Rez problem update
Since no one responded I did some experimenting with this. If I connect my monitor directly to the Puppy system, and boot Puppy from power on, it comes up in 1920x1080 native mode as expected. Then while Puppy is still running, if I remove the VGA cable from the system and connect using the switch, ...

Video rez problem
I just added a new 4 port KVM switch because I added a 3rd system (2 previously). I have Win XP and Win 7 Pro which both run at full 1920x1080 (LCD) going thru the switch, but my 3rd system running Puppy Precise 5.7.1 will no longer allow rez beyond 1024X768. All 3 systems are Dell SFF Optiplex type...

Seamonkey crashing on 525
I've noticed frequent crashes of Seamonkey (v2.0.14) since installing Lupu525. My resources don't seem to be stretched as far as CPU meter and disk space are concerned, but Seamonkey will arbitrarily crash at times. Then occasionally after relaunch, I've seen it render a webpage for perhaps 5 or 10 ...

Cinelerra in 5.2 crashes when it tries to open an mp4 file
I installed Cinelerra from Quickpet. It places the utility windows on the screen; i.e. Editor, viewer, compositor, etc., but as soon as I open an MP4 file it totally bails with no error message or warning - you are simply put back to the desktop! I have viewed all the tutorials on the web and this s...

Geany projects
Trying to use Geany to create programming projects in C. I am having trouble including files into the project and/or knowing which files Geany presumes are even in the project (if any)? In other words... 1) Is it enough to simply create a project folder then copy all your files into the folder, or d...

How to make a screen saver in Linux?
I've written some screen savers in the past and would like to port a few to Linux. Does anyone know how, or can you hook me up with a tutorial or example?

Yep, looks pretty cool, but now the spacing is too great. If you are familar with the launchbar (wbar), there are lots of parameters on the line inserted into the xinitrc script that control icon size, spacing, etc. It seems there almost has to be something similar that sets up the main desktop scre...

Desktop icons
Does anyone know how to reduce the size of icons globally, or is there even such a feature? In particular, I'd like to make the desktop icons smaller. I tried ROX options and it seems you can only change the size for the filer and menus, but not the desktop.

OK, solved it, er, well sorta... I just copied the old xorg.conf file from the ISO CD to the flash and now it's working OK again. Does anyone have any idea why the xorg file could have changed on the flash drive to the point where the screen would no longer center? It almost seemed like my monitor s...

Oh man, I had this problem a few months ago and now it has come back. Here's the jest of it... I installed 5.2 on a flash drive and it was working fine. I then pushed the auto adjust button on my LCD and now can't get the screen to center anymore. The puppy desktop screen is now oriented to the left...

What if you relaunch the same app tho? Many of the pages might still be valid and thus not need to be reloaded again. It's probably a similar methodology to flushing cache; i.e., why make the effort until you need to? Reclaiming memory resources can be handled as new data comes in, and doesn't take ...

OK, I did it. I couldn't find a 64meg DDR (did they ever even make them that small in DDR?), but I did find a 128meg stick and tried that. I had to load up quite a few apps on both desktops, but finally the system began using the swap space, and of course, things began slowing way down after that. F...

Installing devx_520
I am trying to install devx_520.sfs (already downloaded) on my Lupu520 full install system. In the mnt directory, home is a symbolic link back to / (root). When I place the devx file in mnt/home, it of course, ends up back in / since the directory is circular. The boot manager then reports that it c...

1) Does more swap space improve (or degrade???) performance? I calculate over a period of time what is my worst case scenario, then make the space somewhat larger than that. If that's how I do it, it must be that I think having an excess of swap is of no value. I can't image how it would be advanta...

Thanks for the all opinions and explanations. Memory has become cheap since early years and I'm not sure if the same MMU methods are employed anymore. My first system was a DEC VAX-11/780. I remember it only having 8meg of physical memory, but perhaps 100meg of virtual memory. Back then, it would ha...

Swap space questions
In Htop I see my swap space, but no activity in spite of how many apps I try to run concurrently, so I have some general questions about swap... 1) Does more swap space improve (or degrade???) performance? 2) Is it enough to simply create a swap partition (formatted ext2 swap) in Gparted, or does li...
