I'm inclined to be in favor of Release Candidates... I don't think we can know the future. So we don't really know that 1.0.9 will be the "end of the line". But please don't go to 1.0.10 -- it is logical, but I fear it confuses people. 1.1.1 might be bettter...

96MB not enough to boot Puppy on PMMX-266 laptop?

I tried to boot Puppy 1.0.8r1 on a laptop with 96MB. I was surprised that 96 was not enough to load Pup all into RAM -- it just tried to fallback to running from CD. I can understand that RAM would have been rather tight, without enough left to do much real work, but I would have rather been given a...

(The problem is not that there is something "really" wrong with the CDs being burned. The problem is that there are "issues", which are so complex they took me days of research/struggle to understand -- and which most people would never bother to go to so much trouble over. They ...

Perfect, simple self-reproduction is a target core competency for LiveCDs such as Puppy... Could future versions please include cdrdao? Then maybe burniso2cd and graveman could use it?

Lobster, Thanks for the Exploring Reports from the Frontiers! Since Puppy only takes up one-tenth of a CD, I'd love a CD containing many multi-boot light-weight live distros. (Could also include multiple versions of Puppy.) The instructions for how to do this are here, in English and Spanish: http:/...

Cdrecord TAO burn glitch - two extra sectors

Puppy seems not capable of burning a perfect CD from ISO! Burniso2cd and Graveman use cdrecord to burn in TAO mode. In this mode, two extra phantom null run-out sectors of padding are added at the end. These do not seem to affect most normal uses. But they make readcd think the CD is two sectors lon...

The Newegg $100 800MHz VIA C3 sure sounds tempting -- is the USB 2.0? The Livedeal $500 computer is presumably for people not comfortable messing with hardware. I'd say the balance of what is included could be tuned up. I think more than 256MB should come standard -- ramdisk is wonderful! Try for a ...

108r1 Graveman read bug

There seems to be something wrong with Graveman in 108r1. When reading from a CD to make an iso file it is prone to peculiar failures when trying to start: > Cannot create image: /usr/bin/readcd: Bad flag: speed=. The general pattern seems to be that it might work on the first try, and then fail on ...

How to make iso file from CD with readcd

There are many ways to make an iso file from a CD, using dd or even just cat. Sometimes these work. Sometimes they do not. Graveman can be used to do this, but sometimes it fails with peculiar, frustrating errors. The best way I have found so far is from the command line: # readcd -v dev=ATAPI:/dev/...

qwerty default

The 1.0.8r1 boot process is still defaulting to azerty. If you go with this default, you get weird azerty keyboard mapping within the desktop, but standard qwerty back at the bare command line.

Please change future boot scripts to fully default to some nominal standard qwerty keyboard mapping.

The 1.0.8r1 bootup script now does indeed bark to test that the ALSA sound is working. But it is just one very brief bark, easily missed, or confused with other random noises. Please consider upgrading future test sound files to something like woof-woof, some distintive sound lasting upwards of a fu...

I think it is entirely appropriate for Standard Puppy to keep growing larger, as long as efficient effective use is made of the growing size. The 60MB goal might as well slowly rise to about 100MB over time. (I read recently about a special project in Japan that speeds up the launch of Knoppix by ab...

Has anyone tried XCPUID in Puppy? Can you tell us how to do it? I'd love to have something to show the actual CPU clock, multiplier, the RAM clock, and all the memory timings. It seems like H.Oda!'s WCPUID is very popular, but requires Windows. But he also offers XCPUID for linux: http://www.h-oda.c...
