not happen automatically, I had to find the .pet file and install it.
Anyway, I now have a computer with Puppy and wine, and in my hand a CD with MS software. Despite reading all I can on the WINE HQ site, and this forum, I can't work out:
How do I marry the CD contents with WINE?
They seem to suggest that the CD should be installed somewhere, like root, but how to do anything at all with it, because ROXfiler can only see an empty CD.
And to run WINE I need to put in the real program name- that is not obvious from the box cover.
It's just a mess!!

How to use WINE??
no expert here, but I remember in Hacao Puppy, there's an interface to WINE called WineXS.
Using it, I installed Windows software from an installer file very easily. I don't know about installing from CD.

Installing wine
Dear Gerry,
I am glad that the download link in my other post was of use to you. But I am confused? Did you have success? It seems you have installed wine okay, but you have not reported on if you were able to get your application to appear in its full beauty.
Concerning the slackware package for wine available in their repository, I find it strange that you were not able to extract the .tgz file using the archiver that comes builtin with Puppy 3.01. That was something I was able to do, but the tgz to pet application you mentioned seems superior to my solution. However I was able install it to the base of everything using the built in archiver in Puppy 3.01
As far as wine being easy or a (mess)? I think that will all come with various levels of knowledge and I for one, thought that wine was a wonderful thing and this package was a god send after all the time I spent trying other packages. I found it easy to install. Is it a mess? I don't think so. If you downloaded a utility to convert tgz to pet and that was all you had to do to install it, that sounds wonderful. I am interested in that utility to. Thanks for mentioning it. I see this all as a collaboration between interested individuals. I am glad that you were able to write about your experiences and I learned something from you: the pet to tgz utility. I hope also to read the documention about wine in the puppy wiki page which is something that I had not done yet.
Take your time to familiarize yourself with the wine documentation. And also feel free to respond further here if you have any difficulties. Usually to run a run a program, you use the command from your console, subsituting the example path below with your own.
wine "C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe"
By the way, I got Internet Explorer to work with wine under Puppy. It is something that you have to install from a 3rd Party, IES4Linux, but that is a different story.
You can run many windows applications with wine in puppy. The ones I use are NoteTab Lite, a powerful text processor and also Irfanview Image Viewer.
Setting up shortcuts is something that I haven't done yet for Puppy Linux 3.01, but I will post here when I learn how to do it. There must be an easy way to do this, but I have not figure out how.
I hope that other people will have an easier time of it. I hope you are doing well. But don't give up.
