Bad power supply is the problem

#1 Post by bigpup »

This is some information about bad power supplies.

I have a desktop computer that started to do very strange things.

Suddenly shutdown.
Operating system would lock up.
Programs would run, but suddenly stop or shutdown.
Computer would boot OK.
Then the next time, halfway boot or boot to a locked desktop.
Boot to a point and then just shutoff. Never the same place twice.
Etc.......
Really strange stuff.

The bad hardware, causing all of this, was the power supply.
Replaced power supply.
No more problems.
Actually I think the computer runs better.
The bad power supply, was the original one, for this name brand computer.
Computer manufactures, usually go for the lowest price power supply, that will work.
Minimum everything.

Well, the new power supply is higher in quality.
Higher power ratting. Went from 450W to 600W.
Major name brand power supply manufacture.
Got it for $40 weekend sale price.

I know for sure, the power supplies, they make for computer manufactures, are no way the same quality as the ones they make to sale after market.
Lets see. I make a power supply to put into a production computer, that will never go bad.
I guess not too many people are going to have a need to buy my after market power supplies.

Power supplies do go bad and do not always just stop working.

Hope this helps others.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Just to add my two-penn'orth, I replaced mine around 3 years ago.....on principle.

The old Compaq desktop tower belonged to my sister before I had it, and dates back to around 2004. It was nearly 11 yrs old when I 'acquired' it, and a year down the line, in the middle of a spate of upgrading several other items of hardware, I realised that the PSU is the one thing we all seem to take for granted.

The original was supposed to have been rated for 300W, but testing with a multimeter showed that barely 200W was in fact available. It was 'cheap'n'nasty', and promptly got replaced with a brand-new CoolerMaster B50 500W single-rail model.

I'd rather be safe than sorry.....

These are good reminders... In fact my netbook PSU is also 11 years old. I have a spare that cost about US$12.
