xorg config
I just acquired a free eMachines eM250 netbook with a bad HD. I replaced the SATA HD and successfully installed LUPU. One problem though is my synaptic touchpad seems overly sensitive to tapping; i.e., it opens folders and apps by simply dragging the cursor across them, which is very annoying. I've ...

One last thing... Running the Raytracing benchmark indicates 58 seconds on the dual core, whereas the reference Celeron is about 41 seconds (i.e., the dual core is slower). I actually measured this with a stopwatch just to make sure nothing was skewed in software. I also checked with BIOS to make su...

Haha, although a bit cynical, Ralph has some points. In fact, I was just talking about this to a friend the other day. My first store bought computer (I built 2 homebrews before that) was a Cromemco Z1 4mhz 8bit system with 64k. It ran CDOS, a modified version of CPM. The entire OS was about 7 or 8k...

A Celeron M is twice as fast as a Pentium given the same clock speed??? I hope you have some independent benchmarks to support that, especially since Celeron M was enhanced with larger cache so that laptops could compete with desktop P4s. At the very MOST, they would be on par given the same cache s...

OK, here's another puzzling one... Just for comparison, I booted Lupu on my AMD system. It is an Athlon X2 7850 2.8Ghz dual core with 3 level cache. I pulled a memory stick and made it 1 Gig RAM just to match my Pentium system more closely. While all the benchmarks win over the standard 1.5Ghz Celer...

2.6GHz P4 benchmarks barely faster than 1.5GHz Celeron
I just upgraded my Lupu 5.1.1 hardware to a P4 805 - 2.66Ghz dual core with 2X1meg L2 caches. When I run the benchmarks under the System Information utility, my CPU shows only marginally faster (actually the Ray Tracing shows I'm slower) than the standard 1.5Ghz Celeron reference CPU??? Even if the ...

Simple font editor?
Does anyone know of a simple pixel map font editor or even a grid drawing proggie that can be used for font design? I am trying to build a simple bitmap font to run on a scrolling LED array type display under control of an Atmel micro.

One thing I have noticed in HardInfo 0.5.1 is that the graph bars are not proportional to the resultant numerical data. I did not notice this in the older HardInfo function of say Pup 4.12. I just tried Puppy 4.3 on 5 or so different CPU/mobo combinations and the visual graphs are obviously incorrec...

OK, just to close this out, I'm good (uhhh screenwise I mean, I'm not implying my morals have changed... moohoohahaha!) My solution: I substituted an old Biostar M7VIB mobo I had laying around wondering whether to throw out. Then I plugged in a dirty old ATI Rage 32meg AGP viddy, and I am up-n-runni...

Thanks Patriot, I did the grepping and it reports that the chipset is actually a VIA km400. I will do some checking into openchrome and see what I can uncover. The CPU/RAM are Athlon 1800 with 512M. I looked in Xorg.0.log. There is a lot of stuff in there that I don't understand, but somewhere appro...

The round icons seem to be slightly eliptical, but it's hard to tell since the two resolutions are close. Mostly I can tell by looking at pictures of human faces which seem to be slightly horizontally elongated compared to my Windows system. I run both systems simultaneously on the same KB, mouse, &...

Real screen rez?
While installing Pup4.30 to HD, Xorg asked me what screen rez I desired. I entered 1680x1050; the native resolution of my 22 inch monitor. However, things didn't look quite right when viewing pictures, so I decided to investigate... When I look in HardInfo, it tells me I am at 1600x1200. When I try ...

Well, here's some wisdom from an old (relatively anyway - LOL) retired test enggie. Never confuse a symptom with the actual underlying problem. In this case (no pun), it sounds like there is a connectivity problem in the drive connector. It may manifest itself more in Puppy for whatever reason (more...

I had a similar problem recently that ended up being the HD itself. It turns out the drive had sectors that were going bad, but weren't quite fully bad yet. Remember, that disk data is ultimately analog at the magnetic domain level. This means that individual bit strength may vary somewhat from bit ...

Hmmm, so far these numbers are quite interesting as some systems seem to be faster at certain tasks and slower at others. Also, I suspect the multicore machines are not utilizing their potential in the tests. I'm not sure what ZLib does, but I get fairly wide variation of about 15000 to 18000 on tha...
