Frugal with Vista - how to do it?
The beautiful page on how to do a frugal install talks about XP, and I used it when I had XP, with no problems. Now I have Vista. Does it apply, without change, to Vista? If not, what has to be done to install with Vista? I would use EasyBCD to do a dual boot. I have done umpteen searches on the For...

Works with Netcomm NP544
I have discovered that the Netcomm NP544 USB dongle has Ralink chipset RT2501USB. This can be found at www.atlantis-land.com (which is in Italian, but the specs are in English). The specs also show as: RT2501USB (RT2508+RT2571W) I got wireless to work with Pup4.11. However, I had to by-pass Ndiswrap...

Pup4.1 and wlan details not saved
Puppy 4.1 frugal install on my widoze vista PC works really well, and all changes, except connection details (ndiswrapper) are saved for next bootup. So I have to re-set the connection each time after booting up. Is there something I'm missing? I can post more details, if someone can tell me what de...

Dual boot & frugal
Thanks for the suggestion, icpug.
I'll try with the live CD.
If it saves, I'll move the pupsave to where puppy4.00 is - actually, it's on the Win H/drive root, i.e C: ,in windows talk. The puppy files are on the bare root, not in a folder on the root.
I''l post the resutlt.
Thanks again

Dual Boot Vista/Puppy frugal install: Pup not saving session
Both Vista and Puppy4.00 boot OK with EasyBCD. Puppy 4.00 is a frugal install on C: However, Puppy doesn't save the session on shutdown. The Grub text is as follows: kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 PMEDIA=idehd initrd (hd0,0)/initrd.gz boot What must I do to get Puppy to save the session on ex...

Moribund laptop
Hi muggins - and everyone who has made suggestions. Ye olde laptop is a CompactPresario 1692. I did have Puppy on it, via a dying CD drive, but then I trashed Grub (don't know how), and then the laptop became pretty useless. Now I'm trying to revive it, without a CD or floppy drive, and no hardware/...

reviving moribund laptop
Hi Sage You may recall that some time back I asked a similar question, and you suggested I remove the laptop CD drive and replace it with a new (or 2nd hand, I suppose) one. I tried , but I couldn't get the darn back of the L/top open. I think I'd have the same problem with the H/drive. I will try a...

Dead (almost) laptop.
Iwill: Thanks for your post. Did you mean that you removed the h/drive from your desktop, then connected the laptop to the desktop with the IDE adaptor? I'm reluctant to remove the hard drive from my desktop - you know, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", or in this case, "don't mess w...

Reviving moribund laptop - how?
 I have an old laptop (Compaq Presario 1630) of which the CD drive and floppy drive are kaput, and which doesn't have an option to boot from USB. Moreover, the MBR is broken, and trying to boot from the H/disk (which once had Puppy on it) shows a broken Grub that won't go beyond the first stage...

Sorry - I solved it by fiddling around. First I set up alsa mixer with maximum settings. Then I used Puppy sound mixer likewise. GXine seems to be OK now.

I'm running puppyOS RC5,. I can't get sound at all. When I run GXine it cuts out of X and into the non-gui screen, where I have to type xwin to get back to the gui desktop. I've searched puppy for info, but it seems to be very technical and not related to the problem. My sound card is a REALTEK HIGH...

Thanks everyone - you've been very helpful. wake2pup
Can wake2pup be installed on a CD? My new VISTA machine doesn't have a floppy.
It seems they don't make them with floppies these days, which is a pity - I have loads of stuff on floppies - old docs from way back that I'd like to access. I suppose I'll have to buy a floppy drive.
